Help for 'grid-nodes'

GRID NODES

You can view a node with the 'g nodes view ' command.

Nodes are rendered using special tags that anyone can use to make a pretty cool node. There is IC documentation on the grid for how tags work. If you can't figure it out, talk to a decker ICly, they should be able to help.

RECENT AND POPULAR NODES

Nodes that have been edited recently will show up in 'g nodes recent'

Nodes that are popular, will show up in 'g nodes popular'

Popularity is based on how many hits a node gets.

SEARCHING NODES

You can search nodes using the 'g nodes search ' command. This is a good way to discover new and old nodes alike.

NODE LINKS

Nodes can have links. There are 3 different kinds:
- Link to another node (when selected, you visit and view that node)
- Link to a gridmail address (when selected, you start a new gridmail to that address)
- Link to a topic (when selected, you visit and view that topic)

When you visit a node, you can type 'g links' to see the links that the node had, and easily navigate to them with 'g link '

There is no guarantee that a link is valid, and you will get a failure message if it is invalid.

When you visit another node, links will be added to your 'g links'. This will continue until you hit your `link-count` which is defined in the options for the term.

NODE ADVERTISING

Nodes with ads on them, when set up correctly (talk to your local decker if you have trouble) will generate revenue for each unique visit to the node.

A unique visit means a unique PLAYER. Having your node opened by 27 different accounts but all operated by the same player, will get you exactly 1 hit for the purposes of ad revenue.

Chyen is deposited weekly, and does not count against the earnings cap. More information about this can be found IC, on the Grid.

It is your responsibility to get the correct SIC ID into your #ad tag. If you mess it up, you miss out. Hire a decker if you want to be sure.

If someone hacks your node and swaps their SIC ID in to your ad tag, they will start getting the revenue from any hits up until you notice and fix it. That is 100% IC and acceptable. Deckers gotta eat too.

There is a maximum amount of money you can earn from this weekly advertising. It is currently 2500c/week total (across any nodes with your SIC id in the ad tag).

VIEWING NODE SOURCE

You can (if you are on the ACL or have a decent programming skill) use the 'g nodes view-source ' command to view the source code for a node. Who knows what you might find in there? It's a valuable way to gather paydata and better understand how nodes are made.

NODE CREATION

Anyone may create a node, and then edit it, with any term. There is a cool-down on how often you can create a node. Please do not create a zillion nodes unless you have a good reason to.

You can create a node with the 'g nodeman create ' command.

You can see the nodes an account is the owner of with the 'g nodeman mine' command.

Note: Nodes are no longer created when an account is registered. However, nodes that are usernames can only be created by the account that owns that username. If a node pre-exists a user account being created, the ownership of the node will remain with the original creator.

Note: Previously, node creation was case sensitive, meaning you could have a node 'Bob' and another node 'bob'. This will no longer be possible. The nodes that were already created will continue to work, but no new nodes will be allowed if the name exists already.

Note: Prior to release, 5500 nodes that were the 'default content' were deleted. This makes searching and finding useful content much easier, as you have to wade through far fewer useless nodes.

GRID NETWORKED DEVICES

There now exist devices which are networked to the grid. If you know the grid id of a grid enabled device, you may be able to use your term to connect to it, and possibly do things, under the right circumstances.

Some of these devices also support a 'node readout' which essentially means they print data to a node when requested.

This is what the #network-device tag is used for. If you put the grid id of a networked device in the tag, and the device supports a node readout, you will see this show up on your node.

The device must be in an area with SIC signal for the 'node readout' to render on the node.

Do NOT iterate randomly over the numbers to try to find networked devices. There are ways to find them through coding and through IC exploration.

Unlike Programs, you can use the grid id of a grid networked device without having it scanned to your term.

NODE EDITING

Node editing can be done on any term. If you want to learn more about editing nodes, and how it works, search the grid for IC resources, or pay someone to teach you ICly.

Nodes will be parsed when you submit them. If you mess up the tags in your node, you may get an error. This error should help you figure out the problem, or at least give you enough information to ask someone ICly.

You can edit a node with the 'g nodeman edit ' command.

NODE BACKUPS

You can create and store multiple backups of your node. It is a good idea to have a backup in case your node is hacked. You can only keep a limited number of backups.

Backups are created with the 'g nodeman backup ' command.

You can view your backups with the 'g nodeman view-backups ' command.

You can preview a backup with the 'g nodeman preview-backup ' command.

You can restore a backup at any point. Backups can NOT be hacked remotely. However, if someone gets ahold of your account, they can delete your backups.

You can restore a node backup with the 'g nodeman restore ' command.

You can delete a backup with the 'g nodeman delete-backup ' command.

NODE ACCESS CONTROL LIST

The Node ACL will let the owner of a node add additional users to an ACL list. You do this with the 'g nodeman add ' command. If a user is on the ACL, they will be able to 'edit' the node. They will also be able to 'view' the node even if it is toggled to private.

You can remove a user from the Node ACL with 'g nodeman remove '.

You can view the ACL for a node with 'g nodeman view ' command.

NODE TRANSFERS

You can transfer a node from one account to another with the 'g nodeman transfer command. This must be initiated by the node owner. When the transfer is initiated, the node will be in a pending state for 72 hours. If there transfer is not canceled during that time, it will go through and ownership will be changed.

You can view pending transfers (from you to someone else, and from someone else to you) with the 'g nodeman pending-transfers' command.

You can cancel a pending transfer (as the sender or receiver) with the 'g nodeman cancel-transfer ' command.

NODE PRIVACY [PUBLIC AND PRIVATE]

Node owners have the ability to toggle their node to public and private.

To toggle the node privacy you can use the 'g nodeman toggle-privacy ' command.

If a node is private, only the owner and those on the ACL can view it (or its source).
