WAI XM-8 Needle Gun
The WAI XM-8 Needle Gun is a essentially a handgun-sized gauss weapon, that is to say a type of projectile accelerator that consists of a number of coils used as electromagnets in the configuration of a synchronous linear motor which accelerate a magnetic projectile to high velocity. In the case of the XM-8 Needle Gun, the 'projectile' is a volley of small flechettes, commonly referred to as "needles". Due to the availability of non-lethal ammunition for the weapon, the XM-8 is the weapon of choice for WJF medical examiners and some security contractors.
Two types of ammunition are manufactured for the XM-8: standard needle cartridges and black-tipped needle cartridges. The standard needles rely on their velocity to shred skin and muscle, while the black-tipped needles penetrate the body and dissolve into a fast-acting tranquilizer.
