A poll for what we need

Okay, Firestorm and myself were talking earlier and we want to know what would make the game more interesting and enjoyable.

I'm not looking for responses like 'Cybernetics' and 'The Matrix'.  Also I'm not looking for things that change the fundemental aspects of the game, IE: a new combat system.

It's not that I don't think those ideas are important, I just don't think they will happen right now, and I want to keep this thread to things that we can do -now-.

I am looking to know what you think would make the game better.  What would make you want to login to the GRID more, what would be good to have for when other players aren't around so that you can be entertained.

Try to think of things that don't involve a whole bunch of new and hard to write code..  So lets hear it, we want the game to be better as much as you do and we need your help to figure out how to do it.

Well, I don't know about simplicity of code here, but there was one thing I should have put on my first page on the idea (the one where I humiliated myself).

The pose system is…too much.  I think I may have a way to simplify it, at least to the player anyway.

Emotes are written as we see them, and also as the player will see them.  Rather than have to use a system of stylizing the verbs for us just so we can point our emotes at people's names, just make it like this.  (again I'm thiefing)

emote looks at #cregg  (or if you read my previous ideas, this would be anything that describes that person, such as #short, #tall, #fat etc...) and smiles coyly, "Fuck you mate."

Cregg would see

Jacob looks at you and smiles coyly, "Fuck you mate."

If someone hadn't recog'd Cregg or Jacob -they- would only see...

A short balding man looks at a tall fat man and smiles coyly, "Fuck you mate."

Posing forces you to use the normal verb with a period in front of it, thus forcing you to change the entire verb form of the sentence.  Verbs must be normal tense, but what if your writing everything else in different tense, can get a little nutso at times.  With emotes, what you put is what they see, and you'd only have to work with either a person's name with a # or their short descrip.

Items or objects in the world could be referenced in emotes as well.  Say for instance a dumpster.

emote smiles at #cregg and points at @dumpster.

Jacob smiles at you and points at a garbage filled dumpster.

Think that all looks right...

i think the actual gameplay and RP is going well. Most active characters are involved somehow in a storyline, and the newbies (of which we've had quite the influx of immies in the last couple weeks) are getting settled and finding their niche, so the question therein lies with the background stuff.

I am a firm believer that Larri and Bruce should reset the timers at midnight instead of 24hrs +- random few minutes. the characters would get the same number of runs, without the "Come back tomorrow"… tomorrow being 15 minutes from now...

yeah, that's all i can think of. Dam's pose idea is kinda cool, but i love .pose. i use it all the time, including sometimes in IM. heh.. it does take some getting used to, but after its mastered, is very rewarding.

and i did like the "You dont know me until you @recognize target as this" thing. i've seen that in a different core, and it made for fixing the ever popular, "Yes, my name tag says Gordon, but call me Alf," issue.

I've played quite a few muds with "recognition" code…its usually all good to one player goes up to another a "describes" every other character they know to them.

If you wanna disguise yourself, use the skill...people are gonna twink out if they wanna twink out. Bare in mind, sometimes people are notorious as well...I may not know you, but I've heard of you...you might be a judge with a name tag on, a horribly scarred man, or maybe its the tattoos.

If recognition code was used...reputation would need to be a variable, but hey...its an idea, right? :)

I want skills to be used. There are ALOT of skills in the game, that have NO purpose. Granted, that could involve alot of code...but if you could make a more functional skills. That'd be nice.

Its difficult for me to have ideas that don't involve too much code, because I feel like no matter what...you gotta be ballz out and code with this stuff.

Regarding the grid, it just needs more transparency with the rest of the game. There's no databases. So it can't really hold that much data. If you want a good example of a way to go about designing a system with more hacking...check out a game called Uplink. Lord knows, I'm not asking for that...but just check it out. See how data is relayed and what not.

But yeah, that one would require alot of coding...so I'm just gonna list some skills that seem useless and add some uses.

Artistry -
DOA. Doesn't do shit. Performers are cool though, and make awesome characters. Maybe a verb on $instrument items? Too get a response when used in a properly flagged "venue". (Iga's idea.)

Munitions -
DOA. Modifications to firearms. Laser sighting, scopes, etc. Stupid shit…but maybe adds bonuses...nothing out of control. Just something good enough for there to be a guy who makes chy outfitting weapons.

Chemical -
Never used it. Can you really make drugs with it?

Stimsimming -
Yeah, uh, fuck it. Useless until there are other more important skills being used in game.

Programming -
Adds to grid rolls, methinks. It'd be nice if there was some e-note cross compatibility.

Systems -
Same with Programming.

Cracking -
Same with Programming/Systems.

Secure Tech -
DOA. Will players ever be trusted to open locked doors? Maybe a @request system. Asking permission to an online GM to ATTEMPT to open up a door. If there's no GM online, your fucked...break and entering should have repercussions. If there's not a GM to attend to those. No dice.

Auto Tech -
Cars can have break downs on the GM side...but can't be fixed?! Major bummer. It'd be nice if this skill could be used at designated facilities if you had access to use said tools.

Electro-Tech -
There are some uses. Minimal at best. Chalk it up along the lines of Programming/Cracking/Systems.

Thats about it…
The grid just needs to be maintained too. Whens the last time someone changed the Welcome page? January? Mercy. No one's gonna use the grid if it looks like its ignored by the GM's and the entire playerbase.

Just my 2 chy.

Honestly breaking into doors shouldn't be as restricted as it is, doors are meant to be broken into.  Since this is the future, lets allow that to happen, but oops…there's a camera/SIC scanner staring straight at you.  Might not get busted now without any admin on, but the moment they read the logs...

The recognition code does have a few setbacks, as Bio pointed out, it becomes somewhat useless if people run around sharing names and information.  But the way I see it, that's not supposed to happen, at least experienced players who actually know what they're doing would leave that alone.  They wouldn't want to give out the name of their contact/fixer/crooked judge...then it would become their loss.  Names would become an economy of their own, there might be chyen involved.  And yes, the username issue would be resolved.  Because whatever name you gave a person would be what they seen...so for all they know your Asshat.  Then disguise would be more useful...who cares about your name, you'd only need to hide that ugly mug :D

Wish I had something useful to say about the grid, but I've never really used it for naught but sending pms or replying to posts...it is to my character what the bgbb is to me I suppose.  Just a place to communicate.

Oh, and nuke launchers.  Always good when you can irradiate a small country.

For every action, an equal and opposite reaction.
For everything built up, a few ways to tear it down.
For every door that can be locked, multiple means to open it.

Right now the answer is RP, or tools. All good things. Access can probably be gained into everything in-game, which is perfect.

But the way I see it, the more ways a character can get screwed over, the better. Can't miss security you never had, or gained the expectation of. Ups the ante.
If we generate something new, let's just keep this in mind. That goes for new objects, new locations, or new plots.

We're shooting for a code-dependant environment which approaches a level of interactivity much like that of the real world, aren't we?

Mmmmmanipulation.

Just because it's realistic doesn't mean we should do it. All you've done with this solution is encourage mass-sleeper-theft and make a lot more work for the GM's, without actually creating more opportunities for good RP.

I've never met a locked door that stopped good RP. Never. Not once in all my time in playing/working here. Often times locked doors make for fantastic RP, as they are one of the few things in the game which offer even a modicum of security when your not logged in.

If your asking for a golden bullet, or even a coded solution to your problem of not being able to get behind the door you want, I suspect you'll be disappointed.

However if you apply yourself, and really work at it, solutions have a way of presenting themselves. The answer to your problem with locked doors is RP. No, it's not going to open that door for you, but it will maintain the balance of the game without throwing what little security our poor players had when they're not at the keyboard to the wolves without any opportunity for human intervention, and you'll have a lot more fun than if you just gave up on it completely because you know the tools to help you aren't coded.

Locked doors are already surmountable barriers, and do not require code to overcome. Making them less of a barrier would only make the game much much harder, not more fun.

Well, I wasn't meaning exactly that where sleepers are involved.  We've had this discussion many times, and honestly, I've come to respect the idea that nabbing sleepers would just take away from the fun.  What I mean moreso are those doors that won't contain a sleeper.  Having the admin take care of the issue is excellent, but they can't always be expected to be there.  Gotta sleep sometime (sleepy bastids…)

:)
As long as I can put 40 Ue in a skill and have it count for something, I'm happy…and if it doesn't I'll do it anyway.

Opening doors isn't my primary concern. Having skills not be useless is. Although, I do agree with what has been said here.

At the very least, maybe there should be a list of skills newbies should NOT invest UE in.

i pos def agree with this. A little direction for the newbies would be a good thing. a disclaimer at the beginning of the skill selection, or strikethru on the skills that are not implemented.

Well…I dunno about that..  See, being that Sindome's actually been played for quite some time, some might be put off by the fact that after so much time there are still things not 'implemented.'

When I skimmed through, yeah, I made a character that well, sucked ass, skills were spread out in no particular order with not a character idea in sight.  And that character lived happily, albeit lonely and full of useless skills for a whole...two weeks methinks.  I didn't know, and in that ignorance, there was bliss.  Wasn't till later that I found out it wasn't finished.  And as a player that had been here a while, the impact meant a little less to me.

Now mind you, I'm not saying these things shouldn't be imped, or that they should simply be removed.  But the standard surfer on the passby might not give the time of day if he gets to chargen and notices not half the skills are there.  They couldn't see that this was because the other skills were just too effective that balance was in question.  And they wouldn't know that a way to distribute that skill into roleplay would have to be considered.  Like art, what is art?

I shit on canvas, and-a freeze dry it...viola!  Art.
If your going to use a disclaimer...don't use 'not implemented' use something that will still get the noobs in.

Just my overly-long thoughts on that.

Outside of the other ideas I've had, there's a certain place which could use some Admin love desperately…escpecially since its almost done. :aikao:
Was anything ever done or is being done as regards to this? Or was this just some sick scheme for where we should complain?

P.S. 500 posts!

I'm still going through and trying to get stuff done, but with RP and other coding projects its coming along slow.
