Town Hall: Understanding Cyberpunk

What follows is my log of the Sindome Town Hall Meeting hosted on Nov 13th. The only modifications have been to remove the general amount of admin-only spam that follows across my scroll. When commenting on portions of this log, please DO NOT quote the entire thing. Copy and paste -a small portion- that is just what you are commenting on. Once again, thanks to all that participated then and those that post now.

Iga asks loudly, "All right, the next topic is: General player understanding of the Cyberpunk Theme, and Realism within this theme. Opening comments?"
Kevlar raises his hand
Miranda rasies a hand.
Iga [to Kevlar]: you are up
Kevlar gets up from the Bleachers.
Kevlar says loudly, "Cyberpunk is different things to different people, blah blah blah, yackity schmackity, you've heard this all before so I won't repeat it."
Kevlar says loudly, "It's also a dark and soulless world. And people work very hard at trying to bring soul to it, and get very depresssed when they get trashed."
You say, "http://www.sindome.org/cyberpunk.shtml"
Ari raises his hand.
Kevlar says loudly, "You really shouldn't take this to heart. But people do all the time. They get VERY upset when their player get's fucked over in the most gruesom and vengeful of ways."
Morphix's body goes limp as he slumps to the ground unconscious.
Kevlar says loudly, "I wish this wouldn't happen. I don't know what else to say, ither than don't take it personallyu."
Kevlar sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga [to Kevlar]: very good point.
Iga [to Kevlar]: thanks.
Iga [to Miranda]: your up
Miranda gets up from the Bleachers.
Miranda says, "Should there be a CP tutorial for newbs who dont know what CP is? When I was a new newb i had no clue b/c i'd never heard of CP until an extremely close someone told me about Sd. I lost chars left and right whil i learned. then i lost 'em cuase of the style of RP i had. If a tutorial exsists make a big flashy something that tells newbs to read it. It would have helped me alot i know. And now when i make a char it's based on whatever style of CP i'm reading at the time. "
Miranda says, "ummm… thats it."
Miranda sits down on the Bleachers.
Trancer raises his hand
Iga nods to Miranda.
Iga [to Ari]: your up
Iga [to Ari]: sir?
Iga [to Ari]: you are up for commenting…
Ari gets up from the Bleachers.
Ari says loudly, "Was typing. ;)"
Iga chuckles.
Ari says loudly, "I agree with Kev... 100%. I have, in the past, gone through hell and high water. Deaths, raids, theivery, backstabbing, loss of good friends, betrayal by OOOOOLD friends, sudden WJF attacks, etc. All in a days work, as far as I'm concerned. My issue is when it comes off poorly. Like, a raid goes down while you are logged off. There is no real RP there. So long as RP is involved, so long as that adrenaline rush runs... then yea, it's definately worth it. And anger may persist, its human nature... but so long as it doesn't last. You're fine. Cyberpunk is DARK. Period. You should manipulate your way around, find the loopholes, orchestrate stuff. Hell, people backstabs and work around others on a DAILY BASIS... no need to ruin friendships when the same damn thing comes back to your doorstep. You reap what you sew, my friends... and its the bloody truth (straight from the horses mouth.)"
Iga bracesses for impact.
Lillith's body goes limp as she slumps to the ground unconscious.
Kevlar nods to Ari.
Ari says loudly, "And that link Johnny posted NEEDS to go in ahead of chargen. (I one had an idea that players setup all their char information, and then setup skills prior to history approval. That may work.)"
Johnny points out that Jinkorei wrote the cyberpunk guide.
Ari exclaims loudly, "That kind of information needs to be THROWN, THRUST, EJECTED at newbies. They need to eat, sleep, breath, and drink the stuff... THEN... THEN we have an awesome RP world with amazing code to boot!"
Ari stands up on a soapbox, "I AM SINDOMIAN!!! BOOOOYA!"
Ari calmlies sit.
Ari sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga chuckles.
Trancer grins mischievously.
Iga nods to Ari.
Iga [to Trancer]: your up Gee.
Trancer nods to Iga.
Trancer gets up from the Bleachers.
McClure looks sideways and rolls his eyes before grinning.
Trancer says loudly, "Mad props to Jink for writing the guide. It's been needing for a very, very, very long time."
Gitzo nods to Jinkorei.
Timmy prevents himself from being booted for idling.
Trancer says loudly, "Nothing ruins RP quite as quickly as 2 newbies walking into the Drome, and acting like morons. I think a guide like this will help quite a bit."
Lillith opens her eyes slowly and looks around.
Lillith sits down on the Bleachers.
Ari . o O ( She missed my soapbox… phewy. )
Lillith . o O ( My bad.. )
Johnny reminds people to avoid spam by following the rules.
Iga [to Trancer]: finished?
Trancer says loudly, "One of my biggest bones-to-pick with newbies is their lack of any concept of CP whatsosever, causing disruptions like I just mentioned. Somewhat hypocritical, as I remember with extreme clarity how I thought and acted when I first arrived here. But, I don't think I ever RP'ed worth 2 shits stuck together until I read Neuromancer–not necessarily because by and large it's the CP bible (keep the Gibson and anti-Gibson remarks out, that's not my point), but because it gave me a sense of CP, and what it encompassed, at least from some kind of perspective. So, I just want to say, put that link in chargen, put in in @newbie, and put it somewhere very clearly on the homepage."
Trancer says loudly, "Sorry for the slowness, I didn't have the chance to pre-type it."
Trancer sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Trancer.
Iga [to Trancer]: good point, read the foundations of the genre
Iga smiles.
Trancer nods.
Iga asks loudly, "Any other comments on this?"
Navarre glances around nervously.
Iga says loudly, "Last call for this topic"
Jinkorei raise my hand

The meeting continued with the next topic.

I think everyone here brought up some good points.

When I first came to SD I did not know what cyberpunk was.  I learned from watching and interacting (and later hearing about) with other characters such as Moss, Maxwell, McClure, Lucifer, John, Dominik, Desolate, Gerik, Rigby, etc., etc.  Though I am not an oldbie by many of their standards, I have had the pleasure of RPing with them (however briefly) and learning from them what it's truly like to be CP.  What depressed me is that most of those PLAYERS are now gone, for whatever reason.

It was not until Johnny gave me a copy of Neuromancer did I really understand the sheer magnitude of the genre.  I had read previously a -few- CP books, but none really were as psycologically appealing as that one.  Though however good Neuromancer -is-, it does not encompass the entire CP genre.  It doesn't even come close to covering it all.

CP is like a hardcore version of the real world.  Withmore City is like Dante's Divine Comedy, with RED being Hell itself.  You MUST realize this.  It -sickens- me every time someone is seen killed, and a character nearby begins screaming about how horrible it is.  If its your FRIEND, it MIGHT be understandable.  But you're on RED for christ's sake.  It happens EVERYWHERE, EVERY SECOND SOMEONE IS SUFFERING OR DYING.  You have to take into account the ambients.  Read the descriptions, for God's sake.  THINK about the power behind such horrible things on RED.

Think if your character truly BELONGS there.  I've noticed that though its not NEARLY as bad as it used to be, there are many "fluffy bunnies" still walking the streets of Withmore.  And that's rather sad.  You can be nice, yes.  But don't be so ignorant as to ignore the world around you.

Also, Cyberpunk may seem different to you all.  But you all HAVE to agree with this:  STYLE.  OVER.  SUBSTANCE.  This does not mean all characters must go out with a bang.  Sometimes it is truly beautiful (in a CP way of course) when someone is killed in the street by their enemy after months of horrible abuse, leaving behind only 43c and a flashlight amongst their tattered clothing.  Its almost surreal.

That is style.  That is CP.  You can leave an ugly corpse, that's fine.  But its the beauty within the pain and suffering that makes you think.
