Rename Nodes
We have node IDs now!

With Grid 4, it seems you also get a 'node ID' when you view a node. With this in mind, why not let people rename nodes they own? I'm assuming the node ID (rather than the node name) is the primary key in the node database, so it seems like a feature worth having.
Any arguments against this?

I can see a few problems, like, someone renaming a node over and over and that breaking links to it, or making it confusing in some situations.

However, the benefits might outweigh the problems?

It's hard to remember nodes enough when you don't remember which letters are capitalized. Doing nodes by node ID would make it impossible to remember or navigate nodes easily.
The suggestion wasn't needing to use node ids, it was being able to rename a node. You'd still access it via the node name, but the node name would be something that someone could change.

So for example:

Node Name: MyNode
Renamed to: MyNode2

Node is now: MyNode2
'MyNode' is now free for someone else to use.

Though making it possible to load a node by ID would also be a possible addition, I suppose.

Hmm, that might mess with people linking to nodes. Especially all the people who put time into making Grid directories…

Broken links are annoying even on the IRL internet.

However, maybe someone who renames a node could ask the creators of a grid directory to update it...

Or, quite simply, if you rename your node and don't want links to it to be broken, you can just create a new node with that name that links to the new one.

Also, some of the "problems" that've been outlined could also be deliberate choices. Like a somewhat "underground" node cycling their node name periodically to keep prying eyes away.
