Portable Targets/ Shooting Range

Just an idea I had, specifically for those who are unable to acquire firearms in a legal manner and therefore cannot utilize the legal places for practice.

Some method of portable target, shooting range or the ability to make a shooting range of sorts from things that already exist (such as a six-pack of cans or bottles). Could be something marketed, could be something crafted, could be just something you could do with a bottle placed in a room or something.

This wouldn't calculate points or anything, but might be a fun way like a dart board to test skill with a firearm, and would help those who are pursuing firearms illegally still RP practicing and learning the skill in a manner that isn't just handwaving.

Let me know what you think

I like this idea. I wonder if new robot-code can be leveraged to create targets easily.
Have had this same thought and couldn't imagine it not being a thing! Need a way to test your firearm accuracy that isn't on a person or sewer rat.
Airsoft guns for sparring. But a shooting range that can be set up would be nice.
Also, being able to try and shoot at thrown objects in mid air!

I think about this a lot, OOC -and- IC. While I would love the entertainment it would provide, I've also come to realize that with something like this it might destroy all the awesome RP'ing that comes from firearms being illegal to most of the population.

There's so much mystery, guesswork, and preparation, and RP involved because you don't have the chances you would have in a city where these things were legal. The easy out of an underground shooting range could potentially just make it another combat mechanic, maybe?

I'm not sure how a private or public underground shooting range in the mix would impact the illegality, or consequences, or need to be subtle with your illegal firearms.

Could you explain a bit more @Grig?

I think Grig is saying that to learn to use one you have to shoot people or other live stuff.

There are actually a few spots ic where you could try something like this. It would be dicey but you could give it a shot. It could maybe even be semi-sanctioned if you went about it in the right way.

In the interest of rp though, why not put a gun in a new players hand and have them take a crack at it live? Or pay someone to be your dummy? Those could be some really fun scenes. One of the fun things about SD is the finding out. Who knows, that trainee shooter could be better than they think. That first hit could set them up for a bad-ass journey of solo-dome.

There's a lot of work to get there, because there isn't really code for shooting inanimate objects at all, but we could make it possible to 'craft' a target from a bottled drink by having you empty it and sit it up on something in the room. The vast majority of code time would be spent making it possible to shoot inanimate objects at all - its very specific to player objects (PCs, NPCs, critters, robots) right now.
Gotcha! Just an idea I had, and would be cool in any fashion it works with code, doesn't need to be bottles for instance.
Well, you see its any inanimate object, so my best current advice for mixers is go rat, cat or dog hunting. :)
Can do. You say robots are codedly able to be shot like that which might also allow the original idea I had in regards to this one....time to test some things
Oh, yes, robot cat hunting is also viable, but might be costly in terms of chyen or blood. :-D

Stay tuned for other bots ...

Just a thought - could robot carcasses (for lack of better terms) be able to be left behind as a static item even when they stopped working? Would allow for set up of a shooting range without having to worry about the issues with inanimate vs animate objects. The robots would no longer work as intended, but codedly they could work as a target/janky practice dummy.
I can't comment on how robot's work codily when they can no longer remain functional. You'll have to find out ICly.
Perf, will test things. Think your various explanations of how the code for this works has given me an idea on how to accomplish this. Thanks!
People, people, people.

Really?

This is the reason we have immies.

But you can't have gun training montage scenes with a militia with immies as targets! Well you can but...

I want to be able to shoot into the air, or otherwise "at nothing," just popping rounds off.
^ What beandip said.

I can already imagine slough of applications outside of just fucking around.

First thing I wanted to do with a gun when I got it was shoot it in the air. Would be a great way to grab a room's attention and is also just fun as hell.

Plus the WJF/corpies could get their first desk pops.

Just to touch briefly on this thread. I think to beandip and a number of others are on point, the preferred implementation imho would be a trifecta with the shoot verb.

1. shoot here with

You fire the gun into the air like an asshole. Maybe some NPC gets hit by falling bullet a room or two away in the mayhem. Statistically uncommon but say you have a gang of 10 San Mayan Caballeros doing it? Likely.

2. shoot with

Ebola cola and lager objects become defacto shooting targets that are trashed after a successful hit. Since these items are available in abundance - it's an easy and acquirable shooting range. Why reinvent the classic?
