Grid 4.0 FAQ
Collection of FAQ for Grid 4

I THINK I FOUND A BUG WHAT DO I DO?

Please use @bug and give us much detail about what the bug is, how to replicate it, etc. We'll see that it gets fixed ASAP.

DO I NEED TO MAKE A NEW GRID ACCOUNT

No, your existing accounts work fine. Grid 3 (Web) and Grid 4 (MOO) can both be used.

WHY DID NODES GO AWAY ON GRID 3 (WEB)?

Because those nodes were using markup and html for formatting and the MOO doesn't support them. Nodes created in Grid 3 look like crap for the most part on the MOO. Nodes will only be available on Grid 4 moving forward.

CAN I TRANSFER MY NODE FROM GRID 3 TO GRID 4?

You don't need to transfer it. It is there already. You probably need to edit it and use the new tags (see the NodeEditing node) to make it look nice on the MOO. I've taken steps to make Grid 3 nodes at least readable on the MOO, but some still don't look great.

DO I NEED A NEW QUICKTERM / LITETERM?

Nope. Your existing terms work for both Grid 3 and Grid 4. However, there is a new term, the NovaTerm, which is better than both a QT an LT. The terms get progressively better in what they can do from a Decker perspective. And QTs are the only ones that currently need SIC signal to function. All other terms are always connected to the grid. If you're just a casual grid user, a QT should suit your needs.

CAN I RESPEC EARLY SO I CAN DO DECKER THINGS?

No, these skills have existed and had uses in Grid 3 for a decade. None of these skills are retconned. They just have more utility now. If you still have a respec available, you can request it, but your character cannot dramatically change (see help respec). Meaning if you are a combat beast you can't respec into decker beast. You could just drop a few unused skills and pick up a few decking skills.

WHY CANT WE TRANSFER PROGRAMS, GEOCODED LOCATIONS, DEVICES

Programs: For balance. If any program can be transferred, it means that deckers are less likely to be involved in the action. They'll just become program sweatshops that churn programs out for other people to use. That doesn't sound fun. We want deckers to be in the middle of the action.

Locations/Devices: Also for balance. Making every term that is going to run programs against a device/location have to scan that device or location means that Deckers, or people they hire, are out in the world getting what they need to make the progs they wanna make. It adds risk, increases RP opportunities, and makes it so a Decker can't just sit behind a locked door and endlessly target enemies without ever taking a physical risk.

WHY ISN'T THERE AN APP STORE FOR PROGRAMS

Makes total sense why people would want this. I had initially intended to create one. But it runs counter to creating RP. Engaging directly with a decker, or a decker engaging with customers, is roleplay. A decker creating progs and uploading them to an app store and waiting for them to sell is more like a resource management game. We aren't doing an App Store.

I AM NOT A PROGRAMMER, CAN I STILL BE A DECKER?

Definitely. You're going to have to learn a liiiiitle bit about programming though. There are IC resources to teach you, and IC characters (PC and NPC) that will be able to walk you through program creation. The scripting language we created for programs is intended to be easy to learn. In fact, node editing uses the same syntax, and is intended to be an entry point into getting familiar with the scripting needed to make a program. So yeah, no experience needed, but there will be a slightly steeper learning curve. Just make sure you're open to that :)

WHY WOULD SOME OF THE COMMANDS THAT EXIST IN BRLANG BE AVAILABLE ICLY?

There are some commands that do decker things which probably wouldn't exist in the real world. Like the internet doesn't have a 'crack website' command. Don't scratch the walls about this. It's a game. We want cool shit happening, and it needs to be easy enough to understand that people can pick it up quickly. If you need an IC reason, it's because large parts of the grid were written by unchained AIs that don't like the Megacorps and wanted backdoors into the systems.

HOW IS GRID HEAT GENERATED FROM A COMMAND IMPACTED BY CRACKING

Cracking can reduce the grid heat generated by a program. It is a % reduction based on the characters cracking skill. This is represented ICly by those will increasingly good cracking skill having a deeper knowledge of the grid and how to get away with things. This is passive and happens automatically, but can be roleplayed by deckers as they see fit.

IF I RUN A PROGRAM CREATED BY SOMEONE ELSE, WHO'S SKILLS DOES IT ROLL?

It uses the programmer that made the programs skill. The skill rolls a program uses are baked into the program when it is created, and then referenced any time the program is run.

SO A NON DECKER CAN RUN A PROGRAM AND IT WILL BE SUCCESSFUL?

Yes, though they would need to have the term the program was developed on. This means deckers can sell their programs by selling the term they developed it on, and it also means they can have assistants / protege's and such that run programs on their behalf.

HOW DO I TALK ABOUT PROGRAM OR NODE SOURCE CODE ICLY

You can talk about them generally, but don't spout off the program code for a node or program using say or to or on the SIC. Gridmail it, pass it on an enote, etc.

CAN I VIEW THE SOURCE CODE OF MY PROGRAM AFTER COMPILING IT?

Nope. There is not currently a way to do that. That way if your deck gets stolen, they might get your progs, but they don't get your l337 source code.

WHAT HAPPENS TO A PROGRAM AFTER ITS LAST USE

It is automatically removed from the term.

TALKING ABOUT NODES & PROGRAMS ICLY & COMMANDS

The topic of nodes and programs will obviously come up ICly. You can talk about them generally, and if you become an expert, train others in how node creation and program creation using Brlang work. However, the actual code for nodes and programs is COMPLEX ICly. You can't just speak the source code of a program. If you need to give someone examples of how NodeEditing or Brlang works, you can gridmail examples, post them on a node, or post them on a forum.

Do not say them outloud or SIC them or say them over the phone or radio, etc. It would be immersion breaking. Instead of pasting source code, you could do something like: "You need to use the device execute command, and pass in an argument which is the grid id you get from viewing the devices you've scanned on your term. Then another argument in the command you want to execute."

If you need to tell someone to try typing the command: "g nodes view Welcome" please don't paste the command to them. ICly your characters are NOT typing 'g' into their term. They are using the touchscreen. Instead, reference it like this: "from the nodes tab, enter 'view Welcome'", or something along those lines. If someone is having a lot of trouble, you can use local OOC to tell them the specific command to type.
