Uhm.. yeah. I'm sorry if me posting this here pisses anyone off, but uh.. I don't know what else to do, and I figure -someone- out there knows how to do this. I hope.
I've been trying to take screen catpures from a DVD. But unfortunately it never works. All I get is a black screen, or something that I can only describe as a "hole though the window," which means the pasted picture(in MS Paint, for example) is merely a box in which I can see the DVD window playing in the background. I can move the window around, but the image does't move with it. And when I try to copy it from that program I get the same thing. If I try to print it out it prints out as a big black rectangle.
I've tried everything I can think of. I've used several different DVD-Playing programs, I've used several image-editting programs, I've used several different computers to try and do it! All the same! I've even tried downloading a program specifically designed for capturing screenshots from DVDs, but it has the exact same problem. Can anyone help me out here? :(

Windows, right?
You'll never get a capture in Overlay mode.
Get DeCSS, decode the movie, and use a video editor to remove stills from it.
Google is your friend.

…Or you could just get HyperSnap DX from ZDnet, its free although a registration label is added to every image, but you could just *cough* capture a slightly bigger image than you need and remove the label *cough*.
When you run it, simply check Enable Special Capture from the Capture drop down menu, and all should be good :)
Nice disclaimer by the way Kevlar.

Well how about that! HyperSnap DX does do Overlay mode!
Now the only possible bummer is if you have a hardware DVD decoder card like I do (but elect not to use.)
In this configuration, you have a second PCI decoder card which your video card out plugs into, and your monitor plugs into the decoder card. The software does a chroma-key bluescreen type effect, or get's the positioning information from the software (which must support your card) and the decoder card overlays it manually, after the fact.
In this situtation your basically screwed, because the DVD image dosn't exist ANYWHERE in your video card's memory, which is what's required to do a screen capture with HyperSnap DX.
If anyone has a solution for this configuration which does not involve eliminating the hardware decoder or taking it off the hardware decoder video out, I'de be very very interested to hear it. One must assume it would involve reading it from the hardware decoders memory… but I don't know if the hardware even supports that, let alone the driver, as it would be a completely unnecessary feature that would never get used except in this very rare situtaion and would hardly be worth implementing as it would require a DMA controller from the memory to the PCI bus... but I digress.

Well then you'll have to take my orinigal advice, which is what you want to do for gaurenteed good (1:1 pixel aspect ratio) capture anyway.
Plus you'll have a lot more control over what your saving…
And yeah, if you wanna take that challenge, be my guest. Props for a solution in C++, which is where I'de begin my quest if I was serious about this. Everything else get's a 'Meh'.

But that would involve spending money on stuff. like video-editting software, etc. And besides, its just too much damn trouble for the two screenshots I wanted to take. Oh well.. THanks anyway, guys.

Well that, or a long-ass download. My connection here is worse than my 56k back home. Regardless, its not really worth the time for one or two screenshots. I'll just draw out the diagrams I need.

Having said that, there's this really cool program (http://www.emule-project.net) that when used in conjunction with this really cool website (http://www.sharereactor.com) can really help you with your quest for cheaper solutions. Gaurenteed, no fakes/incompletes when you use this solution.

I know that this is a silly question to ask, but heh.
Aikao you are pressing scroll lock after enabling special capture (overlay mode) to make the capture arent you?
Oh and Kev I'll have to get a Meh then, unless I find a solution and not create one myself, at least until I go beyond my knowledge of the obsolete (except for education purposes) Visual Basic, and learn C++.
