Alternates

Taking off on several discussions running around the boards in both Theme and in General Discussion I am wondering what everyone thinks of the idea of having alternate characters?

Wait, before you lambast me and call me dirty names hear me out. A lot of us have put a great deal of time and effort into our characters, but still there are aspects of the game that we would like to try out. But those are things that are not in character for us to do as the characters we have.

I for instance would like to see what its like to play a judge, but there is no way my character would ever want to be one, so my only option now it to wait for my character to be killed and then play a judge.  As I am not likely to go have my character run through the express tubes or pick fights with gangers and judges I don't foresee her death any time soon.  And I'm sure a lot of us have similar ideas of things we'd like to try.

I'd be interested in playing an alternate character to be able to try these things out. I think that giving us an opportunity to have just one alternate character at a time would create the ability for people to explore other aspects of the game that they feel their current character wouldn't.  Players who have judge characters could see what its like to be a ganger.

You'd be more willing to take risks with your alternate character because you'd know that it didn't matter if they died because you still have your permanent character on ice.

And yes, I realise there is potential to have issues with IC abuse of OOC information, but frankly that potential is always there and the kind of people who cheat like that are always going to do it no matter what.

Alright now feel free to belittle my suggestion and attempt at creating a conversation about it and mock me if you so choose.

IMHO, good roleplaying -hinges- on one having only one character, on getting attached to this one character and playing him/her like a real person, instead of playing him/her as just another character. The other problem I see is that one might end up using OOC information -unintentionally-. If you had two or three characters, could you really separate what secrets each one has been privy to, say, a couple months back? Because, you see, one has to remember one's IRL life AS WELL as one's SinDome life…and if you have two Sindome lives it could get very confusing, especially for those who enjoy scheming and collecting information. Who heard what when?

But I may be wrong.

I hear ya Tash. I agree, sometimes it's nice to be able to spread your wings and explore new parts of your favorite game.

If this EVER came into the game these would be some of the rules that've been discussed by admin:

-one character active at one time
That means your main character would be 'on vacation' or sitting in a cryo vat.
-X ammount of time you would -have- to play before going back to your old character.
This goes along with the 'taking risks'. Because I don't want to see people 'create alt', 'attack player' 'financially/reputibly/emotionally hurt player' and then go back to your main character. but too, that could mean your first char might lose contacts, deals, etc…
-It wouldn't be a right, but a privelege.
Meaning that it'd be on an @request based system and you'd get 1 @request per 6 months and simply based on admin opinion of your play, either approve or deny.

Those are the few i can think of now.
What do you think?

The only way this would be done is if we had a vacation system like CS has. Your current character would be put on ice, so to speak, and you could be free to create a new one. I'm sure there would be some sort of hefty charge in doing so, as to prevent the little abusers from going back and forth between characters.

In any case, this has come up before and been discussed. Perhaps when the beta testing stage is over, then it will be looked into.

Reminder for those who don't know.. Alternate characters are currently against the rules (read @rules) and anyone caught with one will be celled and one of their characters toaded. Repeated abuse will result in more severe consequences.

I think it would be swanky to be able to have your character be on vacation and create another one to still have a good time in Sindome with. I hadn't really had an opinion 'till last night when I realized there was a perfect opportunity for Chas' to leave the dome for awhile. I think all the rules would be awesome.
In reference to Stone's post, please remember that those rules he said are not laid in stone and its just notions that were throwing around at this point. Those may or may not be the rules for alts if and when we decide to allow it.
Alts huh,  I don't know,  like I belive Stone said, I'd just have to orry about people being able to differentiate between what one character knows and what the other does.  I have plans for other characters to try new things but im content to sit and wait for the day that Allandra gets permed (God Forbid hehe).  I think that the use of alts will be too much for some of the newer people to handle.  I think that ultimatly they'll be used in conjunction with their main,  like a hired spy of some sort.  I mean it's completely IC'ly posible,  your alts character history would just have to place the new char in the dome for a while.  I'm not saying anyone would actually do something along those lines but the temptaion is still there.  Not only that,  I know how hard it is not to use ooc info ic.  I have quite a bit of it in my head between the conversations i have with people on aim.  It makes it difficult to even approach the subject when you know that the person envolves knows that you know ooc.  So you alot of the time have to RP, disbelief in the charges,  Allandra happens to be friends with a person in the head of a terrprist organization.  I know it but Allandra has no idea.  Will other people be able to make the difference?
-this post is long winded and prolly doesnt make as much sense as i set out to but i hope part of it  does at least.
Don't you tyhink it's kind of sad, that the first thing most people think of when we come up with idea, is how they'd be abused? Yes, I know, People are wankers, and inevitibly someone would abuse it.

Anyway, to the actual point in question, I don't think that newbies beng ovewhelmed by it would be relevant, because I think realistically, any system to allow you to play an alternate charcter should be a privalage, not a right. By request only perhaps, or, restrict it ICly, by using a system similar to CS's @vacation system, and have it cost money.

I can understand what allandra says, in that sure, it's fine to spend your time thinking about what you'll do when your character perms. No, sorry, if your character perms. But what if you've played your character a long time, you like playing them, but you just want to take a rest from it, and play something different for a while?

I dunno, I'm in favour of the idea in theory, but, as with most stuff , it's open to abuse, so it'd need to be properly controlled.

In reference to FS's post. Don't you think it would be better for us to be able to do it while we are in beta? I mean, I've had 2 characters so far. both of which I love dearly. I hate to see them fail in the game. but being able to shoot all the different kinds of guns sounds fun. Especially an enforcer:) Being a decker or a fixer, working for Skywatch and controling the weather. All of those things sound like pretty beta things for us to do yeah?

Just a thought though.

PS-WOW LOOK MA! I'm Streetwise!

Alternates?

Ewww. Yuck.

I admit, the change would  be nice, but hell, I've put so much effort into one char, I don't think I could handle another. I might go insane! Though it would be fun to make an insane preacher for some bizzarro cult…
