Dirty Clothes!

@idea from Damus

I've noticed that alot of people stink lately, but they can just hop into the showe (clothes and all) and come out smelling fresh. I think, that over time, clothes should also gain an aroma, if you will, that is tied in with charisma and small and all that. The idea is pretty self explanitory, and opens up opportunities for jobs and businesses like laundromats and washers and dryers and such. I'm thinking something that you can put maybe 10 materials in, slot like 50c, then wait for a while to get your clothes, perhaps while kicking back with an issue of the flipside while you wait. It could play a message every 30 seconds, and basically do to your clothes what a shower does to you.

I like this idea.  I've been thinking myself that once you go into somewhere dirty, say the sewers, you get a message tagged onto your description (kinda like the tired haggard look you get when you use drugs.) Something like so and so's clothes are nearly ruined covered in somethin unmentionable.  Or so and so is completely covered in raw sewage.  Maybe add it to thier @look_place message.  Well that's my two cents.
hrm…. wouldn't those lovely self drying showers kinda work like walk in washing machines? in THEORY of course....

hope in a shower fully clothed... get all pretty and washed up dry.. run out the door to get all dirty again!

IT'S PERFECT!

*nods*

yep....

sorry.... i'm just lazy... or maybe it's rushed... and i really whish something like that existed on some days :P

weeee double posts! i bless thee!

I also think that having it so that when people walk through the sewers and such, there should be something attached onto their description, because now, the only way that you can tell is to smell them, which, most likely, will get you beat up.

I really want to hear what some upper management think about materials getting dirty, and the proposed washer/dryer units that would spring up laundromats.  Perhaps there could be a few predefined messages for dirty materials, depending on if it's cloth or paper or whatever, so that a player can choose the appropriate one while @naming the material.

Things could get dirty of time at a rate that increases as you wear your clothes, and dirties up automatically if it's worn or dropped through the sewers, or is in someone's hands.

I also like the idea of it tying in with charisma, because in real life, clothes are one of the first things that you notice on someone, and whether they're dirty, clean, wrinkled, etc.  Can tell you alot about someone's personality.

I'm just throwing some ideas around, let me know what you think.

I like the idea I really do…but I do think it's getting just a bit too detailed...like having to eat...and would most likely be a waste of valuble code time It's too tedious
yeah.. its the aspect of.. making it too much like… doing chorse in real life :P....  that makes me pause.

i mean the "OOC: brb gota do the laundry!" messages are one thing... i've done that myself...
but then having to ICly go "hold that drug deal/mugging/drink, i got do my laundry!"

*giggles*

Hey guys, Switch here. Yeah, it sounds like a good idea. But..like she said, it WOULD take alot of programming..not necisarilly wasting, but..yeah. Still, great idea though. Would make the game much more realistic..
Ahh dee ohs
I always remove all my clothes when I shower.

and when I go to bed

even if I'm the only one there.

I'm either a purist, a freak, or both.

Thing with clothes getting dirty, is alot of people wear leather and stuff, and you can't wash that in a washing machine anyway.

You know, you could always just RP washing your clothes, if it's that important to you!

.stuff a bundle of clothes into the washing machine, and .lean against a nearby wall, wearing nothing more than a smile and wishing I had bought a spare set of clothes before I went sewer crawling.

:)

I agree
Why not have a dirtiness message to go along with the smell, sort of along the lines of the wound and drug messages, something appended at the end of one's desc?
RPing washing your clothes isn't the same as actually having to wash them, if your clothes could change your smell, even if you've just had a shower, or would make you look unwashed, people would know that you're poor and probably live and red and just don't care that you stink.

Also, IRL, your first impression of a person is usually formulated by looking at what they're wearing, and how clean or dirty it is. You could be Brad Pitt, but if you're wearing nasty clothes, people are going to think less of you based on that right away. I think dirty clothes are pretty important ICly, if you want a clean char, you should work for it, the dirty people in the slums IRL are lazier than a well-kept person from the 'burbs. I think you should ICly have hygiene that, if you're lazy and blow it off, affects your appearance and what people think of you.

Shouldn't that depend on what character you -want- to play rather than if you have time to perform some mundane and pointless task? I dunno, I RP for adventure and fun, and a fair amount of realism is good, but if I want to get my jollies by doing laundry, I have a machine and dryer right here. Getting one's character dirty and taking a shower, it's not much of a hassle. You go to wherever the shower is, and type 'shower'. But who wants to type

remove shoes
remove socks
remove trousers
remove jacket
remove hat
remove toupee
remove underwear
remove undershirt

put shoes in washer
put socks in washer
put trousers in washer
put jacket in washer
put hat in washer
put toupee in washer
put underwear in washer
put undershirt in washer

get shoes from washer
get socks from washer
get trousers from washer
get jacket from washer
get hat from washer
get toupee from washer
get underwear from washer
get undershirt from washer

wear underwear
wear undershirt
wear socks
wear shirt
wear trousers
wear toupee
wear jacket
wear hat        ?

I'm not saying you're going to smell rancid after a day of not washing your clothes, plus, you don't put toupees, shoes, and all in the washer. I'm talking subtle, like in a week you start to smell a little musky, then just some BO, etc. Plus, it makes the sewer-loving people have something else they need to do after they tromp around in there, other than a 10 second shower with their clothes on. It shouldn't be a daily task to wash all your stuff, but a weekly one. And who says you should have to take it all of manually like that. How about this?

wash clothes in washer

That could automate the whole task, have you remove everything you're wearing, stick it in the washer, then take it out and stick it back on you. That wouldn't be too hard to do once a week or less.

All clothes are materials, so you could end up putting notes in the shower and any material-made objects in the shower.

And how can an automatic system -properly- modify a player-made desc to make it seem dirty?

Todd is wearing pristine shiny white latex pants, with felt hearts sewn at the knees. It is very dirty.

And further than that, do you really want the admins to be putting time into this rather than on something exciting, like cyberware, the matrix, and so on?

I said the system should take off everything a player is -wearing.- Usually I don't wear my notes and such.

As for the description, you could add it on down by the haggard message.

'Player's clothes look like they haven't been washed in a while, and are emitting a funky odor.'

And of course I'd rather have the cyberware and the matrix before this, I'm not saying this should be implemented now, it's just kind of a "hey, I had an idea, what do you guys think?" sort of deal.

If it just takes what you're wearing, the the laundromat would be full of naked people. That, and people wear things besides clothes, like watches, holsters, sheathes, material-made earrings, boots, you name it.
And what if only, say, a guy's socks are dirty?

At any rate, I can't really see the point. If someone wants to RP being a dirty slob, then let 'em rp being a dirty slob. If they don't, why should they be forced to?

Most folks don't even take the time to shower let alone actually change their clothes that often.

Now, granted if there were a funky odour in clothing that couldn't be removed it would mean more business for my character, but at the same time it would just mean a lot of people would avoid other people.

Smell some of your IC friends and neighbours the next time you see them. You'll be surprised who showers and who doesn't. Aside from that smell is also, or was I could be wrong now, a charisma issue.

You can set you smell with high enough charisma, if it isn't high enough to set the message then all you get is something like Hookie smells fine perhaps a bit musky.  One your charisma get's up you can customie the message so you smell like whatever cologne or shampoo you use.
i want to smell like jiffy markers? may i? :P

now… just what effects your charisma other then upping the stat itself? and what does your charisma really effect... other then Bruce being a PMSing little poo brain? ;)

I still think that the dirty clothes thing is a bit tedius and too much to deal with RP going on.
Charisma effects several things.

Not only does it allow you to get work from Bruce, it determines how well you can haggle in the market. Then there is also the smell issue. But on the rp side, those people with high charisma generally roleplay it out as well. They're the likable lovable people or something.

people who smell really bad should have a message that everyone sees when they enter a room, or you enter a room they're in.

Sewerboy enters from the north. A strong smell of shit fills the room.

No, really.

:)

makes sense to me.

I am agree.

I don't know if high charisma makes you likable or lovable, I think that high charisma only shows your influence on others, a person like Luc or Gerik with high charisma just has the intimidation thing going for them.  I mean everyone and there mother dislikes Luc and Gerik but they do have influence, I mean you might be a crime lord but if your not charismatic you ain't gonna get squat for respect in the hood!
I don't hate gerik…

But you don't have to be charismatic to be a crime lord...It would help, but you don't have to be.  Just smart and ruthless.

Charismatic and Intimaditing are two total opposites.

Someone with charisma has charm, they  can sway the way you think with their charim,

Someone like gerik would say do this or you'll die.

Not very charming is it ladies?

Intimidating through physical means would be yeah, but the look- the way the man acts the tone in his voice would all go to his charisma,  just cause your charisma is high doesn't mean your a fluffy little bunny that everyone likes when they meet. Yeah your right it's how a person can sway another with there charms, but who says they gotta be all sweet and nice?
Having influence and being charismatic are two different things. Charisma is attributed to one's manner, social interaction abilities and appearance. Influence is being able to sway people's decisions by ANY means necessary. Charisma can be a part of one's influence, but it doesn't have to be. Weilding power to get what one wants doesn't make one charismatic, but convincing a total stranger to act against their interests exclusively by virtue of one's appearance, tact and mannerisms is.
