First, there was 'Hacker', a nifty DOS-based hacking game, and its sequel, 'Hacker 2'.

Then, pver 15 years later came 'Decker', a user-friendly, graphical 'hacking game'.

Then came 'Uplink' (now released in North America as well, by Strategy First and Infogrames), which remained somewhat graphical, but dug deeper into the guts of hacking.

And now, Darksigns is here, an entirely console-based hacking game. Do I see a cycle?

The problem with games like this is it gives people a very false sense of what 'hacking' really is.

You can't write a script that'll brute force a remote system. You can't access the administration menu and have it spit out the keys to the kingdom mixed in with garbled text. You can't just download a 0-day exploit and run it against every machine you find. (Well, you can, but expect a knock at the door)

Pay attention now, kids: Your not a hacker because you can access the windows share of your next door negibor over the internet, or because you can run a script and crash a website. Hacking requires a detailed understanding of the underlying workings of a computer… specifically the assembly instruction set, the protocols involved, and the memory subsystem. Untill you've smashed the stack for fun and profit without the use of a script you downloaded, and assembled your own malformed packet from scratch, you're just a script kiddie.

It does look like fun game though.
