The Working Cap
Yes, this again.

I have read a few old posts but wanted a fresh one as this is my current frustration and the game dynamic has changed since the last time this was discussed.

The current cap can be reached in a day or two. Which is fine. My issue is the whole seeking extra funds through RP with little to no aid, which then requires you to become an annoying player who's always asking if anyone needs a runner or offering themselves up to be mocked for being overeager. Maybe it worked differently when there was a larger community, but as it stands I'm not sure.

I'd love to know what others have done or what direction to look because as it is, I'm starting to just go to work, log off and wait. Which I hate.

I think it just takes a readjustment of your goals. Sindome isn't reallg meant to be a stuff collector, but rather to generate story. The cap is set in place so you don't just minmax and farm. It also helps chy mean something. Its a different game philosophy than some other games. Very little PvE here - and "the grind" is more of a time investment and building connections thing.

You can build characters to generate chy. Some archetypes are very well suited to that. There are others where the chy is basically nonexistent or even a chyen sink. All of them can be "successful" in terms of story based on your connections.

The game is PvE. If you're not taking from other players, you're getting taken from.
I'd still like to be able to keep up though with things. Repair or replace lost or broken things. I get its the mix and feeling defeated is natural, but as the player feeling defeated seems kind of not motivating.
No such thing as being too “overeager”. Players actually really respect people with good hustle who put themselves out there and are open to runner jobs. It’s how you make connections with more established players and show that you’re down for exciting biz.
Are there opportunities? So far I've seen runners used for food and beverages but does it actually lead to more?
There are. They will be risky. You'll catch them from the big fish players but you'll likely have to prove yourself first. Some will be harder to convince than others. You'll risk getting your ass handed to you by their enemy too, likely. :P There are some very good players offering rp hooks all the time, even to new characters. There's great characters in just about every niche in the game that will mentor you (or at least show you how they can weaponize you).
Running jobs are not really an important thing in the way players and in-game guides sometimes suggest they are, they exist but they're really kind of a relic of the game from several years ago when perhaps half or more of the game's economy revolved around getting runners every for delivering high-value items for big payouts.

When the game says seek more income through roleplaying, it's essentially talking about any possible interaction you might have with another player character that ends in being paid, whether that is through creating things, stealing things, writing things, killing characters, getting data for characters, working for player businesses, trading or selling items to players, or whatever else.

Some players will never really have much player income separate from what they earn towards the cap, others can make cash hand over fist in roles that allow for a lot of player engagement, there's not really anything that players are supposed to be doing, it's kind freeform and up to everyone to decide for themselves but if you're hitting the cap every week with time to spare you'll be making decent money that is above average overall.

That's just it. I'm not. Between tolls, rent and lev fees while being dipped, there is nothing left.
Imagine the below average!
But to add to that so you're not discouraged: A lot of development in the game involves improving efficiencies rather than just making more money, learning how to avoid costs like travel fare and taxes and getting extorted or pickpocketed, learning how to minimize rent costs and get better value out of the things you do pay for.

It's pretty normal to be saving nothing as a new player playing a new character, over time you'll figure out some things don't have to be expenses and other things are avoided as your skills and stats improve so that the same amount of income ends up going a lot further (except do not treat updates as an expense to be minimized).

My two cents...

One, you can reduce expenses. Roommates, cheaper place, making gangers earn those 'tolls' and learning to better combat dips. I'm not saying to just go all out and do all of them half cocked but they can all be worked towards.

Also, running reliably can create interest from other PCs. They see you stick about and deliver, even on simple things, and they will be more likely to bring you in on other things. Sindome is a long haul game. For good or ill, many players also seem to feel that there is some kind of due paying involved like being a bartender before you can be a corpie. I don't agree with 90% of it but you kind of have to work with what's available.

Best of all, you can start getting creative with things. You don't have to wait for work. You can start creating it. Random and largely lame examples can include:

- Maybe make messes you can be paid to clean (or get someone to make those messes).

- Convince a character they are hungry after a big workout so they want food and you can offer to run it.

- Hire a tailor to make a catchy t-shirt then create a desire for it with witty SIC banter.

- Convince someone that they are being hunted then offer bodyguard services.

- Agree to heal someone for free if they go and beat up others so you can just happen to be available to heal them.

- Lie about a great deal on Gold (or get someone to do it) so you can offer fast taxi service.

Sindome is best played proactively. It's not easy and can be draining but the best players don't wait for someone to pull them in. They CREATE opportunities. And it usually comes in waves but once you build a reputation for making things happen others want to engage with you more.

Just a few random thoughts! Hope one or two helps!

I think I must be playin the game very wrong since I don't have any of the skills to do any of those hilariously awesome examples. I haven't actively seen anyone doing much aside from their day jobs so I think I'll just wait and see. I have a very example-oriented brain; I can be creative, but I need guidelines and to watch and learn.

Thankfully I am loving the game as is, I'm just struggling a little to make ends meet.

You're not playing wrong at all (probably). It can take months just to learn all the command syntax and how mechanics of the game function, and it can take sometimes years for players to get really comfortable with advanced roleplaying of the sort that can make serious money. A lot of it can come down to who you're meeting and who you are learning from.

But I'd say you're well ahead of the curve after only a few weeks of playing and if your character is making ~10,000c a week you're doing more than fine for a new player, it's normal for money to be getting eaten up by expenses in the first month or first few months, you will find you're gradually making out with more savings each week as your character develops experience and as you settle into the world and begin to figure out how things work.
