Disappointing experience with xgame help

I understand, and appreciate, the immersive nature of the game, and the idea that the majority of your character's information must be 'FOIC', but I've noticed an odd trend that I find a bit disappointing. Some questions asked over xgame help, mine & others, are sometimes blocked from being answered with information neither detracts from the experience, or robs the character of agency.

In my own case, attempting to deliver a package to 'Kro's Spare Parts' in the junkyard, when the description for the location doesn't provide anywhere near enough information to locate the proper building. I requested help over xgame, and someone was very keen to help explain what I needed to do - but were blocked by multiple people from doing-so in a very odd 'peer pressure' sort of way. Helping me to find the proper location wouldn't have given the character any information they couldn't already be able to see with their own two eyes, and it might have even saved me, the writer, from a foolish mistake due to unclear descriptions.

Finding out in-character works for most things, but we have an entire 'help' system in-place, I assume, for a reason. Players attempting to support players should not be peer-pressured or told not to help someone in-need - it makes the game more accessible in the long run, as when a player is truly stumped, they can reach out and maybe get the one hint they needed to progress - instead of being stuck at square one.

Say what you will; 'that's the way the rules are set', sure, but this is also a community. Communities support one-another. I would like to see a bit more support than 'fend for yourself, newblood/git gud".

Sometimes it can be frustrating. There's some locations that I feel should be highlighted better in the room descriptions, especially locations that are regularly frequented by new characters.

Something I love about SD is that players hold each other accountable in sticking to the theme and encouraging players to seek out info in-game. It doesn't feel like peer pressure to me but rather, players supporting one another and gently reminding one another to stay within the rules. I know the feeling of being over-eager to help someone and needing a reminder to not give away too much! It can definitely be frustrating to newer folks to figure out what channels are best for asking various things. XGame is good for helping with commands, things like "I can't figure out how to change my door combo and the help file is confusing" or "What's the command for hiding something?"

For things such as IC locations, you can ask IC using SIC and people will generally know what you're talking about. Characters would respond saying things like "Oh, you might find what you're looking for if you -go- to the -direction name-" and use emphasis to highlight what keywords you need to type.

A tip for asking on xgame is don't reveal where your character is currently located, don't say any specific location names. Keep it as vague as possible. There's also characters in-game whose IC jobs are to support new players, who are really great sources of information.

It might have seemed like players were being unhelpful or obstinate in preventing you from getting specific directions over XGAME, but they were actually looking after your best interests and the best experiences for everyone.

First, because your character cannot know something they did not learn (like a location), even if you the player knows this from being told through OOC channels, doing so is what is called metagaming and is generally disallowed or discouraged. For a new player playing a new character, this distinction is extremely fine and may seem immaterial but being told to seek that type of information with your character themselves so that that character can fairly be said to know it is really teaching best practices.

Second, while this divide of IC character knowledge versus OOC player knowledge may seem difficult or obtuse for new players, it is actually protecting them to a far greater degree than it is inconveniencing them. The distinction between what a new player and their new character knows is sometimes zero, whereas the distinction between what a veteran player knows compared to what their fresh character knows can be enormous, and gameplay warping.

In principle, I cannot or should not as a very experienced player simply begin a new character and use my substantial game world knowledge to immediately leap ahead in what I am doing compared to any other new character, I should be going through the same learning processes to find where everything is and other things. Now in practice experienced players on new characters will inevitably have significant advantages but the basic idea is for players to learn to maintain a divide between what they know as players and what they can do as their characters, so those characters are played more authentically and fairly.

However I will add that often new players run into the issue where they are really seeking OOC information, but are phrasing it in IC terms for lack of experience in making the distinction.

So for example, players very often have trouble going to the junkyard shack and they will ask how to get there... but they don't mean 'where is this place in the context of Red Sector' which is something their character may already know, they're really asking as players 'how do I use this non-cardinal exit'.

It's not always the case, there are some areas or game mechanics that will pretty much never be taught over XGAME no matter how OOC-exclusive they are, but generally speaking framing a question in terms of what your difficulties as a player are, rather than what your character needs to know, can get something more helpful than a 'find out in character' back.
