Stealthy "use"

I think there should be a stealthy version of "use" that gets an item into your inventory without everyone seeing it

eg: three terra agents walk into the drome bar, and <player> is sitting at a booth in the back, he slips his hand into his trenchcoat and slowly slides his zmi .357 out of his holster holding it at the ready, but still out of sight, under his coat, or behind his back, or under the table, or whatever.

or

<player> picks <other player>'s pocket while he is talking to two other guys, suddenly one of his friends looks at <player> so she slips the wallet into her trenchcoat pocket while feigning a itch/yawn/streach.

it could be made so that if someone is exceptionally perceptive they would see the action, and others would be oblivious.  and the less stealth you have the less likey you will fool anyone.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I suggested this before and it was shot down.  But now that someone else has, I'm sure they'll get on it right away.  Or, even better, we could try to convince Johnny that it was his idea….:bugeyed:
Yeah I think this was brought up before…now what term was being thrown around..oh yeah "palming" an object.  But there's alot of problems with it, yeah it would work with a wallet, maybe even a credchip or or phone, but ya know there's gonna be someone who tries to do a palm after doing a random steal from <insert name here> and pulls off a cricket bat.
random steal?  didn't know there was such a thing, but if there is shouldn't there be limits on it?  I mean you would have to have one awesome thief, and one idioit of a target for a bat, rifle, shotgun, guitar, anything big, to be stolen…

or maybe a way to secure these things to your person  llike trenchcoat pockets, or a harness/holster for bats rifles shotguns etc.

sledgehammer-sheaths.

w00t.

hell yeah….

a sheath directed at like pistol grip shotguns,  but able to hold hockey sticks, sledgehammers, bats, tire irons.... whatever.   wouldn't be hard to code I wouldn't think.

Yes, it has been brought up before. If people would use the search feature we might avoid these redundant topics.

Yes, it's easy to code. No, I doubt it will be implemented because it's too easily abused. People will palm their sniper rifles and shotguns and paragliders and poof, they disapear into their bottomless pockets. Some limitations have to be coded because people won't stick to realistic which is a major time sink, and easier to avoid unless there's a really good reason for having it. We've survived this far without it…

I suggested the idea when I modded stealing when I first started as a coder. That was (I think) Febuary of 2002... about a year before Hirononbu's post. But Hirononbu was the first to suggest the idea outside of the admin realm, so he get's the boobie prize (which, strangely enough, isn't boobies).

How come I never hear anyone suggest that we should limit the number of items a person could hold in their inventory based upon size, weight, and their strength and endurance? That would be realistic, and lord knows people abuse the fuck out of that.

There are limits on the (random) steal code. Larger things are much harder to steal.

If you want a holster for your hocky stick, RP it. Were trying to prioritize what get's worked on and holsters for non-guns are not exactly high on the list, however cool they might look.

-Kevlar

Hey I've never been a fan of the endless pocket syndrome and have posted accordingly in the past. Everything my character has on her has some explanation of how the hell it's there. If she's carrying something as large as a sledgehammer, it's in her hands, same with any melee weapon save for batons cause they collapse. Anything else can be carried in a pocket most of the time.

(Edited by allandra at 10:13 am on Nov. 25, 2003)

what is the command for hiding items on your person?  and since damus's question was never answered in the other post,  is it disguise?

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't your inventory already limited by weight?  like you can't pick up corpses if they are too heavy for you, and there is that "weight of your belongings is:"  thing on your inventory.  but yeah you should work on that too, I never carry more than I realistically think I could, and never stash anything big, unless I think I could stick it under my trenchcoat or something.

If you want a holster for your hocky stick, RP it.

I understand priorities and all, but who't gonna rp not stealing big shit from me then?   maybe some, but what was that you were saying about abuse….
in any event I'll live with it I guess..
:shrugs

Everything my character has on her has some explanation of how the hell it's there.

Now if only everyone else could say the same… (I won't name names. You know who you are).

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't your inventory already limited by weight?

Nope. Corpses are special cased. And no one has ever been carrying 2 machettes, 2 pistols, 3 clips, a cricket bat, a set of women's clothing, their own clothes, cigarettes, a lighter, an e-note, an e-print, their half-drunk vodka shot from last night,  9 Ex-d7's,  an extendable baton, a shroud, 2 rolexes, a stilletto, a cell phone, a wallet, a can of spraypaint, a can of aerosol solvent,  a sheathed katana, a Nito-Kodak FunCam, a pair of dice, 1,300 chyen, an Xo3 bodysuit AND helmet (which pocket does that fit in exactly?), and gotten the message "That's too heavy. Try dropping something first." because there are no limitations.

I understand priorities and all, but who't gonna rp not stealing big shit from me then?

Anyone who tries. They'll fail, because as I mentioned in my prior post big things are harder to steal, and either you'll notice, which will generate RP, or you won't, in which case nothing happened (except for the failed aptempt). But they won't succeed unless your perception is REAL low and their thievery skill is REAL high, in which case that's pretty realistic.

-Kevlar

This one time I had a Kevlar in my inventory.

w00t.

But they won't succeed unless your perception is REAL low and their thievery skill is REAL high

good, that's all I hoped for…...

well it fuckin happened, twas a cold day outside so I probibaly would have not only had my coat buttoned, but would have had it hugged around me tightly (my descrip even has it buttoned around me) and I was wearing a trench, and got ganked of a large item, and it wasn't on a random grab, the person knew I had it and so they took it. and it wasn't because my perception wasn't up to par, cause it's not superhuman, but it's decent. it was because this person has decent stats (yeah I saw them for a split second afterword due to a glitch, but I'm not gonna sink to playing to the code, and I couldn't catch them ICly. so don't worry you got away with it scott free you second rate RP'er)

bad frickin form, in real life this would have been impossible short of ripping my jacket off of my charcter and pulling the item out of my hands. I suspected it would happen, so I just had to quote on it when it did.

:bollox:

:knob:

:wanker:

and finally
:twink:

There's a bug in the steal code where under certian circumstances you tried to steal some specific (like a wallet, which would be perfectly fine RP in the situtation your describing) you end up getting something else entirely (like a large bulky item).

So perhaps you could appologize for making such rash assumptions about the RP, and instead bitch at us for not fixing the steal code, yeah?

-Kevlar

Yeah, I type 'steal wallet from bob' and I get a rolex.. I mean.. I'm not gunna complain.. but..
ok, I was pissed at the time, and still am,

IF this was the case,(big if) then I apoligize to the person who did it…

:shakes a finger at the collective admin "bad coders" he says.

but still doesn't change the fact that I lost out, bigtime, through no fault of my own

ho-hum...

Gimmie a B!

Gimmie an E!

Gimmie a T!

Gimmie an A!

What's that spell?

</sarcasam>

I'm sorry, I'll stop. I appologize you lost something as the result of a bug. I'll fix the code tonight, and it will never happen again, ok?

-Kevlar

stop your whining i mean really. You lost material things boohoo.. i lost my life as a result of buggy code. I didn't bitch about it on the boards and make a scene i politely asked the admin about it thru private channels and worked out the situation. .. wich ened up in tough lovin from the admin as i was not reimbursed for my life..  but kevlar's right we're BETA testers. its not all perfect yet. … ok i'm done.

Hey my siggy's back! yay!

Oooo, ahhhh.  Sarcasm tags.  Why didn't I think of that?
True to my word, it's done.

Let me know if you still have issues with people stealing large bulky items from you with no consideration for your description and I'll throw them in the cell faster than you can say 'Damnit, Keblar!'.

-Kevlar

:looks down at his posts

"ooh, 200… woo hoo"

freak you tool I'm done whining, but what I lost cost about the price of 20 clones, that's 20 clones not 1 clone and 19 updates.

anyway

200.. woo hoo it's a bicentennial of whining, complaining, and talking shit.

as well as of expressing my opinion, giving Ideas, and just talking about the game I've come to like more than any other high- tech, fancy graphic, newest kill someone 10 different ways in 2 seconds, or even crappy "I wish I was the original final fantasy, phantasy star, or hell even dragon warrior :) "  RPG.  rpg wise I've played alot of the new ones, AO, EQ (which should be outlawed in addition to the fact that it's a piece of shit,  what good is a game that you can't possibly play without 20-100 fellow raiders, not to mention the fact thay you can't rob your fellow players, and they magically disappear on log-off, where is the p to p rp?  I could talk shit about EQ all day)  anyway none dominates my time like sindome.
beta or not  (though with any luckthe new matrix game will be decent)

and finally I'd like to end my ramblings with a question.. is there any way to check the number of hours you've spent online, playing sindome, or when your newest charcter was created?  or at least when you origonally first logged on or something? If so I wanna know the command.

You get your character's age in days, through your @profile.
Cept that's since you joined sindome, so if you have had more than one character…
yeah i have to take mine and divide by 15 to get an average age of my character..  dang i've had this one too long.. 3 months… its like a record or something for me..  its so cool.

And jotun, no one really cares how much you lost, thats great you lost 100k ( the price of 20 clones, not 1 and 19 updates, but 20 clones)  It's happened to all of us. We all get shafted by the code everynow and then. I'm not even going to say how much was on my body, nor how much vital information and profitable information I lost when I was killed due to code bugs becuase thats not really anyones ooc business. But I can garuntee that you -are not- the only one whos ever had a major loss like that due to buggey code.

And no, you cannot  "freak me" not now. not ever.

Hey, have most items been given defined sizes/weights yet?  I remember at one point we were making an effort to give everything an L + W + H and a weight, that was a pain in the arse.

Having a limit in what you can carry, wear, use, etc would be key.  not every player shoudl be able to wear WJF armor and still be able to run around, stuff like that.

But the thing that held us up before was that not everything was defined.

-SM

ok so back to the origional topic of this post, there is one bad thing about not having a stealthy stash is stealing…. so you pick someone, then your either condemed to hold it and someone will see you got it, or stash it then everyone in the room knows you got it, or hope you can sneak off.   Or maybe when you steal something it should automatically go in your "pocket"
I don't think it should go to your pocker automatically, but I'm definitly in favor of a command to stsh things without people seeing it.
I'll try and make it point to push stashing messages thru the localized speech system soon. That way, it will follow the same perception rules as talking to someone.

Ofcourse, I also have to do some integration between the shadow system and the localized speech system concerning VISUAL sources. This is so someone will have to have found your hidden ass when you stash something in order to see you stash it.

At somepoint in the future, a lot of stuff will integrate into localized speech for this same reason. I've just got to make sure to classify the actions right so you'll hear the gunshot of the sniper using an unsilenced weapon from the shadows and so on.
