My Computer = Civil War

Alright, first of all, I apologize for (1) This having absolutely nothing to do with the game, and (2) Offending anyone with my Topic and Topic Description.

Anywho.. I got a new computer a while ago, because my old one committed suicide. There were alot of stories, pieces of my old artwork, essays, and even SD-related stuff on my old hard drive, so.. I decided to install it as a Slave drive on this computer.

I have it all set up. I put the jumpers in the right places for both the Master and Slave drives. Everything is connected correctly. Windows XP has recognized it as new hardware, and automatically installed the drivers. However.. there is a problem. Windows did not give the drive a label (i.e. C: or D: ), so I cannot access any of the data stored on it.

I've tried a number of things to get this to work. Windows does not display the new hard drive in "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" or anything, but it does show it (with the spiffy little name I gave it on my old comp and everything) in the "Computer Management" editor thing (Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Computer Management. From here its in the "Storage>Disk Management" submenu). When I right-click on the drive there, I can see the option to "Change Drive Letters and Paths.." but I cannot select it. I don't know why.

There is a difference in the File System of each drive. My Master drive is NTFS, and my Slave drive is FAT32. However, I've been told, and I've google'd it and seen on several message boards, that this should -not- be a problem. So I've tried other things.

I've gone into the BIOS several times to try and make changes. I've tried it both with the hard drive installed, and uninstalled (I've done this several times already). Nothing seems to work at all. I just can't figure it out, and its driving me insane. I'd -really- like to keep the data that's in there, however, there is no way that I can think of to get it out.

Does anyone know what I'm supposed to do? This is frustrating as Hell.

Assuming your filesystem is intact (which is not to say it is… that may be part of the problem; it may be the cause of your previous computer's suicide), you should have the option of clicking on your drive (in the Computer Management/Disk Management section as you described) and right-clicking on the partition itself (beneath the drives, it's the long rectangle that says fat32) and selecting 'assign drive letter' or something of that nature.

Assuming that dosn't solve your problem, Google for a discussion board dedicated to solving windows problems and post there. They will undoubetedly be of more help than us.

Yeah, that's what I tried before..  heh.

I'll try the google thing.. is there a way for me to know for sure if my file system is intact or not?

Whee.  I started posting on the G4techTV Tech Support Forums..  so far I'm getting people telling me the same things I listed that I'd tried that didn't work.  :(

Anyway, for my sig I shamelessly plugged the MOO a little with a spiffy little link and everything.  Whoohoo.

Eh, I'm bored.
