Quote: from Max on 12:24 pm on April 27, 2003[br]And what's wrong with opinionated wankfests?Isn't that what the BgBB is, at least in pat, for?
I know I really shouldn't post twice in a row with enough combined content to be worth half a post… but I can, so I will.
There's nothing at all wrong with opinionated wankfests in general, my point was regarding opinionated wankfests about music, which are about as valuable as opinionated playground wankfests about "my Dad is tougher than your Dad", or some such. My music is, your music isn't, NuMetal yay, NuMetal boo! I mean seriously, it's the music industry equivelent of fat, retarded lounge lizard and drunken thug sports fans worshipping their chosen teams with blind abandonment, except for the fact that they're being mindlessly competitive about something that actually -IS- competitive.
And that's my wet sackload to contribute to this entirely new opinionated wankfest.
Two cents? More like two squirts.
(Course, I'm really only being bitter coz I couldn't get Placebo tickets and I missed the Foo's despite having tickets coz I had to work...)
oh my…
i just -loves- you guys. hehehe.
*nods in total agreement with TAFKAR about the whole penis wagging contest... uhm.. i mean...arguing about music thing...* heh
*pokes johnny with a stick*
dude, if you've been to BM before tickets where a horrendous waiting game and a ton of money (or before there WHERE tickets) then you're lucky and i'm honestly jealous.
i was locked in an atlanta suburb being protectively smothered by well meaning if silly parents when -that- was how it was.
but, things change :| you take what you can from something and give what you can back to make it something different. plus theres plenty of other stuff out there. burning man is just, well, something i need right now because of how this year has gone. :| it's a head space that i'm missing a LOT right now... *shrug*
and yes, yes it DID snow way to damned much.
*wanders off cursing the swampy n' wet n' snowy mess outside*

By all means, go, create, explore, broaden your consciousiness or just check out the variety of crazy shit going down :) and get your tickets-worth.
I look at todays Burning Man just like todays Woodstock. A crass commerical venture thats out to make a buck first and nurture the creative spirit second.
Funny how all these things are so quickly consumed by the very things they initially set out to protest against.
Resistance is futile.
hrm... but, for many people, varying degrees of commercialism is what the whole thing is- about. you cant really separate yourself from a commercial system. for people just going there, getting camping supplies a year in advance, saving up the money for food/water/transport/misc. the mobs of burners that descend on renos wal-mart (fuck you MS word. ill be damned if i capitalize wal-mart. *cough*) sleep in the hotels and wander about the casinos.
unless youre creative or have access to co-ops, trading and bartering situations (exchange of goods/services for goods/services), dumpsters or other such uhm alternatives, there is no choice other then participation in the exchange of money. plus, even when there where no tickets there where still expenses, gas beer fireworks ammo. hehe. though from what ive been told, you didnt have people trying to out-freak each other. people where themselves (as much as that means anything)
i dont really have a point here, i just like exchanging ideas. :) pardon me johnny for my wordyness.
but youre right, it is different from when it started, the intent has changed, the agendas etc etc. some people say that the burning of the temple the day after the man burns has recaptured the feeling and the mentality of the early years. who knows?
hrm, wonder if it can be said that the sheer size of the whole thing limits how wild it can- be now. streets are needed, cops are needed (it is still in a country that likes to uphold its laws), first aid (once had to sit by a friend who didnt understand what drinking water in the desert really- means), maps, porta potties. all these things are a safety net for the ...sillyness... of crowds. so of course its tame. people have died, been severly injured... things like that look bad on permit applications... permits exist. sad truth, -i- need a permit to set my tripod legs down on certain city streets.
inside however, in the mazes of tents, RV,s, dead ends, empty playa, art sculptures, odd transportation and constructions is where you can encounter people. a lot of them can be -quite- wild
*eyes* im NOT talking wild like girls gone wild videos git yer minds outa that guttah!
anyhoo... enough of that.
resistance is futile but it's also a riot.

If you want to go to non-commercial events, by the way, there's always those little 'parties' the Society for Krishna Consciousness throw, hey, free halva and free rice, lots of chanting. Bring some mush (that's what we call shrooms over here) and you can have yourself a great afternoon. Followed by a slightly less great evening when you realize it's eleven, pitch black in the middle of a park and you're alone, and uncertain of which way home is. Which is why you bring friends.
Once there I saw a giant -PINK- bunny rabbint and a huge rubber ducky, and some dude dressed up like a flower....
I've realized...I don't really care what burning man is if I have to look at pink bunny rabbits and some dork dressed up like a flower.
