Musical Instruments
Lets make some music

Musical Instruments are legit in-game objects, but they're not broadly available yet. Lets design some instruments. Use the below example and make each post a single instrument (please do not half finish one)

Here is our SpeedDemon 5000 guitar:

*Basic Attributes*

Name: SpeedDemon 5000 guitar

Item Type: guitar (recognizable general type)

Height: 96 (centimeters, length of longest edge)

Weight: 7500 (grams)

Value: 8400c

*Clothing Attributes*

@coverage guitar is 'back' (musical instruments work like clothing)

@wear guitar is "You slip the strap of your %t over your neck and hang it on your shoulder."

@owear guitar is "%N slips the strap of %p %t over %p neck, and hangs it on %p shoulder."

@remove guitar is "You remove the strap of your %t from your shoulder and hold the guitar by its neck."

@oremove guitar is "%N removes the strap of %p %t from %p shoulder and holds the guitar by its neck."

@worn guitar is "A heavily modded %t is worn across %p back with a black strap."

@tease guitar is "You finger some chords on your %t and move as playing the strings but without touching them or producing any sound."

@otease guitar is "%N %[fingers] some chords on %p %t and % as playing the strings but without touching them or producing any sound."

@describe guitar as "A gloss black SpeedDemon 2000 guitar that has obviously been heavily modified. One of the most noticeable features is the fact that there are no visible pickups; the custom optical pickups are hidden behind a custom black glass inset where the old pickups used to be. It has an Optik-Sound uplink with a large length of fiber sticking out of it. The 6 self-tuning strings run the length of the long neck that terminates in a large bloody spike. Four perfectly black dials blend flawlessly with the body of the guitar."

*Music Attributes*

@slowdown_action guitar is "%N %[reduces] the tempo, playing %p %t a little slower."

@speedup_action guitar is "%N %[picks] up the tempo, playing %p %t a little faster."

"musical instruments work like clothing"[/b}

For a guitar I can see why this makes sense.

But do they have to work like clothing, do they have to be worn?

Trumpet, drum-kit, grand piano... Certain instruments, maybe even most instruments, don't make sense to me personally as a "wearable" thing. Some instruments aren't even held in the hands - I imagine them more like interactive objects in a room (you know, those things with cyan text which you can run commands on but can't pick up and move). Or like seats in a room - besides the interactive part which lets you play it as an instrument, you might even sit on it too (a seat in the room).

And even instruments which maybe you do carry/hold while playing them... Wearing them still grates on me. Who has two hands free while they're rocking their trumpet?

Anyway I don't mean this as a lot of criticism, "Your Instruments Are Broken" - I don't mean it that way. I'm asking what kind of versatility and "other ideas" would be helpful/usefulwelcome, if players have ideas which suit a different model other than strapping the thing on and wearing it.

Another thing I'll say on the subject of instruments, particularly for the sake of any players who might not have seen or used any yet:

What they do, besides just being a prop you can hold/wear/tease/whatever, is, they let the character playing them do a special kind of spoof into the room where they're playing. It works a little bit like being on a stage in a room with a stage - you can use a special command to describe the performance in a way which lets you get a little bit beyond plain old emotes and poses, which begin with your character's name, or spoof, which doesn't start with their name but still MUST contain it.

With a stage, you can emit an emote which starts with "on the stage..." instead of starting with "Yourcharacter..."

And with an instrument you can emit a spoof which necessarily contains "guitar" instead of necessarily containing "Yourcharacter".

Personally, I find that playing an instrument always had my character's name in it anyway, so, other than experimentation, I actually never found myself using the special "play" verb which an instrument object provides.

But I'm sure that, if you've never used one, you can see how the "play" verb on an instrument object can expand your options when you write performance text. It's just another color on your roleplaying palette which already has pose, emote and spoof on it, besides say and to.

I agree with Vetra and i think there's some added realism to making items that need be setup in a room and possibly carried by a roadie with +1 strength like drum kits and a piano, however, in the short term we should focus on empowering music oriented PC's rather then complicating things.

What I would love to see is musical instruments that very CP...stuff that's mostly digital that doesn't exist today and can be carried around. Think about stuff ala Virtuosity's "Sid Symphony" - let's make music that doesn't exist yet...and isn't dubstep.

I honestly have some issues with my own description, but here's something; being that I'm not sure how much you can do with a non-conventional instrument (it isn't really a guitar, just a stringed instrument), it might not be useful. (I also realize it's expensive, but shiny new orchestra instruments aren't cheap.)

*BASIC ATTRIBUTES*

Name: SynthNote digital violin

Item Type: guitar (if that's just the general type)

Height: 60 (if that's changeable)

Weight: 500 (if that's changeable)

Value: 24000c

*CLOTHING ATTRIBUTES*

@coverage violin is 'groin'

@see-thru violin (is that possible, or is it automatically that way?)

@wear violin is "You press a discrete button on the side of your %t, the laser strings fading away. In a quick movement, you hang the fingerboard at your waist, hooking it to your waistband."

@owear is "%N's fingers press against the side of %p %t, the laser strings fading away. In a quick movement, %p hangs the remaining fingerboard at %p waist."

@remove violin is "You slip the fingerboard of your %t from your waistband, thumb pressing against a discrete button to bring the instrument to life."

@oremove is "%N slips the fingerboard of %p %t from %p waistband, thumb pressing against the side of it. A collection of laser strings hum to life, curling over the scroll."

@worn violin is "A digital fingerboard hangs at %p hip, sporting the SynthNote logo."

@tease violin is "Your fingers press silent songs against the digital fingerboard of your %t."

@otease violin is "%N's fingers press silent songs against the digital fingerboard of %p %t."

@describe is "This violin is meant to be compact, not even looking like a violin when turned off. The digital fingerboard is a glossy black, branded in white with the treble clef SynthNote logo; a discrete button on the left side of the fingerboard turns the instrument on for use. Four self-tuning laser strings stretch across the neck and decorative scroll, luminescent in shifting colors to make the neoplastic construct a dazzling show in and of itself, running into the stand-alone chinrest used to position it properly against the shoulder. The bow is a foot of sleek black neoplastic, 'strung' with a single translucent beam; when drawn across the strings, the violin produces a soothing metallic hum, high-pitched and harkening back to the original inspiration."

*MUSIC ATTRIBUTES*

@slowdown_action violin is "%N %[reduces] %p tempo, drawing the bow across %p %t a bit slower."

@speedup_action violin is "%N %[picks] up %p tempo, drawing the bow across %p %t a bit quicker."

Name: Mixmash E-305 guitar

Item Type: guitar

Height: 132 cm

Weight: 6250g

Value: 5000c (variable, I don’t have a head for economics here)

*Clothing Attributes*

@coverage guitar is ‘back’

@wear guitar is "You slip the strap of your %t over your neck and hang it on your shoulder.”

@worn guitar is "A grungy, dented %t is slung over %p back, its scratched %color chromatic finish glinting dully in the light."

@tease guitar is "You bring the headstock of your guitar up in front of your mouth and wiggle your tongue, as if eating out the space between the old-fashioned tuning pegs."

@otease guitar is "%N brings the headstock of %p guitar up in front of %p mouth and wiggles %p tongue, as if eating out the space between the old-fashioned tuning pegs."

@describe guitar as "Strung together from makeshift parts, a %t has certainly earned its brand name. Various synth-mats have been blended together into some pseduo-sound-plastic to form the body, while the strings are held in place at the headstock by machine-head screws. The %color chromatic paint must have once been bright, but now its overburdened by scratches and dents, a dull vestige of what once was. "

@slowdown_action guitar is "%N %[reduces] the tempo, playing %p %t a little slower."

@speedup_action guitar is "%N %[picks] up the tempo, playing %p %t a little faster."

Item Type: drums

Height: 68 cm

@remove drums is "You unlatch the makeshift harness and slip out of a %t."

@oremove drums is "%N unlatches the makeshift harness and slips out of a %t."

@worn drums is "Secured over the front of %p torso by a mess of ropes and hooks that form a tangled harness, a %t lines %p body, providing access to a conglomeration of differently sized pots, cans, and things to beat on."

@tease drums is "You rattle off a quick, classic ‘badum-TISH' on your %t."

@otease drums is "%N rattles off a quick, classic ‘badum-TISH' on %p %t."

@describe drums as "Arrayed in a classic ‘marching-band' type feel, a %t has been thrown together with nothing more then some creative genius, a few dented cans, and some rope. The %color paint on it adds some flair, at least."

*Music Attributes*

@slowdown_action drums is "%N %[reduces] the tempo, playing %p %t a little slower."

Item Type: harmonica

Height: 11 cm

Weight: 700g

Value: 4500c

*Clothing Attributes*

@coverage harmonica is .... well shit. Hand? Head? Not sure on this one.

Going to hold off on clothing attributes for now, as I’m not sure how one would wear a harmonica.

@describe harmonica as "Glossed up in a chromatic %color, this %t is a little rusty around the metal bits, but still functional. Inside of it, the reeds are made from some cheap pseudowood, mixed with synthfiber. Emblazoned on the top are the words ‘South-Synth'."

@speedup_action harmonica is "%N %[picks] up the tempo, playing %p %t a little faster."

Some characters have created "custom created clothing" in the form of instruments.

( http://www.sindome.org/bgbb/game-discussion/new-game-features/tailoring-materials--names-n-layers-174/ )

I know there have been people who have looked for instruments in game.

Is the 'custom created' instrument from cloth still allowed (OP) and would something like this need to be @noted and we work with GM's on approval?

I'm curious to how this would work. (Doesn't make sense to have someone with par artistry make a high end violin, but then there're things like taking a plastic box, wire, pbc and making your own acoustic guitar.) thx

somehow i missed that a violin had been done, already and i like that one better than the one i did. Maybe this could be a cheapo version for mixers or something. I think its funny we both had coloured strings in the descs.

A synthesized violin

*Basic Attributes*

Name: Stratosphone Syntholin

Item Type: violin

Height: 60

Weight: 500

Value: *****c

*Clothing Attributes*

@coverage syntholin is 'back'

@wear syntholin is You slip the strap of your %t over your neck and sling it over your shoulder.

@owear syntholin is %N slips the strap of %p %t over %p neck, and slings it over %p shoulder.

@remove syntholin is You remove the strap of your %t from your shoulder and hold the violin by its neck.

@oremove syntholin is %N removes the strap of %p %t from %p shoulder and holds the violin by its neck.

@worn syntholin is A sleek %t hangs across %p back

@tease syntholin is You draw your finger down the neck of your %t, then carefully buff out a smear on its highly polished surface.

@otease syntholin is %N draws %p finger down the neck of %p %t, then carefully buffs out a smear on its highly polished surface.

@describe syntholin as A sleek and highly polished Stratosphone Syntholin. Made of a kevlar and carbon fiber, then polished to a sheen like black ice, this synthesized violin retains some of its classical signature sexy curves at the chin rest while the outer edges are cut sharply down the middle of the violin in a violent juxtaposition. The neck ends in a knife-like point, lined with four multi-colored self-tuning fiber-optic strings that pulse a rainbow of color when played. Just below the bridge are four distortion pads used to create a variety of different sounds.

*Music Attributes*

@slowdown_action syntholin is %N %[reduces] the tempo, drawing the bow slowly across the strings of %p %t.

@speedup_action syntholin is %N %[picks] up the tempo, snapping the bow quickly across %p %t.

Name: StarTech T1000 Turntable

Item Type: Digital Instrument

Height: 43

Weight: 11000

Value: 30000c

@coverage turntables is ‘chest’

@describe turntables as “A sleek set of digital turntables installed side by side with a mixer situated between them. The entire musical device seems to be made from a light weight teal metallic material. The mixer has multiple buttons, knobs, and sliders for adjusting different sounds and settings on the device. On the side you can see some input jacks, probably for plugging in external speakers or interfacing with other devices.”

@wear turntables is "You get out your %t, flip open the cover, connect some cables and hit the power button which glows a soft %color. You adjust some knobs and you hear a series of sounds and beeping as the machine comes alive."

@owear turntables is "%N gets out %p %t, flips the cover open, takes out some cables and plugs them in before %s hits the power button. %S adjust some knobs and you hear a series of sounds and beeping as the machine comes alive and glows a %color color."

@remove turntables is "You power down the %t and close the cover, making sure to tuck the cables neatly inside the case."

@oremove turntables is "%N powers down the %t and close the cover, making sure to tuck the cables neatly in the case."

@worn turntables is "%N is working %p musical magic as %s expertly controls the set of turntables. The %color lights casting its luminescence upon %p eyes."

@blood_description turntables is "crusty red stuff"

@tease turntables is "You hit a few buttons on the mixers control surface. The platters of each turntable begin to spin. You select a track and press play. Music begins to fill %l."

@dtease turntables is "%N % %D with %p %t."

@otease turntables is "%N hits a few buttons on the mixers control surface. The platters of each turntable begin to spin. %S selects a track and presses play. Music begins to fill %l."

@slowdown_action turntables is “%N rocks and sways with the beat for a few moments before clapping %p hands together and bringing the tempo down by manipulating the %t.

@speedup_action turntables is “%N nods a few times and points at the crowd. %S smiles and raises a fist as %s brings both hands to the deck and cranks up the tempo and bass to full, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

thecraftydragon asked:

Is the 'custom created' instrument from cloth still allowed?

No, making musical instruments out of tailor materials isn't allowed. It's not like it ever was, it's more like people just went and did it and we admins didn't stop them until it was too late.

"Help tailor-play" makes this clear.
