This idea I really can't claim any credit too….
but in the SWR codebase (based on smaug) when you ingest quantities of drugs you see random messages across your screen similiar to SIC messages except they seem to just be random messages from your head...

All I'm saying is why not give the people more reason to do drugs, let them see random amusing messages when they're messed up.

You could also do the same for when they're not...

I.E.

"Your skin crawls with sinister demons calling out your name, DAMN...What the hell do they put in your ciggarettes."

Albeit these ideas may limit the horizon of the players expectations of drugs use but they could also further them...I recall once playing a game then coming under the influence of a spell which randomized the color of every text character in the game. Providing me with quite the dazzling experience.

Perhaps it could be similiar to the option the luck attribute plays in the game, as whether you let drugs be present in your gameplay. Messages could be based on the effects of the drugs, for example if a drugs is a downer maybe you see a message consistent with a -120 drug rating...if its an upper you see the message consistent with a +120 rating and so on and so forth.

Its somewhat useless, but somewhat entertaining and in the end all that matter is whether its fun or not.

After searching for the keyword drugs, I've come to notice that alot of brilliant ideas have occured about drugs but not alot of them have been used (to my knowledge. 75% chance I'm wrong ;)

It seems people aren't using drugs, maybe the benefits aren't clear but to a starting character like mine. They proved to be the source of everlasting survival. People are afraid of you because you do drugs, even the cops. Your tougher because you do drugs, and your taken more seriously because you know where to get them.

For some people it just isn't IC for them to -do- the drugs.  For some it would be IC for them.  The player really makes the decisions.  Also, as of right now there are basically only benefits to taking some of the more powerful combat drugs, as negative affects and addiction have not been placed into the game as of yet.  And if they were, alot of people would probably complain (honestly, I'd probably be one of them for a while, but that's just human nature..  oh and also I'm an asshole).

Anywho..  just..  sit tight.  Or something.  Keep the ideas flowing (and if a topic already exists about your idea, try to put your comments in that thread..  makes it alot easier for lazy bums like me to read everything if its all in one place), and state your opinions here.  That's what this place is for.  And who knows, if you get enough people liking your ideas, they may just wind up in the game.

Why should we have to code an effect that should be RP'd by the player? Who knows your characters psyche better than you? And from that thier possible hallucinations and or delusions?

I would be really mad to be honest, really mad if there were forced things that happened to my character when he takes drugs.  I mean like, bugs, or shakes, or stuff like that.  Because maybe my char has been taking the drug for years now, and taking one hit isn't going to fuck him up, its just like.. taking the edge off.  RP'ing being fucked up is alot of fun!  Everyone should try it!  I love doing it.  

One thing I do think should be public knowladge, would be the list of side effects that the drugs induce.  Because otherwise there is no basis for the RP.  Am I supposed to rp being happy, angry, sad.. etc.  If you look at your @stats after taking a drug it shows you the negative effects in what stats go down, and you can use that as a basis.  But if there were a few set things like..

Drug: Ice.

Highly addictive.  Causes eurphoria.  Sharp high, and a long comming down period.

Or something like that, I think that would be better then forced messages.

I definitely agree with Nemisis, there should definitely be messages that tell you how to act depending on the drug, cos otherwise people like me who haven't taken any drugs and don't even know what happens when you get fucked up will be immune to the effects. we'll be walking around doped out of our skulls and not knowing how we should be acting, it actually happened to me in-game once. i was kinda disappointed lol, i was expecting something cool to happen.
At some point we may make the affects of drugs fully open to the player base. In the mean time, ask your dealer.
