can deckers get literally any kind of meaningful abilities. it's a stagnant archetype that can do maybe two useful things that, shocker, nobody gives a fuck about. it is honestly baffling that the "this archetype is lacking in features and not recommended" warning was taken off on the archetypes page. it feels like originally they were intended to do more, but nobody ever got around to actually implementing the features that would let them
i understand staff and coders and such are busy and have lives outside of the game of course but it's more than a little disheartening to see so many new things being added to the game and then deckers get like a new greeble to play with on the grid forums if they're lucky. it feels like you're just entirely opposed to deckers having any kind of influence over anything at all. literally all they can do are party tricks (that require three skills to do, ensuring they cant do anything else well either). i look forward to the same three people that have never played a decker in their lives coming in to tell me how im wrong about all of this or "just roll a solo lol" too

…when? all im seeing is a fix to prevent people from aborting program execution to get around accumulating grid heat
if you're referring to grid 4 itself, while it is a huge update, it's one that doesn't really give deckers any kind of meaningful abilities. they can do the same shit as always, just now they can also i guess turn off a camera for a few minutes or pull a list of no-value data from an employment terminal or something

You can take snap shots from cams, You can lock lev doors, you can Literally link a monitor to someone eyes without them knowing if you do it right. There are plenty of things techy deckers can do. I'm not going to sit here an name them all because thats against the ToS but those are just a few of the good ones and there are plenty more.

im frustrated because grid 4 has so much potential that's just entirely neglected. this is a great system and there's so much you COULD do with it, if the features were ever built out at all. when it launched there was this understanding that more was coming and deckers would have more things to do as grid 4 was integrated into more devices and systems, but that seemingly never even began to happen. everything you just listed doesn't really have much actual use outside of incredibly fringe edge-cases that will come up once maybe every two years

I am not sure what the answer here is but one thing I would like to see is making a node locked behind a skill over x amount of lines or tags so people need to use deckers to actually build them. I don't want it inaccessible, I just want it to require more if the node is long or has a lot of tags.
I would like to see more possible crimes and non crimes as well though, we're back to limited resources which becomes the issue. I'd like to see more stuff connected to the grid like meters, stores, etc where something could be done to affect stuff. For example, sending an alert that a store needs a delivery maybe to try to dispatch a target somewhere. Or, just to get stock in of something wanted. I see some interesting opportunities to be gained in breadth of what can be accessed so people can get creative with what they do with it. Like lowering the prices of a grid connected price board and such temporarily.

You say this like myself and others haven't hired deckers to do some pretty interesting things for the game. I really don't know what could make you happy at this point. Deckers got an update that let them interact quite a bit with various different things in the game, it's up to players to be clever with how they fit them into RP and plots. Which I have seen done quite a bit lately.

i obviously dont know the specifics of what you've hired deckers to do but in my experience, whenever ive played a decker and someone's approached me for a job, i've had to find ways to explain to them that you cannot do anything close to what they're asking with the grid without GM intervention

Just go through the motions and do what you might think would work with RP. Make notes about it and Xhelp when necessary. Gms will help you if it's allowed. They might do it, they my give your a GM thought telling you you need more tools or something else.

I think the problem is people aren't looking at decking as the supporting role that it is. You should be (imo) hiring deckers for the stuff that Rillem spoke about. Getting past locked doors, and whatnot that can get in the way of plots you're attempting. As for other things? Well they can interact with pretty much any system in the game that you can scan with. Leaving them to do some pretty sick shit, that has effected my own RP greatly. Deckers are not a frontline role though. You're not gonna be able to hack someone to death, and when you look at shit like cowboys in The Sprawl series they're exactly the same, a support role for shit like heists. Which given all the shit they can interact with now, they most definitely can. I think you might have a problem with thinking outside of the box as far as what your abilities can do to help people. I don't see other decker players/deckers IC complaining about their job not being able to do anything. In fact the opposite, and when I ask those deckers what they can do for me/my character, never once have I gotten "Nah we need GM intervention for that." so I'd say maybe start there, and see why you might be running into that wall. Because it's never a wall that I experience when it comes to using deckers.

Ivery much agree with Reganza. I've worked with a few deckers and while there are -some- limitations to what they can do, the toolsets they have just require workarounds. Planning and RP. I've yet to be told no by a decker. I've been asked to adjust my plans sure. And to my knowledge the deckers i've worked with have never had GM assistance on their tasks.

Yes, because that's the only data you can achieve. I can see why other deckers don't keep making posts about how there is nothing for them to do.
Seriously though, I can't get IC here and you know that. But it really does sound like the role just ain't fit for what you have in mind. Again, I have both seen and personally used data from the things you can scan. Deckers are WAAAAY more prevalent than they were when I first started back in 2015, and the shit they can do is unique to them. I understand that I am not PLAYING a decker, but I have RP'ed along side them, and I never get this sentiment from the other deckers.

i get the feeling i have an idea what data you're talking about and that feature has been in the game since at least grid 3. it's expensive, unreliable and time-consuming and while a nice feature, is like one thing. one thing deckers can do. there are other things they could potentially do, but these are things that are prohibitively expensive and also literally any other archetype can do so not really a "decker thing". in fact im not even sure the thing you're talking about is exclusive to deckers

Spend 12~ hours of programming time to make a program that pulls one (1) snapshot off a camera anywhere from 4 to 8 times. To do this, you need physical access to the camera at least once. You cannot do this in close to 80% of the game without requesting GM oversight first because you rightfully get your shit pushed in for trying to set it up. Is this useful? Potentially, in 0.1% of any situation ever. Can you think up a situation that can theoretically make use of this? Yes, you can. Will this situation actually happen? No, it won't.
Check whether someone's at any of the bars in Red a whopping total of 2-6 times for every 12+ hours of programming time you sink into it. Easily thwarted by people just not going to these bars, which the poopsock solos don't anyway. Can you think up a situation that can theoretically make use of this? Yes, you can. Will this situation actually happen? No, it won't.
SIC blackout an entire street in Red. Sounds cool, right? You permanently burn a terminal doing this, which there is a limited number of in the game and the stock is not refreshing. Can you think up a situation that can theoretically make use of this? Yes, you can. Will this situation actually happen? No, it won't.
Fuck with the mag-levs to potentially capture a guy. Sounds good, except 95% of the game has ready access to a vehicle and never touches the levs to begin with. Can you think up a situation that can theoretically make use of this? Yes, you can. Will this situation actually happen? No, it won't.
This is the entire archetype in a nutshell. This one statement:
Can you think up a situation that can theoretically make use of this? Yes, you can. Will this situation actually happen? No, it won't.
You can blame this on any number of player-based deficits, "oh you're not plotting hard enough :)", "oh you should just plan a little better and make more notes" - but doing this immediately outs you to me as someone who has never earnestly tried to make something work with a decker before.
Grid 4 is ocean-wide and puddle deep. In some ways, the siren allure of Actually Being Able To Do Things is worse than not being able to do anything at all. At the end of the day, the decker fantasy dies once you realize you can't really do half the shit you're imagining and that you've sunk every bit of UE you have into chasing a dream that isn't real and probably won't ever be real either.

Okay, solo jokes aside, I think you are hoping for something that just isn't going to happen. You've made a "please make deckers cooler" post a few times and honestly they already got a massive boost with 4. They can do tons of cool stuff.
If you want to be able to do more stuff with your existing character then get a skillsoft and slot some cool softs. With what money, I hear you asking? Hustle up. Mug people. Take out a loan. The money is there to take if you can.
If you are so fed up with deckers and the fact that they get shitstomped by combat characters I highly suggest a re-roll. Not even to make a solo, just make a new character that has something fun to do beyond decking. It clearly isn't fun for you as a player, separately from the game itself.
Make a thief. Make a corpie villain. Make a mixer villain. Make a medic with a heart of gold but a dark secret. Make a drunken brawling fool with a death wish. Make literally any character you want that isn't tied down to this current one dialed in with a specific skillset that you are so clearly unsatisfied with.
Make a new character and have fun with it! It's a game after all, you should be having fun!

Don't be surprised when people are dismissive of you. You already arguing at a point where you're dismissive of those who have different experiences than you. I've hired deckers, they weren't doing any of the things Ameliorative said. It was well beyond that, and what they did was useful as fuck.
Now if you're unwilling to let go of being a decker, because of the amount of time you've sunk into it. Then lets actually hear some suggestion you want. Because all I ever see is complaining about how they can't do anything, and the dev time gets put into everything else.
Even though one of the last time you posted one of these Slither literally said he spent most of his dev time the year Grid 4 was created on Grid 4 and he needs to focus on other stuff. We have pretty much one main dev as far as I understand, and they also work. So it might be awhile till we see more additions to Grid 4, and if that's upsetting, stop playing a decker. You don't seem happy with it.

Deckers, from what I've seen in a couple of spaces, are either feast or famine. Either you are stuck with, effectively, pulling bullshit data at best, or you're a digital god that gets to decide when everyone else gets to have fun. Deckers are never going to be as well-equipped and versatile as decker players want them to be, because the decker fantasy is literally "I am in your walls, and you don't know a damn thing about it."

There's obviously 'other things' but those other things can't be openly shared on here without breaking rules. One of them is extremely useful and gets used all the time by anyone who has access to it. It's also not something any but a few can actually reliably do, so I'm not of the opinion that it at all counts - it's basically a story/faction boon at this point. It's also boring as shit.
Is that more than some archetypes have? Yeah, I guess so. Is it something you're going to get to do as a new decker? Absolutely not. Probably not even as an established one, either.
The "deckers are useful" rhetoric is incidental at best and larping at worst, and there's a LOT of larping in this thread at the moment.

Decking is in a better place than rigging, full stop. However, the big thing with decking that I see as the problem is that deckers have no real reason and very few ways to go after one another. Defacing nodes? Can be undone with a keystroke, no decker even necessary. It's an annoyance more than anything. I still think loading a backup should be gated by decking skills to encourage people to hire for this, but as it stands it's just not worth the effort most of the time. Hacking their devices? A lot of effort required with very limited payoff. I think if people could hack eachother terms, steal scans, lift log data, or sabotage programs that'd go a long way to making deckers want to engage with one another either adversarially or cooperatively.
I also think scanning should be tied skill, and the higher skill the less noticeable you are doing it. Keep it available for laymen to do at base, but let novahot deckers be able to scan things in an area or on people without them realizing. Now, you might say, 'But that's too strong! How will I defend my progia and my term!?' Easy. You hire a decker to install ICE. Then the enemy decker has to crack it first, which is more overt, and now you have a conflict ecosystem.

those are all great suggestions. however, on the side of decker "combat", i also think that the threshold for daemon tracebacks needs to be brought way down, as currently i don't think it has literally ever happened because you need insane levels in a particular skill for a daemon to successfully trace the terminal executing something on a monitored device - a level that i dont think any decker has had or will have. this means this part of decking is just going entirely unused while it could be providing a whole lot of fun

Daemons being able to actually monitor nodes would also be a good start. Stealing scan signatures via a targeted attack outside of needing to beat the decker down for their term which they absolutely aren't carrying on them most of the time. Making the camera snapshot program give you an ongoing feed for a short time instead of a single, one-instance snapshot that is almost never useful. Cause some decker attacks to physically destroy hardware so people aren't just sitting on six quickterms and pushing the items over rarity so that nobody else can buy them. Make progia texting leave a somewhat accessible but obfuscated trail somewhere if someone can get a scan on one of them. Make recycling chutes scannable so that baby deckers can sell SIC credit packages on the cheap as an early hustle.
None of these things are ever going to happen, though.

I stopped wading through most of the responses to this thread because honestly most of them are not very constructive or helpful. OP is trying to point out that the games decker system falls flat, and, I say this with all due respect to the people who coded the grid system, it just does. I've played a decker in other games and I just would never waste my time doing so on Sindome.
"Just reroll into our power structure" I would even say is a borderline troll response.

Not to double post, but after re-reading a few responses, I think an interesting element to this thread, which I agree is probably a complaint post (but the complaint forums don't alert you in game) , is that the responses seem to accidentally support Baguettes broader complaint in that Sindome is too combat-centric. I think it is and I think that that is ok because that is just a key element of cyberpunk, but that is not to say that decking should feel unrewarding. One of the recurring solutions is essentially "Don't play that, play something that interfaces better with the existing power structure" and I feel like that is…well...exactly the complaint!
I don't even think deckers need remotely comparable combat power, they just need comparable agency. A solo's skill investment allows them to proactively create problems, be it attacking someone, protecting someone, intimidating someone, collecting bounties, whatever violent scenario you can imagine. A thief can steal, a fixer can trade and build networks. A decker shouldn't have to wait for the planets to align so that their 12-hour camera script becomes relevant.

Most archetypes only really grant access to a few commands - usually less than half a dozen, if that at all.
It just so happens that combat archetypes have access to the most important command of all: the one that lets you permanently remove people from the game, or the one that stops someone else from doing this to you.
For as long as I've ever played it, every archetype has been a second-class citizen compared to the solo. The entire game orients around someone pushing the kill button on someone else. That's what it all boils down to.

Also as an aside (sorry for the double post): I agree completely that Rigging is in an absolutely abominable state, arguably worse than decking is by orders of magnitude. It is basically wasted UE past a very early threshold because you just can't do anything with it. At all. And if you try, the parts are prohibitively expensive and often barely work at all.
I think it'd be kinder to just not have these skills available at all rather than turning them into what Munitions used to be and leading people on into pretending that they actually do anything.

I've made some QoL improvements to the Grid over the past 14 months or so, since releasing Grid 4 in August of 2025. However, I was clear from the start that I was moving away from making further big changes for several reasons:
1. need to give changes time to percolate
2. to give attention to the rest of the game
Threads like this kinda just piss me off. You seem unhappy that you aren't able to do more. Okay, I can understand that. At the same time, you've misrepresented what is possible, as many people in this thread have pointed out. You can actually do quite a lot as a decker. A lot of it isn't permanent which is purposeful for all the reasons I've laid out in other posts.
I mean, deckers can:
- mark fines from the WJF as paid
- fuck with the mag levs
- play TV shows on a specific channel
- make programs
- hack nodes
- hack daemons
- hack security cameras
- slice people into the ACL for nodes
- slice people into the guest list for non player run businesses/mag levs
- turn off security cameras
- get paydata from employment terms
- identify if someone is in an area by their sic
- blank out the SIC id on a grid account
- hack into many different objects in game including other decks and get pay data
- create deadmans switch type setups
- create daemons to monitor grid/security gear/nodes
- search node content in a way non deckers cant
And they can do all of this for free, excluding the cost of their deck.
Saying they can't do literally anything is silly, wrong, and counter productive. And your frustration that you can't do more and the way you've expressed it isn't making me want to put more of my time into making the Grid better.

I've never played a decker myself but i've been around plenty and have interacted with them alot, It is definetly not true to say they haven't received major updates. Grid 4 has made alotta meaningful changes to deckers that should be appreciated and valued. Again, I don't say this as a decker but rather someone who's seen grid three and roleplayed closely with those who've used both grid versions so I don't know it in depth.
I think OP's frustration or the idea they have in their head, more specifically, might come from deckers having more abilities in combat or useful utilities where it may be useful in combat or such. In most cyberpunk games and media, deckers have always had some sort of utility in combat even if they arent specialized towards it. Wether that's temporarily quick hacking an assailant's chrome to stun them and they can escape, or other flashy cool things.
Probably alot of their experience and frustration comes from going up against combat classes and losing, since sindome is a PVP game that will always be the central theme though. Maybe a better line of thought would be introducing more ways in which deckers could be utilized in combat like the cool cyberpunky quick hacks and net runner abilities they're known for?
I do think that as far as utilities outside combat, deckers seem to be able to do ALOT of things already, much more than they used to be and that shoudn't be taken for granted. I've also seen some deckers be paid out tens of thousands for short term works, so it's not always just ability but the person themselves and how they market it too.

I have found that their is a lot of meaningful things you can do with Decker abilities. In my experience, there has been a lot of thumbs ups where Decker abilities have come into play.
Limit your expectations to what the game offers when you play a Decker, and get creative. If you come in here with the attitude of 'I cant be like a Sprawl or a Cyberpunk 2077 runner, so i'm useless!!!' Then you just make SinDome deckers looks bad.

The fact of the matter is, Deckers aren't built to be like Net Runner V from Cyberpunk 2077 in my experience. You arent gonna run around frying chrome and being an overpowered bad ass.
That doesn't seem to be the point.
The point seems more like being an ultra sneaky DATA MINING -MACHINE- With a few extra tricks. It gives more of the vibe of a less violent Aiden Pierce from Watchdogs.
There's so much you can do with it, you just have to think a little more three dimensionally with how to use what we got.
I have it on good authority that it's -pretty- bad ass. I look forward to more updates in the future, but what we have is already pretty fun.

You're right that I was quite frustrated when I first made the thread, and should probably have taken some time to cool off first, so I apologize for that. However, while I do appreciate all the new things deckers are able to do, it's like people have said earlier in the thread. Grid 4 is ocean wide and puddle deep. You have all these theoretically really cool things you can do, but in practice opportunities to use them almost never come up.
You can hack cameras. Cool. I am yet to encounter any scenario where anyone cares about that, because they can just throw on a poncho and nobody's the wiser.
You can pull data from employment terminals. Awesome. On paper, this is a really exciting and cool idea. But when you actually go out to do that, you have to get past physical security (guards, locked doors, potentially retina scanners, who knows what else), and then when you actually manage to hack the thing the only 'paydata' you can pull off it is not anywhere close to worth the effort in any way. You can piece it together yourself by looking at people's SIC tags and the publicly-accessible job board, and I'm also yet to see any scenario where anyone cares how much a certain person is getting paid.
You can hack other decks, and these do actually have somewhat useable data on them. But to actually get a scan on a deck in the first place, you need to either manage to get your hands on someone's deck by lifting it off their person, scanning it, and planting it back on them (they are guaranteed to notice this unless you manage to pull off some real Ocean's 11 bullshit, which almost makes it not worth it) or getting a backtrace on them with a daemon (the threshold for doing this is far too high and I don't think anyone in the game has ever had a daemon successfully backtrace anything, meaning the only way anyone gets a terminal scan is through Grid Heat thresholds).
The rest of what you've listed, while still cool and things I'm grateful for, don't really have too much utility, especially node stuff that can be reverted in a matter of seconds. And when they *do* have utility in theory, the situations where they would actually be of any use functionally do not happen.
That is my main problem with decking as it currently exists. There is so many THEORETICALLY awesome things you can pull off, but when you actually try to put them into practice it just falls flat on its face. I understand and appreciate that a lot of time and work went into developing Grid 4, but I really strongly feel that things need to be at least reworked in some way if you want playing a decker to feel any kind of rewarding.

Will walk through these a bit with my commentary in brackets. I'm giving honest feedback here and not trying to sound or be hostile, so please bear with me.
- mark fines from the WJF as paid (like 3 people in the whole game can do this and there are massive protracted consequences for repeatedly doing it - it is inaccessible to most people entirely)
- fuck with the mag levs (at best you can coax a month of free lev pass for someone out of this but again, vehicles are abundant these days and almost everybody has even a cheap ride after a month or two)
- play TV shows on a specific channel (prohibitively expensive in terms of heat costs and the channel is not regularly watched by anyone if at all ever)
- make programs (yeah you kind of need to be able to in order to do anything…?)
- hack nodes (no lasting damage can be done to nodes because people can simply... revise them)
- hack daemons (barely. you can screw around with device daemons for like, mag-lev turnstiles and gridphones
- hack security cameras (if by hack you mean retrieve ONE image from them at the cost of several hours of compiling effectively)
- slice people into the ACL for nodes (this is necessary to do anything to nodes at all)
- slice people into the guest list for non player run businesses/mag levs (you can barely do this for the mag levs and you will have NPCs animated to punch you in the mouth if you try to do this anywhere else, so it's essentially not a thing outside of maglevs)
- turn off security cameras (this would be more useful if people did not have things wired into their head that they can immediately use to detect and reverse this with)
- get paydata from employment terms (what you get almost never useful for anything and tantamount to public knowledge lots of the time, requires you to have physical access to the term which for many cases, requires some variant of The World Is Ending in order to get access to)
- identify if someone is in an area by their sic (one of the few actually useful things it can do, but has had a knock on effect of deterring the solo crowd from hanging out anywhere it can reasonably reach)
- blank out the SIC id on a grid account (intrinsically needed to do anything major with the grid at all. this is like advertising that solos can "hold a gun" as one of their features?)
- hack into many different objects in game including other decks and get pay data (most of them aren't worth the time of day to consider for a whole slew of reasons, which is part of the problem)
- create deadmans switch type setups (not really that useful but pretty cool if someone ever does make use of it)
- create daemons to monitor grid/security gear/nodes (you can't make daemons for nodes unless this is a new development?)
- search node content in a way non deckers cant (there is really not that much useful on the grid to warrant this being a major thing and trust me i've tried EXTENSIVELY to make this work)
There's a lot of stuff but it just doesn't do that much as a cohesive package. It's a grab bag full of utility that sounds cool and sounds useful until you try to actively put it into practice, then you start getting punched in the face by the caveats and the pitfalls and the generally crippling inability to do anything serious with it... versus a Combat Guy who can pick up a pipe wrench and beat someone to death with it. Guess who gets more biz?

Yeah, you've never been able to monitor nodes with daemons, and I'm pretty sure that's something decker players have been asking for for a while. Was it intended and just never implemented?
