Detaining Players for extended periods
Don't do it please!

Hey All -

I want to clarify something for new and old players.

Don't kidnap someone and leave them in a room without RP for extended periods of time. If you have a plot going off and are worried that the player might be left alone for a long time, xhelp and discuss it with a GM.

Kidnapping a player and removing them from RP and locking them away where they can't SIC or call for help might make -IC- sense but we are playing a game here and it would suck to be that guy.

Trust me, it's happened to me in the past. And I am ALL for it not happening to anyone else. This doesn't mean you can't kidnap or lock up-- but you are expected to provide RP. If you are concerned about this, please xhelp and discuss with the GMs what is and is not OK.

Thanks!

This.

It -is- possible to lock a person without any way of escape. But it's boring as fuck. So do what you have to do with the victim, then engage in RP or just kill them.

If you need to pause the scene for a moment to OOCly ask for permission to pursue a longer kidnapping/containment scene, that is within the rules-- but it's within each of your rights to be like 'i would rather be back out in the world or dead by the end of this scene'.

Keeping someone locked away for an hour can seem like a lifetime if you can't RP. We have to balance our IC goals and plots against the loss of fun another player might have if they are contained in one location with no RP.

To be clear though, if you are kidnapping someone and then sit in the room with them (or have someone sitting in the room with them) doing RP and plot and stuff around the kidnapping, that's RP. It's the whole, this person is a problem, I will lock them away for hours or days so I don't have to deal with them thing, that we run into a problem with.

Any other questions on this?

Can't count how many times been kidnapped, or held if WHJ with no Rp for extended periods because of pic timing.. It's a pain yes, but can be fun too. As long as it is fitting to proper reasoning, I have no problem with it.. But I understand how boring it can be when all you want is out. I would agree to OOC discussion in the process of to determine short or long hand, but sometimes that's not available either.. With varying circumstance and preference; it's hard to say what one should do, shy of make sure you're thinking about the other player.

Agreed. Thinking of the other player, and reaching out to staff to get their opinions-- always good options.

Slither, can you identify non-private rooms where PCs can be detained for significant times and come up with an @attention check? Maybe something that displays a counter of how long each PC has been found at a detain point?

- HoJ interrogation

- checkpoints

- jail cells

- holding cells

In some cases its specific locations, in others it's a generic.

Sound like a plan?

Hell yeah, it does!

Sure. I will add it to my TODO.
