Cuts, injury..

There is one thing I find odd about the injury system.
Now, granted, if your in critical condition, it will be totally obvious. But, let's say you have a bruise, are in slight pain, and got hit in the chest, while wearing clotheing over it. Is it right for someone to ask what happened, or if you need any help? Not so much a complaint as a question.

But also, if it were wrong, how would something like that be fixed? Through code, @look_place?

Again, not a complaint really, more of me just being confused by some things I've seen.

I think if the injury is visible you should be adding something to your @Look_place, just /something/ to show people that you are in fact, injured.  But a bruise, a cut, etc, until you become wincing in pain, it wouldn't be obvious.

I don't think its a code problem, I think people just need to be aware of the condition there character is in.

Well, I think it might depend on the character looking at you. Like a doctor will notice that you have a sore chest or a slit upper arm, just by looking at how you move. It's sore, it's tender, it hurts to extend and retract the muscle…

And other thing that happens to all is that you get a cut or a bullet to the gut and your clothings remain intact, they don't tear, they don't rip, they don't get bloodstains and most importantly most chars don't change their clothing after a fight...

Or you think that a katana slits thru your gut without ripping thru your clothes? Enven when unarmed, a pull to give you a headbutt will at least wrinkle your clothes, extend that to a real to-the-death fight and you'll have clothes being ripped and torn to shreds.

(Edited by Xeethot at 4:58 pm on Dec. 5, 2004)

Wrinkled clothes, in the Mix especially, arn't signs of  a fight, I don't think…

But as for bruises, I guess it depends on who you are.

If you're some straight off the streets brawler, you get bruised in your chest you arn't gonna walk and act like it. (Believe me, I used to fight alllllllllll the time...)

But if you're some whiney ass corpie girl, sure..

I definately think this is a good opertunity for a @look place.

@look_place me is hunched over in pain.

or

@look_place me is standing tall and acting uninjured.

But it should also come through in your RP. If you a corpie, chances are your not used to pain, and will do things like faint and scream like a girl when your getting shot, while mixers would lay on the ground cripped, yet spitting on your boots and voicing loudly his opinion about your immideate family members and their associations with certian animals while blood runs out the side of his mouth.

Clothing/armor degredation and damage is duely noted.

You will now stain your clothing with blood when you bleed in combat.
Will you be able to "wash" them or "clean" the clothes in some way to remove the splattered blood?

Is it just me or does combat freeze up ALOT lately?

I fought a rat for about 30 minutes….

It attacked, combat froze.
(I attempt to flee for ten minutes, eventually succeeding)
REPEAT...

then miraculously Combat worked.
Weirdness.

I too have had this problem, though fortunately in most circumstances an admin was present in the engagement to sort everything out momentarily…  In those moments where one is not present...fleeing and attacking again usually works.
Combat has been really screwy lately. Of course it's saved me some embarrassing fights while doing things I was being a newb about and forgot initiated combat… >.>...<.<

As for the original topic:

There's the @condition message that I'm sure everyone who reads the boards knows about, but hey maybe not, so here you go.

Yeah I've noticed the weird combat dealie for a while now..  I have no idea what it is.  :(  We've had coders look at it before, think they fixed it, then found out that they didn't..

Aruahghu!  Slither, Wren!  Get to work, n00bs!

Well, since someone has fuxxed up my combat system and I've got some spare time over Christmas, aaaand in the unlikely event someone hooks me up with legit admin access (my backdoors are mine, ALL mine I tell ya!)…

I'll fix combat.

Seriously. :)

I will send a mail to the other admin about it.
Ah well, y'all can't say I didn't offer. :)

Back to work tomorrow. :(

Sorry, I sent the mail out but no one of stature was on recently.  I wouldn't mind picking your brain about the problems we've been having though.. I'm the only active coder, though Wren is around sometimes but he's busy a lot.. and I've delved into a lot of the core code on SD, but not combat at all.  heres just one example:

The main thing seems to be problems with @hated players, as relates to NPCs that either like that player, or like the NPC that is attacking the player thats hated.

So like Asong hates Seven, and he's standing with Chaim, Anastazja and Ellery.  Seven walks in with his posse of NPCs, Zenigra, Chukwuibukm, and Bhamini.

Asong attacks Seven.
Chaim attacks Seven because of helping Asong.
Anastazja attacks Seven because of helping Asong.
Ellery attacks Seven because of helping Asong.
Asong attacks Seven because of helping Chaim.
Anastazja attacks Seven because of helping Chaim.
Ellery attacks Seven because of helping Chaim.
Asong attacks Seven because of helping Ellery.
Anastazja attacks Seven because of helping Ellery.
Chaim attacks Seven because of helping Ellery.
Asong attacks Seven because of helping Anastazja .
Ellery attacks Seven because of helping Anastazja .

Seven attacks Asong because of being attacked by Asong.
Zenigra attacks Asong because of helping Seven.
Chuk attacks Asong because of helping Seven.
Bhamini attacks Asong becuase of helping Seven.
Chuk attacks Asong because of helping Zenigra.
Bhamini attacks Asong because of helping Zenigra.
Zenigra attacks Asong because of helping Chuk.
Bhamini attacks Asong because of helping Chuk.

ETC.

THEN:

Asong attacks Zenigra beacuse of being attacked by Zenigra.
Chaim attacks Zenigra because of helping Asong.
Ellery attacks Zenigra becuse of helping Asong.
etc etc.

THEN:
Chuk attacks Chaim because of helping Bhamini.
etc etc..

All happening in like the first seconds of combat.

Hehe, that's all kinds of fun.

All the @hate code and NPC combat scripty stuff was done after I left so I'm pretty blind on the code involved.

Quick and dirty fix might be to stick a "is in combat" check very early in the relevent NPC code that primes them. (might be :is_combatant() or something like that around somewhere if memory serves.) If they're already in combat, don't attack again, that should stop the churn.

I can see that causing other possible issues though, NPC's not assisting in certain circumstances or reacting sensibly in larger fights… hard to say for definite.

Shouldn't be too difficult to add a few simple checks to smooth things over though, perhaps have NPC's queue additional targets while their current target is still here/alive/standing rather than pingponging around. When the current target goes down, check the queue and if necessary move onto the next hostile...

Blind musings though, it's like 7 years since I last touched any of it. :)

Well, that is only one place i've seen combat break. i dont know if its related, but i've also seen it break one-on-one, npc to pc. dont know if it happens pc to pc, but the other day i was an npc in combat with a pc and it was just the two of us. i attacked, … nothing... he disarmed me... then i just stood there in combat for a few minutes, not attacking, yet still a threat and still threatened until we both backed off and RP'd the situation out.
That's the problem I've heard about alot and seen a couple of times myself. Wouldn't know where to start without looking at that code and probably dropping some debug lines in to see what's happening.

So far as I know it effects all combatants when it happens, so either the combat task isn't initiating properly or something is stalling it… but that doesn't really narrow it down much. :)

Meh. If anyone ever responds favourably to that mail you sent out then I can spare the occasional Sunday evening to fix bugs or whatever. I tried playing on the Sundays I have spare but it's pretty difficult to keep a character and make any progress that way so I gave up. :-)

I still expect to be ignored (or told no) though, after all, I'm probably still out to "destroy the MOO" or tell Johnny he's a total cunt at every opportunity. (and one of those is actually true :))

Incidentally, for the new people, I quote "destroy the MOO" sarcastically. The "Rastus is going to destroy the MOO" story came from my ex-wife's mum, posing as her "room mate" to badmouth me after I split up with her daughter. I kid you not.

Johnny is indeed a total cunt though. :)

Hi Johnny. Any chance of a response? A hug? A hell yeah? :)

*hugz* :johnwoo:
Hell yea, I knew he'd buckle to the temptation of a little man-love eventually.
