The height/weight dilemma
A discussion.

I've noticed there's lately been an uptick of IC discussion regarding characters with height/weight ratios that aren't very realistic, at least in the real world. I wanted to hear the playerbase (and staff's) opinion on this, even though I know it's been visited/discussed plenty of times, with suggestions such as adjusting the parameters. I also know there are IC and even OOC means to fix them if the player wishes to do so.

But in cases where the player behind the character does not, what is the best approach to viewing this ICly? Are they considered genetic diseases, is it the norm in the 2100s to be tiny/huge (thanks to biomodifications)?

I understand for some the numbers that chargen pops out can be quite immersion breaking due to how impossible they are with human physiology, but do we excuse this as just advanced technology/the future, or would these individuals still be considered an anomaly?

Many characters will have some sort of IC reason for their abnormal height or weight, even if it's not a very detailed one. Also, I think it's totally reasonable that unusual heights or weights are more usual because of biomodification. Though a lot of times, they aren't actually as unrealistic as you might think if you look at IRL average values.
This seems to be the result of whoever implemented this not being familiar with the metric system and normal height/weight ranges. I can wrap my head around people being unusually short, but not having a BMI that's incompatible with long-term survival, while being perfectly healthy.
In regards to the values not being as unrealistic as you might think - without giving specific examples, I know some characters who if you traced them on an actual human development chart would have to be four years old to be considered healthy (and anything above that they'd be considered severely stunted). Which seems a little bit off to me, personally.
As far as I'm aware, you can't claim to be under the effects of biomodification unless your character has actually gone through the process through IC means after arriving at the city.

There are absolutely some height/weight combos that are frankly unnerving to imagine when you consider those proportions are most likely to be comparable to a child's, or as some have already mentioned an extremely stunted and malnourished adult who would be too sickly and weak to function, let alone behave as a normal (often even attractive) character running around as if nothing's wrong.

Is there any possibility of fixing the wonky values so people don't roll out of chargen like this? And/or, encouraging those who do to xhelp and have them adjusted accordingly?

People can actually reach out to staff to have their character's weight adjusted if they feel it is too out of whack compared to height.
I don't think I've ever noticed if the weight ranges adjust based on the height category selected, but just in terms of the ones that are there some of the ranges are batty and produce outcomes that are incompatible with life.

I have to assume they're an artifact of players once being able to play as children.

I agree that this needs to be fixed. Especially since we've removed the ability to play children, choosing child-like heights and weights seems like it could be used as a work around coupled with IC characterization/descriptions. There are a few cases in the past few years that I think these things have been used in a way to imply that said character is actually underage without saying it. I don't think that belongs in the game.

I would actually rather have it, though, that players choose their exact height and weight in character. Have some realistic parameters, and, if players want to adjust their height/weight to further extremities, they can pursue it by IC means. If there's an appropriate reason why they believe they me smaller or larger than these parameters, maybe have them @service-request it.

I don't think this would be an artifact of playing a child in Sindome, but rather I think its more a Mars Orbiter problem with a problem of conversions.

My money is that our actual weight is randomized based on height/build (X), and that when it was programmed to roll, it was programmed to roll in Metric, however somewhere someone thought that X was programmed to roll in Imperial, so converted from Imperial pounds down to Metric. Hence why everyone weighs so little because we have Metric weights converted into an imaginary Metric.

Though I have absolutely zero evidence, I'm willing to bet if you convert your character's weight back up from imaginary Metric back up to real Metric (multiply by 2.2) the weight would be more believable in terms of BMI.

I remember being told you can largely just ignore your coded weight and use one that's more realistic. I get that the average mixer is severely malnourished but some of these weights you wouldn't even be alive at.
I think that could be reiterated, but the issue that is being presented here is certain characters using their coded given unrealistic weight/height as a foundational aspect of their identity and whether or not that fits in with the theme.
There are mechanics that revolve around weight and height, so I can imagine it would be very confusing to some if people didn't actually acknowledge their coded weight and height.

However, the weight and height selectors are pretty ridiculous. There should probably at least be an estimation of the range you'd get from each selector in character generation. I doubt anyone realized that selecting 'short' or whatever meant being four feet tall. Ideally a refactoring to make those heights more rare.

"People can actually reach out to staff to have their character's weight adjusted if they feel it is too out of whack compared to height."

TIL this is true! Very handy to know, thank you for mentioning it. I dug up the relevant Town Hall:

Fengshui says loudly, "You can put a service request in if your height/weight don't match what you intended,

but please do this only if it's a really big deal, like you are showing as average but your character is def

not average height or weight. We may deny it, but we can probs make the update for you. Also submit the issue

as an @Bug so we can look into correcting it."

Johnny says loudly, "its a pain to manually change correctly"

Fengshui says loudly, "Yeah, so please don't ask if it's not really important."

I'd like to see tightened ranges or just honestly the ability to select a range then manually put in your height or weight. We can pick our natural hair color and style, eye color, skintone - I don't know why we can't do this at all.

As someone who has had to put in a service request in the past because my character was like 120 pounds, which definitely wasn't average for a character of some height, I think it'd save everyone a lot of trouble.

While there are ways of fixing this after chargen like service requests or biomods, as it was said before some players do not pursue this and stick with the values knowingly, making it a significant part of their character - which is brought up over and over.

I'm of the opinion that just avoiding this by adjusting chargen a little is the best way forward and that any super unusual weight/heights should be the exceptions/by request instead as well.

its pretty transparent that some (read: most) ppl do the "extremely short smol character" thing for fetish reasons, would at least be nice if the height/weight was fixed so people come out at reasonably realistic heights and have to service request if they rly desire to be extremely tiny/extremely tall that bad and if its soooo essential to their character
Honestly I think this whole thing can be fixed by just adding some actual numbers in the chargen to let players know what each option actually means. When I went through chargen myself, I found the options to be very uninformative, and at the end of it I had a character that was very different from what I was expecting the options to be.

I know this isn't the best place for this, but additionally, skintone options should show what text color they actually become when you choose them.

Sounds like a coder needs to go in and look at the numbers. I'll add it to my list. If people have unrealistic numbers, you can submit a service request for what you think they should be and why.

In reality though, this mostly just shows up in your @stats and might show up when someone inspects your corpse, but it doesn't have any real implication on game mechanics. The descriptor, eg. 'short' 'thin' are what is important as that is shown on your shortdesc.

I've made some changes to the BMI calculations for chargen which should result in more appropriate ranges. One thing to keep in mind is that these are ranges and someone could still end up on the extreme end of one of them.
