Town Hall: Newbie Learning Curve

What follows is my log of the Sindome Town Hall Meeting hosted on Nov 13th. The only modifications have been to remove the general amount of admin-only spam that follows across my scroll. When commenting on portions of this log, please DO NOT quote the entire thing. Copy and paste -a small portion- that is just what you are commenting on. Once again, thanks to all that participated then and those that post now.

Iga asks loudly, "All right, that ends topic 1, on to topic number two: Discuss the Sindome 'Learning Curve' as applied to new players, and ways to decrease the base-level education of new players so they are not intimidated by the scope of the Sindome world. Is expanding @newbie the answer? Or adding help skills to chargen? Giving an IC way to point to game hotspots (Drome, Carnal, Oriface, Grunens, ect) Opening comments?"
Morphix raise hand
Kevlar raises his hand
Aikon raises his hand
Ari raises his hand.
Iga [to Morphix]: your up.
Morphix gets up from the Bleachers.
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* please be sure to emote loudly and speak loudly in the meeting, just a reminder. Thanks. *end transmission*
Morphix says, "As a newbie myself, I think that the @newbie is fine, gives alot os useful information. Along with the web, which is great 2. But I personally have run into problems because they are both out of date. I have had to use the xhelp many more times then i think i should have. If the @newbie and the web were more up to date (ie. getting clothes and scanin at SHI ) then thre wouldnt be a mjor problem."
Iga [to Morphix]: one more comment you have left.
Iga smiles.
Morphix says, "I think giving hotspots would be a great idea. That way newbies would know what to do starting off. Would greatly help people out."
Morphix sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Morphix.
Iga [to Kevlar]: your up.
Kevlar gets up from the Bleachers.
Kevlar says loudly, "This comes back to there being more RP right off the bat."
Miranda raises a hand.
Kevlar says loudly, "I feel the need for 'immideate interaction' from the moment they step through the dorr, but have not heard a good workable solution for what that interaction should be."
Allandra raises her hand.
Kevlar says loudly, "I'de love to hear comments on what we can do to immideately involve players when they're no one on. No GM's, no players. Because it can and will happen. And it does all too often."
Kevlar sits down on the Bleachers.
Trancer raises his hand
Iga nods to Kevlar.
Iga [to Aikon]: your up
Aikon gets up from the Bleachers.
Aikon says, "I think walking people through how to use the term (yes I know it's explained somewhere) would go a long way for improving the learning curve, and always making sure the maps are up to date, (which they pretty much are) and I still think hired pc's would be a good way to get noob's started… though it would have to be monitored by an admin...."
Aikon sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Aikon.
Iga [to Ari]: your up
Ari gets up from the Bleachers.
Ari says loudly, "As far as the curve is concerned… newbies will have very very very little background knowledge about anything in the game. Albiet, experienced RPers will be better off, but they will still not go flying. IC way to point to hotspots. MORE RP at those hotspots. And helping out newbies if they need it, are a few ways to help that. Another problem with the curve... stats. Its not the basis of the game, but usually dictates whether a newbie can get a job with someone or not. Perhaps have billboards or 'robotic drones' that are like advertisements to lead people to the bars. Maybe even IC signs that show hotspots, or how to get to them. I agree completely with Kev though, RP -right- off the bat. Perhaps have a few players that are active be part of a Newbie Team. If someone logs on, and its one of their first few times on, the -team- gets a message. (Or one/two random non-idle player on that team.) Another idea, and this is what helped me when I was new WAY back when... was some form of OOC chat. I know it was removed for a reason... but maybe a chat in some form or another would be helpful? I dunno. Its a suggestion, only because its what helped ME."
Ari nods.
Ari sits down on the Bleachers.
Marcus raises his hand.
Iga [to Miranda]: your up.
Miranda nods to Iga.
Miranda gets up from the Bleachers.
[OOC: Miranda says, "un second, copying and pasting…"]
Miranda says loudly, "I think that some sort of script with a couple of NPCs outside the city gates that -made- the newbie rp with a bot for a few minutes prior to insertion in the city would help. This might have been discussed before, "
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* remeber to keep messages under 400 characters please!*end transmission*
[OOC: Miranda says, "argh.. mutiple qutoes "]
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* that is roughly 100 words or so. Give or take.*end transmission*
Miranda says loudly, "but perhaps give some sort of "mission" to the newbie so they can get a little extra pocket chas maybe 150 to 200 chyen. And during this scripted mission, they learn some about the games hotspots, coded commands and maybe there could be a way to force them to emote and not rely on coded commands to finish the "mission""
Ari nods.
Morphix nods.
Miranda [to Iga]: i think thats all
Miranda smiles.
Miranda sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Miranda.
Iga [to Allandra]: your up.
Allandra eyes Miranda and sticks her tongue out, "That's what I was just gonna say, the NPC could even give em directions, what to look for as far as who to stay away from and stuff"
Allandra says loudly, "Directions to the Drome to drop something off, to Orifice to check if his girl was working."
Miranda sticks her tongue out at Allandra with her thumb on her nose.
You raise your hand in the air.
Iga [to Allandra]: any other comments?
Allandra shakes her head and says "No that's it"
Iga nods to Allandra.
Iga [to Trancer]: your up
Trancer nods.
Trancer gets up from the Bleachers.
Trancer says loudly, "On the issue of involving people when no GM's or players are around…I'm forced to say that since no-one has ever really come up with a good idea for solving this, I'm not sure there is. There are some problems we can't fix with code or NPC's...the playercount and involving players in times like the one Kevlar mentioned are such problems, in my opinion. Some kind of 'automated RP' isn't really that enjoyable, even compared to RP at all; again, just my opinion."
[OOC: Trancer says, "Er, that was supposed to read "even compared to no RP at all" *"]
Trancer says loudly, "And I think the ideas mentioned about some more active advertisements / street murmur about the hotspots is a good idea, definately preferred over putting "The Drome is a very active spot." in @newbie, or something to that extent. And I like Miranda's idea about some kind little mini-mission right off the bat for immigrants is a good one. I don't think the learning curve is really that bad these days, especially with the terminal maps."
Trancer sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Trancer.
Iga [to Marcus]: your up
Marcus nods.
Marcus gets up from the Bleachers.
Marcus says loudly, "Ok, here goes. Seeing as how I'm not a newbie (or I like to think I'm not), and haven't been through char-gen in a while, I haven't really had a problem with experiencing this. I do remember, however, that when I was a newbie, things were definitely alot more active, more players, etc, which really helped newbies to get on their way with commands and what not. But I also agree that @newbie should be updated somewhat. I'm not saying it should tell you how to play the game, but it should maybe give some helpful tips to get a new player off the ground. "
Marcus says loudly, "Or if not @newbie, then maybe make some sort of IC pamphlet and give it to newbies when they get here that lists info and stuff about hot spots on RED/GOLD/GREEN/BLUE and what have you. Maybe a list of people to get ahold of, and I'm not talking like fixers or anything. I'm talking like big corporate heads, or big guys on the streets that aren't necessarily corpies. Or maybe not even a physical pamphlet. Maybe it could be connected to SIC somehow."
Marcus says loudly, "Like a different command other than Chelp. Coders or scripters could make a menu-like system to navigate new options on the SIC, giving info about districts of the city and what not. I don't know if any of this is good, but it's out there. Criticize away. "
Marcus sits down on the Bleachers.
[+][Bit-Chat] Gitzo says, "ack… sorry johnny."
Marcus says loudly, "I'm not one for talking much..."
Iga nods to Marcus.
Iga [to You]: your are up.
Ari raises his hand.
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* 7 minute warning on this topic because I forgot to look at the clock! *end transmission*
You say, "We do have automated information telling newbies where to get work. Advertising the mix hotspots isn't logical, they 1.) don't have the money to advertise and 2.) don't need to ICly. Any advertisements would be made by entities that can afford to do so at the best price, namely, the corporations."
Ratchet is summoned in by Iga.
Ratchet sits down on the Bleachers.
Trancer shakes his head and says, "No."
Trancer nods.
You say, "and we are working on things like the 'How to be Cyberpunk' guide and there will be an IC version as well as improvements in the term access."
[OOC: Trancer says, "Sorry, typo."]
The Grande Amphitheatre
The space you stand in is a massive dome, the ceiling so high up it is obscured in utter darkness. From those inky depths neon lighting flashes down around you, the digital ether filled with the glow of neon blue and argon green laser light that flashes and draws holo ads across the wide, disturbingly blank walls around you. The large space has a vaguely colosseum shape to it, a loose oval that at times feels over a half mile wide. Terraced rows of large, comfortable seats spiral down from the inky heights above you, sloping slowly towards a central dais that floats above a small empty circle only 20 feet in diameter. The stage hovers over 50 feet in the air, wires, cables, and electronic lighting dangling from it's underbelly. The space looks like it could hold hundreds of thousands of people comfortably, even though only a fraction of that is in use. Figures flicker and phase in and out in the stands, occasionally holding cohesion long enough to be recognized as the ghosts from events long past. A member of Baby-Smashers here, Lucifer there, and any number of the faceless masses that surround you on a daily basis. Suspended from above is a massive holographic display, that has the words 'LOOK AT THE SIGN' scrolling across it over and over.
You, Richard, Allandra, Morphix, Aikon, Ari, Miranda, Trancer, Marcus and Ratchet are sitting in the bleachers, watching.
You see a Sign.
Retarded Iga is not sleeping here. Chipp and Silvan are sleeping here.

You say, "I never got up, bad Johnny."
Ari chuckles.
Johnny pretends to sit down.
Iga asks loudly, "Any other comments on this topic?"
Ari raises his hand.
Iga nods to Ari.
Iga [to Ari]: your up
Ari gets up from the Bleachers.
Ari says loudly, "Biggest one I can think of… to what Johnny said about no ads. Ads don't need to be billboards. You could always have a NPC tell the player to 'follow' him. Or something. Just to get them into the game. Maybe even walk them through how to access the term from the start would be an idea. The maps -may- also want to have some kind of RP mark on the hotspots. So players know."
Ari says loudly, "Regardless... I still think my little newbie idea works well. It may be a -bit- OOC... but it can help newbies get their feet wet."
Ari says loudly, "The newbie team, that is. "
Ari giggles.
Ari nods.
Ari sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Ari.
Iga asks loudly, "All right, anyone else?"
Ratchet raises his hand.
Iga [to Ratchet]: your up
Ratchet gets up from the Bleachers.

Ratchet says, "Um…I think it's cool to implement ways for a person to learn what they need to survive as a newbie. The newbie team has been suggested and attempted in teh past... and is on the right track but might be limited..."
Ari . o O ( It was attempted? )
Ratchet says, "I think the whole community as a whole needs to adopt an attitude of being overly helpful to new players...yes it messes a bit of OOC, but it keeps people around. "
Ratchet sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods.
Morphix nods.

The meeting continued with the next topic.

I think the better newbie initiation events are excellent ideas.  The NPC job-based introduction would be a great way for the newbie to learn a few spots (the NPC could give directions along with his job-request), and the newbie could make some extra chyen as well that could be used for whatever they wish.

As there are already NPCs appearing and dissappearing left and right all over the place, I'm sure that many more interesting things can be created with the randomizing tools used in this process.  An example was given with one of the suggested newbie inititation jobs:  Find some girl (random NPC) working in the Oriface (or something to that extent), and maybe get some info from her, or something interesting.  COuld be a code-word or whatever.  The NPC could give the newb the money to get into the Oriface, or there could be something that let them in that once for free (I know its possible to get in for free..  right?).  Maybe its all for a codeword or something?  The newbie asks her the question and gives her a codeword, and she gives him an actual code for something (maybe a locker or room code..  doesn't matter, as it wouldn't actually be used in-game, and the player will never know what its too anyway), which the newb will return to the NPC at the beginning and tell him, getting paid for it, and learning a hotspot (and maybe RPing with any PCs that were there) in the process.

My that was longwinded.

The maps, though awesome and very handy (especially to newbies, and also to some oldbies), should be updated.  THe problem with this is that a player created them through IC means.  That player as far as I know is no longer active, so that poses a problem.  If someone else can make new ones, or update those ICly, it would be great.  But I don't think it should fall completely on the admin's collective shoulders.

The Newbie-Team idea is a very good one, however we currently don't have enough of an active playerbase to ensure this as an option.  We get guests and newbies poppin' in all hours of the day, and there aren't always other players around.  Though its a good idea, it may not be plausible, even ignoring the OOC nature of it.  For this reason I have to agree with the point brought up by Trancer on unavailability of GMs and players 24/7.

As far as the "hotspots" issue goes, that can be addressed with more NPC-related jobs.  Should build more money (though not an insane amount of course) for newbs (and maybe bored midbies/oldbies when no one else is around), and create interesting errand-webs from one "hot-spot" to another.  I'm sure eventually they'll run into the Drome or Carnal Desires when there's a bunch of people drinking or having a barfight.  Who knows, right?  'Course there should be a limit on the jobs thing.  Maybe have a particular guy at each place who gives'em, and only have like one a day or so?  Still, that's a good amount of places to visit in a day, plus you got Bruce, SHI, Stev, and anything else you might wanna add.  That should stop some people from complaining, right?  And if that increases the money too much, you can always jack up certain prices to adjust the economy.
