I know there are continuing concerns about bloat, and often I see rooms with 20, 30, or even 50 or more photos.
I don't know how much it would reduce bloat, but what about a 'photo album' item that permanently incorporates a photo into the album? Even though the photo data would still be stored in the database, we'd now have one item instead of 50.

Permanent…
So the only thing I'll point out here is that you can actually observe individual elements on photos. I imagine the syntax would get out of hand if you couldn't pull the photo free to inspect it more closely.
Imagine having to type "look at gun on 3rd photo of 2nd page in album"

I was imagining one per page, and a 'turn page' command like exists in books, so it would be 'look at gun on album', where the album has been turned to whatever page.

That would feel even more clunky and obnoxious to me, honestly.
I do like the idea. It's certainly better than a briefcase full of photos. Just needs to be implemented well.

I've been wanting to suggest photo albums for a while. I was thinking of them as a container that holds only photographs. It would be like a plastic sleeve you could put photos in and take them out. And that it would be nice if you could label the photo album, so you could sort your pictures that way and not have to hang them on a wall.

The reason I proposed making them permanent is to reduce the number of items in the database – though I don't really know if that helps.

Let's let developers worry about bloat.
If there's a way an album would enhance RP, it's a good @idea.

By label, I mean you would only label the photo album. Like… "Personal photographs" or "Notorious Criminals" or what have you.

Two thoughts.
1) Cameras are already photo albums.
2) Let pictures get uploaded onto the grid, boom there is your album.

Oh ho ho… and a way for deckers to collect paydata as well if your shit isn't locked down tight...

Cameras aren't really albums because you have to take the photo yourself. If there was a way to upload photos into a device like a camera, I think that would be basically ideal – it would store them like a camera and then you could print.
Actually, maybe that's the best (and easiest to code) solution -- just creating an object that is like a camera, but instead of taking photos it scans existing photos. It can print those photos out if you need to look at details.
Call it the NitoKodak Digital Album or something.

Photos on the grid would be awesome, but I think you'd have the 'preserving detail' issue. You also have the issue about not being able to lock grid notes or otherwise have access control.

Briefcases already serve this purpose, to a good degree.

I'm in favor of letting the grid host photos, but, I'm not really in favor of making grid-only enhancements like this. Not everyone uses the grid, for both IC and OOC reasons.
Maybe if the in-MOO term object could be used to view an album of photos which are on the grid. A digital rather than print album does make sense, because the cameras are already digital. But I'd like an in-MOO album object which can be passed around and looked at.

I think the ability to transfer photos via the Grid would be great for paydata exchanges and veracity purposes, but I also feel like it would undermine and stifle a lot of other RP surrounding photos.

A common interface for E-Note E-Memory Modules that fit in PhotoPlus Cameras, E-notes, and ALL Grid Terminals (yes, even public ones) that allowed the import/export of photos, notes, nodes, etc is what is really needed. Along with a NitoKodak Scanner to upload hardcopies to e-memory modules.
I think any half-measures will just delay the much-needed paydata migration and empowerment of Grid 3.0.

There are various IC ways for people to store photographs, and just because people don't use them don't mean they don't exist.
