I know it doesn't get read there so I'll post it here for all to see.
Hawaiian only school loses it's day in court.
On a side note here: Kam school's is NOT Hawaiian only! Kamehameha schools gives preference to native Hawaiians as set forth in Ms. Bishop's will and the students are paid for through her trust. Barring that no native Hawaiians have equal or better qualifications, they'll let anybody in. To go against this will, to go against this trust, would undermine the entire legal aspect of wills and trusts.
The simple fact is this, without Kam schools, the Hawaiian culture would have gone the way of the dodo and New Orleans. There are other fine privite schools on the islands, including highly rated Punahou School's $12,885 and Iolani School's $12,200, neither of which is race restrictive. These schools do not cater to Hawaiians and even if they did Hawaiians can not get into them, because we as a people are poor. The only reasons non Hawaiians want their kids in Kam school is because they don't want to pay for the other ones. The trust is for Hawaiians ONLY. If you wish your son or daughter to attend Kam school, you pay full price, your kid must pass the enterance exams and you better damn well respect the Aina and Ohana of Hawai'i.
In the article, it states that the monarchy was overthrown by U.S. Businessmen and Sugar Planters. They neglected to leave the U.S. Navy and the rest of the goverment. But never the less…
For years now, Hawaiians were split up into three groups, those that want to suceed from the union and set up their own goverment, those that say to hell with you, I like the goverment we have now and, like me, the fence sitters.
I belive that the U.S. Goverment has no business being in certin places. Private schools is one of them. The Jewish community, have their own schools, the africa american have their's. Do these parents want to get their children into those? Bah. Off topic...
Back to the fence sitters, I was torn for a long time about this argument, when I lived in Hawai'i, I was recieving federal student aid to go to a public college. No U.S., No Aid money, duh! My Hawaiian grandmother recieves her social security. Without U.S. involvment in the islands, we would have been over run by the Japanese back in the days of WWII and our culture would have be shot to shit. We wouldn't have the infrestructure that we have in the islands and much of the resourses that Hawaiians use on a daily basis, ie. welfare, wouldn't be there. Good jobs, like on Military bases wouldn't be there either.
But in light of these recent supreme court rulings, I must say that I am more inclined now more than ever, to get my ass off the fence and side with purist. Suceed from the union, get back to the basics, get back to our culture and our people. What is next? Forcing Hawaiian emergence schools to speak english?
