Clothing

alrighty.
damn.
ok.
there is a tip that reads
TIP: Learn to modify your clothing for your RP
(or something extrememly similar to that)
This tip leads people to believe that they can change their clothing at will if they want. I've done this for several characters, if I find materials laying around. I've asked for GM help when setting up the messagesfor these items and always recieved pleasant help. However I have now been told that its in the rules that we arent allowed to modify clothing ourselves. We shuold find a tailor. Well fuck!

Make it so those poeple who dont possess a tailoring skill cant modify clothes if you dont want them too. I know…I -know- I'm not the only one who mods my own clothes.  ..which reminds me...how did the GM that called me out on this know to call me out? If he was there when i did it a few days ago i would have gladly stopped then if it had been brought to my attention. .. but anyway. my suggestion was that the tip mentioned before be removed to keep people from believing they can change thier clothes. and to write code or somehting that prevents anyone but tailors to alter materials.  I know it can be  done, cuz you cant alter the 5 chyen clothes from that store at the gates. It says Permission denied, or you dont have permission to do that, see a tailor or something... If you can code it like that for those crappy clothes code it for the good stuff too. Dont get in a pissing contest about the rights/wrongs/ or reasons of doing it. The last thing i like to see come across my screen is an Admin or GM or what ever the hell you all like to be called asking me a question they already know the answer too. Just say something like "Exscuse me, you arent allowed to do that." and explain why, then allow me or whoever your talking to a rebutle.  I've been voided so many friggin times and asked about my IC reasons for doing things so often... and I have the reasons. I remember one instance where my char was learning this guy some manners and I was interuted in the middle of it b/c a certain Admin thought I was PKing. When In fact, I didn't kill the guy, nor had any intentions too. Wait until the RP sequence has been quelled before you jump in and start bitching, you guys dont really know whats gonna happen in the future. You see what certain char's are doing and you make assumptions about what we're gonna do and step in and interupt good RP when really there was no need to.

When did it become impossible to mod material? It is not, to my knowledge, against the rules to edit material based clothing. New material based clothing is not introduced into the game as it once was, in fact, since stopped allowing you guys to get free materials, the number of them in the game has been reduced thru natural means by 40%. "Tailors" have a easier time acquiring the resources because they are involved in storylines that give them access to what they need. I should point out here that this isn't to say that you get access because you are a tailor in the historic or statistic sense, but that you are in a storyline that puts you in that role. It it not against the rules to edit material.

What have we often counselled players on concerning material?

Turning material objects into items that look like real coded items. Turning material objects into unthemely items (new shit from the 1950s comes to mind) or items that are well above the cost of the material (expensive electronics). Now, as you are not a seamstress, it would be much more IC for you to get your wardobe from someone else.

And I'm comfortable with the level of paranoia we exhibit. Some people may mind the intrusion, but its right more often than some would like to think.

It is not, to my knowledge, against the rules to edit material based clothing.

Someone seemed to think it was. I was told I wasn't allowed to do it ever again but he'd let me slide this time.

Any questions?
You know where to find me.

Funnily enough, Tool's post wasn't the first I heard about this so called "new rule", one (or more) have cited it on previous occasions.
i assumed it was strongly frowned upon, save in the cases of some mild tweaking of descriptions due to player aesthetic or typos.

i'm a bit baffled as to when or why i assumed this…

I understand the reasons behind stopping the "material" flow into the IC population.  However…  certain characters..  *coughcough*..  Have distinctive dressing styles that are not accounted for with standard clothing articles.  So, of course, they need to make them themselves.

Hell, in real life it's not that hard to make your own clothing.  Look at today's standard "punk" culture.  Most everyone I know who sees themselves as a part of this culture either edits or creates from scratch, all of their own clothing.  Yes, that's "punk," which if I'm not mistaken, "cyberpunk" originally stimmed from.

However, materials seem to "bloat" the MOO.  I'm not really familiar with this term, but I do know that one thing it means is that it slows down how the MOO processes things.  Lag?

Anyway, I think clothing editting is a good idea.  Always have thought it was a good idea.  However, if people want to do it, they have to RP knowing how.  And..  well..  if they know how or have learned how due to IC reasons, I don't think they should be told they can't do it...  *ahem*..

Which brings me to the conclusion of this statement.  Yes, Rastus, it has been brought up in the past.  Yes, it is frowned upon, and is brought up by admin on many occasions.  Also, it does indeed have -OOC- reasons for it to not be in-game..  and IC reasons that it -should- be.  Its a tough subject to bring up (and in the past has been a sensitive issue).  This is how I see it.  And I don't care if anyone agrees with me.
