but my friend uses this. raves about it constantly, only problem he's encountered (from what I understand) is when the person who seeds a file goes off line and everyone's left hanging until they come back on.
that and recently they where attempting to find a rather pricey piece of software for evaluation purposes and at 99% the seed goes off line annoying yeah.
now a few days later an email has arrived explaining how software piracy is a naughty thing to do.
dooby dooby doo.
Bit Torrent is not a file sharing program. It's a distributed file distribution system designed to ease the load on servers by spreading the work among the clients downloading from the server.
What's the difference, you ask?
Well… for starters there's no 'search' feature. All downlaods orinigate from a server (instead of the peers, like in any other 'File Sharing Program'), who must advertise the file being avalible for download through some other serivce (like a web page). It was never intended to be used for distribution of files among peers; It's intention is to distribute the load put on a server aptempting to serve up a stream of bits... and this remains it's only function. The fact that people are using it to distribute illegal material dosn't change this.
Having said that it's a rather innovative (well, it was at the time) technology which uses advanced techniques to ensure the integrity for the distributed files such as Forward Error Correction (do a google for FEC), and scatter-gather distribution techniques.
I personally can't stand the 'default' client, and highly suggest finding a Bit Torrent client which suits your personal tastes.
