Progia-11

I did some searching throughout the posts and couldnt find anything like this, so here it is:
A new progia, this one would have all of todays features and than a few that would be inventive. Like why dont we have ringtones? I dont mean like songs or anything but isntead of a *breeeeep* you would hear a bell, or something you wanted. And than you could have a camera, and there would be a docking station or something to print out pictures of things, like bodies for identification or just take a picture of that sweet girl/guy you love ooh so much. And when you are finished with that you could take it home, stick it on the docking station, print it out and you have a picture of whatever you want. Not only would that make those nito cameras useless, but it would just seem a lot more real to me in the day and age it is IC.
Another cool feature would be not only caller I.D. but a missed calls list, that way if you walk away form your phone for a second and come back you can look and say, "Damnit, that fuckin' loan shark called again, when is he gonna leave me alone?" And it wouldnt say like, "Fred" or "George" under the missed call, it would give the return number. And if you want to call them back you would just hit 'call 1 from missed' or something to that effect. A way to customize the way your phone looks, like covers would be cool, but not a necessity.
Good idea, but you didn't look far enough back to see if it had been discussed previously, a couple of times.

(that 'Search' function at the top is pretty helpful) ;)

That said, I still think they're great ideas for improvement (see also: 'proper' implementation of the videophone I can't remember the name of atm and may actually be implemented and I just haven't seen one).

I don't know that it's necessary to render objects already in-game useless (camera phones wouldn't wipe out the need/use for funcams, phones are more expensive and require docking stations (more expense) and etc).

And my very mixed opinion on personalising phones (because this is the way I do things, harp on about something that was a mere afterthought):
1: Could be an ingame job for a character, kinda a tailor type dealie, might be good… also very exploitable for that character who obviously would have contact details for people and yadayada...

2: Style over substance of course, having a sleek black phone with glowing red lights might just be your thing, makes you stand out...

3: ...but who really wants to stand out in RED, realistically speaking? You die, your phone gets picked up by someone else, do you really want them to know easily/instantly whose phone it is they've just scavenged?

...meanwhile, I'm a girl who has the world's most subtle beep for incoming calls and text messages, so something other than *breeeeep* would be nice. It'd just be more expensive and require getting new numbers because phones in Withmore don't have sim cards ;)

*endbabble*

I've allways been a fan of hard line phones in apartment/cube hotel rooms.
I'm very fond of the idea of something along the lines of.. @ring_tone progia is "Your progia-11 gridphone starts to emit a loud shrieking sound similar to a pig being slaughtered."
@oring_tone progia is "%N's progia-11 gridphone starts to emit a loud shrieking sound similar to a pig being slaughtered."

Or if you want a more realistic example..

@ring_tone progia is "Your Progia-11 gridphone starts playing the latest song from smashing babies."

Or something like that, eh?

First of all I tried the search function for progia, ringtone, and a few others. So it might be that I didnt enter in the right words.

Second of all I like that idea Nemisis, I would like to be able to se it to a dying sheep, or whatever I want.  And as for camera phones getting rid of those nito's, the way I see it camera phones would generally be cheap, they wouldnt cost a bundle to buy, and the docking station would just be something like a printer, plug it in and select which pics you want printed and you're done.

I like the idea of having land line phones in cubes, but if you are only gonna stay there one night than what's the use? Now for like Westinghaus, or other apartments that are more permanent, I could see a line in there which you can use. But if you're gonna put them in the New Rose and Habitat-X, than make it so you can at least get room service.

What about a vibrate feature so that only you know when a call comes in? I mean I hate it when I'm trying to be stealthy and some jackass decides to call my phone. :o
Yeah, '@set_progia to vibrate', and than only you feel it. Never thought of that, good idea.

Hard lines are typically secure lines and can keep you annoynomous. Good for people who live outside the box, if you will.

Don't get me wrong.  Alot of this stuff sounds pretty cool and would probably be neat were it implemented..

But I'm really hoping to see a little bit more Matrix stuff and maybe drugs OD scripts before something like a new phone is worked on.  :\

And as for 'hard-line' phones, I guess technically we don't have them, however, there are the Progia VR9000 Telepresence Units.

They're fun for when raging enemies want to meet "face-to-face," though I imagine them being pretty big.  They have to be 'installed' in order to be used.

Salvatore:  When you're searching with the search feature, there is an option box that lets you select between searching the topic's title, the body of the topic (posts) or both.  By default it's set to just the title, so you have to select both, or just topic body, or you wont find a lot of stuff.

Chaos: I agree, the matrix and drug OD scripts and the like are more important then a new progia, but it's still fun to toss around ideas like this.

I know a vibrate function has been mentioned before.  It would definitely be sweet.  As for camera phones replacing Nito-Kodak fun cams, uhh.. why the hell wouldn't they?  Look at poloroid, isn't it going out of buisness because of digital cameras and camera phones?

Fun cams are like toys for kids, if you're really talking about a civilization with high technology, then paper and printed goods are going to be almost non-existent, except as backups for digital copies.

Give the camera phone the ability to send a picture to another phone, that makes more sense then a docking station.  And instead of a docking station, have it hook up to an e-note or NLM docupad.

This way if you need to show someone a picture of the chummer you just creased, you just show them on your phone, or send the picture to there phone.

I understand why things are the way they are on the MOO now, because of the code that goes into things, and such, but it seems like kids today; living in the inner city equivelent of RED, have more technology than there equivelents on RED almost a hundred years later.

If you wanna go and make grid phones, uber PDA of Death +10…Please...PLEASE...integrate it with the grid. With the amount of information that is "supposedly" dispersed via the grid; deckers tend to see none of it. Not that there are any...but maybe...someday...a million years from now, someone will figure it all out.

"Yeah, I'm the one that hacked your phone. Your grrl scans alot hotter then that meatpuppet you've been with, and I'm sure she'll pay better then you can. Especially, after I explain how you gave her herpes simplex sixty. But you haven't seen the test results from the clinic, have you?"

This thing would definetly have to cost good money too, in the world of super high tech bullshit. Everything is a status symbol.

… Progia Grid Phone ... the commercial says, "Take the grid with you"... yet it only makes calls and has a redial button... not even an address book.

*shakes head*

and yes, it would be abso-freakin-lootly sweet if they could be hacked from the grid. or could be used to surf the grid.

speaking of which... it would be nice just to be able to access the grid...

Progress is incredibly slow at Sindome. There's no point to play if you're not relatively happy with the way things are now cuz I'm going to guess they're going to stay this way for a long, long time.

Not to sound cynical :P

ok, ok. i'll stop :p

Even with a few things being broke, it doesnt make it a bad place. Still some excellent rp. better than i've had in a long time.

Not totally true… unfortunately most of the staff is part time, and the player base, in all honesty, is not at a size that could handle a matrix. (Think about it, half the players would almost always be on the matrix... that cuts RP in half.)

I don't know if we'll ever see a full Sim-type matrix, we'll have something though.

Well, with a fully intricate matrix…erm...well, I mean...if data flowed more freely from even the most sublle of actions: everyone would be on the matrix.

This probably belongs somewhere else but...

I always viewed A fully sim-type matrix as a very raw way to interface with the grid/city/world, messing with files/nodes/databases would be raw pay data (which would look much prettier on the graphical grid) to capture the flood of information accesible via the matrix....sure, there could be a pretty simstim aspect but that'd be reserved for the pretty plastic people in there ivory towers and bleeding edge cowboys...the key would have to rely on making the matrix connect to the in-game world with both input and output.

That decker can find out where you are...and make those ad-blimps above you love letters.

(Ooo I totally lost my direction...)

In game now.
You rock dude.
Haha…having a matrix wouldn't cut RP in half...it'd change the shape of existing RP.

It might cut fights in half :P Silliness.

That's why we must all recruit more friends to play SD!

With things like the sidekick and the helio, i find it hard to believe that anything resembling the cellphone of today will even exist.  and a LAN line in a cube or hotel? forget about it.  It'll all be wireless unless your company installs their own hardline LAN that has limited access from the grid.

Someday my friends...some...day.

Wow. The words and the reasoning behind them scares me.

"We don't have enough players. I'm going to completely ignore the fact that adding substantial content that has been requested for YEARS and is very often  considered vital to the CP universe by most to the game JUST MIGHT create more attraction for Sindome and keep people from just playing That Other MOO."

This is like saying we shouldn't have allowed players into the Badlands, because half the players would be in the Badlands and therefore cut RP in half.

I don't mind a lack of a matrix for good reasons, but after 4.6 years I've still never heard a valid reason, except for maybe 'we don't have the admin pool big enough to handle working on the matrix.' That I'll accept, but at least own up to it. I'm sick of the bullshit excuses.

WTF! Stonemonk? Is that really you? *prod*

Si!
*Chucks Boulders*
The matrix is not an easy task.  The amount of systems we have in place that would need to be incorperated into the matrix, and the amount of code that would need to be written is substantial.

I'm not saying having the matrix wouldn't be awesome.  I'm not saying we shouldn't work on it.  I'm just saying that there are things we can code or plots we can work on, that would make the game better and funnier faster.

The matrix is a project that a coder or group of coders would have to focus on until it was done.  Otherwise, half the code would get done.  It would sit for three years, someone else would try to finish it.. but have to spend the same amount of time it took to write the original code trying to figure out the existing code, before they could figure out what was left to code.. etc.. etc..

The progia VR9000s are meant to be the 'phone booth' of the era.

They surpass a video phone (way too close to present day tech) and they require sufficent hardline bandwidth to send the VR signal.

Hard line audio phone service in every establishment makes zero sense. Hell, in 2007, it barely makes sense. I haven't had a hardline since 1999!

And grid integration:
Every call made travels over the grid. As you talk, a log is made that is available to grid hackers. There are some minor peices missing on the web side to let grid hackers actually see this data, but its ready to be mined when we get there. And no, the log isn't kept forever. It expires in an IC fashion.

One day, I'll fix the grid. Need to get control of my health first.

You just worry about that for now Johnny man.  The grid can wait.
