Pay-per-view channels.
More channels behind paywalls.

NLM should consider introducing pay-per-view channels featuring explicit content, targeted at viewers who are both curious and financially able to afford them. These channels could be offered through the new Grid platform, where users purchase access rights linked directly to their SIC ID's. Once privileges are acquired, the paid channels would automatically be accessible across any television or compatible device that recognizes the associated user SIC ID.
ICly, the goal with shows and stuff is to make money, yes. But OOC, the goal is more to just try to get as may players watching and enjoying as possible. Making shows more inaccessible would just lead to less people seeing them, which I think anyone making that content is strongly against.
That sounds more like an marketing issue than anything else. But I do get your point of view on the matter. When there's burning curiosity, few hundred chyens means nothing to be informed about happenings, especially when it comes to possible hot topics.
The shows that are now for free, easily accessible and pushed hard icly struggle to be viewed far and wide. So I am not a fan of gatekeeping it further, I really struggle with what would this add to the game in practical terms.
Maybe instead there could be different television style items where one is cheaper and only gets re-runs and one is more expensive and can get new stuff?

Bars topside would all run the new hotness, and drive more people to Gold to watch more live feed stuff.

This would increase the class divide and drive more people into high-end bars where Mixers might run into more corpies and then hopefully chaos ensues.

I don't think we should be limiting a medium that already doesn't get enough eyes on it.
I agree with the folks who are against this.

Perhaps I'm naive, but I cannot imagine any other type of player-made IC content that would take as much OOC time to create as the content that broadcasts on the IC television system.

Whether it's IC paywalls or sector-based divides in broadcast availability, putting that content behind barriers doesn't make sense to me. I worry that, in the long run, it would result in fewer people interacting with the player-made content which, in turn, would result in fewer players being interested in spending the time to create content for that system in the future.

All that being said, there's some great ideas in this thread still but I would shift them from focusing on hiding content from those who can't afford it to making content more accessible for those who can afford it. For instance, instead of limiting the availability of television in the Mix or locking specific types of content behind a pay-per-view basis, keep television how it currently is but introduce a high-end television item that supports a streaming functionality where programs can be played on-demand.

I also support the creation or more explicit content but think it should be accessible to all by default instead of kept in a walled garden.

I would quite like a streaming tv, technologically it may not make sense for the rest of the universe but… Since when does it have to? Let me watch Mixed UP on repeat.
I think I wouldn't mind this so much if we had an on demand viewing system! It's something I've always wished we could have because it really can be hard to catch shows you really want to watch at the right times. I think I'm with the others though that as the system is, a pay per view type deal may be too much of a blocker to roleplay rather than creating more opportunities for it.

I like the recent additions though to [redacted, supersecret shh]. I think there is definitely room for some more TV nonsense. Monetization for shenanigans may need to be more ambient or something. Ad revenue? I'm not sure.

An on-demand system would be so cool! Or a system where you could DVR it onto a memory module or something. Now I'm also imagining being able to DVR/NVR camera feeds…
