IC Masking

What do people think about IC RP masks, simply clothing that covers the player's features. Obviously the name will still be there, but they should theoretically be unidentifiable aside from height, physical stature, etc. How much confusion will it cause if people don't 'look' at the player and launch into RP. Bob runs into bar and points his Glock at Gunnar, everyone in the Drome sees Bob, but don't look. SIC is alive with 'Bob the maniac is robbing the Drome!'….

I know there were coded masks, but should we rely on code to RP this type of thing? Should we use the IC @title to indicate a mask? Bob in ski mask? Ski mask wearing Bob? Another issue is you can't rip the mask off to reveal Bob, but of course this could RPed with out any trouble if the IC circumstances permitted.

------------------
my day at work..."there won't be a committee, there won't be a meeting...just build the fucking bridge."

This is an issue that has been discussed many times before… and what it boils down to, is yes, title and full body coverage would cover someone completly.

This does have difficulties though... people could claim that based how someone acted, they'd know them. Which could lead to problems and "ruined RP".

I'd like to get a finalized form on how this is used, and what does and does not "mask" someone.

In my experience, people have hidden before without using any stats/skills, there's one player(Whom I won't mention because this is an ooc forum obviously ;) ) who has been walking around for months with a basically full body mask on, and everyone's RPed(The I know of) as such.
This is how the rules stand as well as I know them:

Combat is coded. When you type 'attack <someone>' you enter into combat. This is used so that people have an unbias way of determining the outcome of conflict.

Though Combat is coded, it is perfectly acceptable to RP fighting. If I emote a swing towards your head, you have the opportunity to RP your reaction, i.e. being hit, or ducking. However, I may decide that I don't want to waste my time with that kind of RP. In my opinion it's a waste of RP when there's a perfectly good system in place to determine what happens.

This topic is similar:

Eventually, there will be a coded way to disguise yourself. There will be IC objects that based on your diguise skill and some stats will allow you to fool others as to your true identity. Others will have the chance to discover who you are with other stat checks. etc etc…

It is Perfectly acceptable for me to change my description (within' reasonable boundaries), and wear clothing that hides my @nakeds.  But does that mean someone HAS to play along with that kind of RP?? No...we admin do not enforce that.  If someone who ICly knows who another character is, they would know them despite what clothing they wore (if they choose). But is it perfectly acceptable for people to play along?? OF COURSE! that's the fun part.

Now if you don't know the name of the character, then disguised or not, you only know them by a description. And not until you ask someone who DOES know them, either by pointing them out or giving them a description, can you find out their 'NAME/TITLE'.

My suggestion (and it's just a suggestion) is that people make up their own minds and stick with it.  DO NOT get into arguments over who knows what? If Nic's in disguise (using clothing) and Gerik doesn't want to play that way, then he has the right. But be consistent. Don't change how you play based on the circumstance. Don't play along with your friends and then don't play along with you IC enemies just so you can have the upper hand.

Another suggestion is Yes...do something with you Title so that someone entering the room sees, "Oh...they're doing something different." etc. If you want to mention OOC that you're attempting to disguise...then do so. But what I find the most fun, is to try and wait for people to slip up in their RP...give something away. That's the whole fun of the game is trying to be flawless in your strategies or to cover up your mistakes well :)

Does that satisfy everyone?

Yup, Stonemonk basically covers it, you're welcome to RP a mask but other players are under no obligation to play along. Coded masks will be more common once they're better implemented but at the moment they're way too powerful, rendering them somewhat unbalancing. A non-coded 'disguise' is the product of a players RP choices and there's no rules whatsoever to prevent other players shaping their actions to counter such non-code supported circumstances…

That said, and both the disguiser and spotter could be guilty of this, power-playing your RP'd actions to severely unbalance or strongarm your way into/out of a situation -is- frowned upon. While there aren't officially rules against it, expect strongarm RP to earn you lots of negative attention from players and admin alike.

Basically, use your common sense.

Oh, and I disagree partially with Stonemonk's angle on RP'd combat. While horseplay, aggro-posing and posed combats are acceptable, RP'd KO's and severe combats should utilize combat. If you RP getting a severe beatdown from someone then your arch enemy, Joe Thug, arrives on the scene, it's hard to justify you being at full strength for Joe Thugs attack against you when RP wise you were just beaten to within an inch of your life. By all means pose RP, but if code is suitable, use it. As I've said before, if I stumble across someone RPing events that the code supports I won't hesitate to apply code to the circumstance. If you pose unconsciousness, don't be surprised if your character -does- suddenly KO. If you pose being shot at by snipers, don't be surprised when a bullet tears through you and you start spurting blood everywhere *cough*. The admin are monitoring events in the game world and -do- control the game worlds response to your activities...

Hrm…
