New Orleans Situation

I know everyone is probably sick to death of hearing about it, but I figure we might as well have our own discussion / random thoughts on it.

It almost sounds like something that would be on our timeline, doesn't it? Surreal…

2085.8.30 - Due to lack of fundings to finish effective levees, New Orleans is ravaged by a large category 5 hurricane...etc

Is it worth it to rebuild? Even if so, how many will be willing to come back? How long will gas prices remain so high (even as of late), and what other effects will we see (insurance costs are around 25 billion last I heard on CNN, having to cover that amount of money would affect us somehow, I would imagine), what unseen effects are on the way?

Why are people STILL suprised about high and raising gas prices? God, are you people DAFT!?

NON. RENEWABLE. RESOURCE.

That means once it is gone, IT IS GONE. You think it is going to get better? Hell no. Gas prices will remain high, and get higher. Even more so now that a major port in the US is shut down.

As to New Orleans, I laugh, because it is sinking as is, it is built on a swamp, and what do people do when there is a disaster? They go out and fucking LOOT.

So what if a hurricane flooded an American city. Guess what, there are dozens of cities, and millions of people who have their homes flooded away all over the world. Canada, Germany, Bangladesh, China, Brazil.

Whooop-dee-doo.

You don't like it, don't live in a hurricane zone.

And just you wait, before long we're going to need a Category 6 hurricane level, because as we burn more of that expensive gas-oh-leen we'll be dumping more energy into the air, and more energy in the air means more hurricanes, more storms, and stronger winds.

Welcome to the age of humanity where we get bit on the ass for being foolish. Mother Nature is going to correct things right good. And I am happy for it.

end rant.

Can I get a mod to delete that? This is a discussion about the situation Iga, not a place for you to rant and remind everyone you're our Resident Angry Foreigner.

You're an admin, you should know better. Everyone on topic please. If you want to yell at stupid Americans and their stupid ways, go start your own thread. Christ.

*Watches Iga soar away on a umbrella poppens stylee*

Lets see…regarding gas...umm...halliburton? umm...hasn't gas been really expensive in nearly EVERY other country but the U.S. for quite some time? umm...what do all those tanks and stuff run on? Guava Juice? umm...the war is sponsored. umm...i wish i had stock options in the right corporations.

Regarding Hurricane's...like who blew up all our coral reefs :stoner2:? Possibly the same motherfuckers who can afford to live on the coast? Or possibly those crazy cubans that fish with dynamite?

Rebuilding will occur. Whenever there's a price tag some rich moron will build it just to say "I built it...fuck mother nature. I own this shit!" Although, with a hefty price tag like $25 billion...we can all look forward the celebrity coalition of the willing who will con us all out of money they should spend with the new hit single, "Atlantis is the U-S-A"

Aquaman is fucking John Basedow.

(Edited by ReeferMadness at 10:40 pm on Aug. 30, 2005)

If mother nature wants a fight, let's give it to her.
Rebuild New Orleans. BURN ALOT of gas, and litter. Fucking litter all day like me.

And take it from someone who got hit by like a million hurricanes last year. That shit sucks, and I totally feel for them.

I wonder, from a bystander's typically removed perspective, who worries more about the devastation these natural disasters cause…the rich (even the poor) Americans who have their houses torn down and rebuilt on a regular basis...or the people of places like Bagladesh, who have jack shit to speak of but for whom having all your worldly posessions whisked away by mother nature is business-as-usual?

Oh, I am so sorry Lotus. I was under the impression that a 'discussion' was an 'open discourse on a topic'.

My bad, I guess this is 'lets just say what Lotus aprooves of'.

You asked how long gas prices would be high: My opinion is it will get higher.

You asked if it was worth rebuilding: My opinion is 'Don't build a major port in a swamp that is sinking'

You asked about the social implications: My opinion is that the event just shows how pathetic north american lifestyle is when the cops are boating past hundreds of dead to get to areas where people are looting stores.

You asked about the larger implications of having a big megastorm hitting an American city: My opinion is that it is going to happen more often due to environmental changes initiated by North American style living, and that the rest of the world deals with this on a regular basis.

I am sorry if you simply see 'Iga' and then hate it. That is not my fault Lotus. And what is MORE I am not the 'Angry Resident Foriegner' Lotus. Sindome is an INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY ONLINE. We are all fucking forieners here, and we are all angry. Except Jinx. He's just perturbed. And I wasn't 'Yelling at stupid Americans', I was yelling at stupid people who do stupid things for stupid short sighted reasons.

It is interesting that you automatically assume that means American.

I'm afraid of americans. :paranoid:
lol, the bad part of that is, Iga's Canadian!
I live in Adelaide (which is in Australia, for those of you playing at home).

Adelaide is on a fault line.
While it's nowhere near a 'bad' fault (last earthquake of any 'merit' was in 1954, it cracked the face of the town hall clock), I'd not be really surprised if one day we all got a bit shaken up.

Speaking of, I just got news today that a major building in town is collapsing, and nobody (apparently) is quite sure why. A wall crumbled, or something.

Everything is falling down, everywhere. This is not news.

What …saddens me, I guess, is that Americans (therefore, "the world" as we know it) seem more cut up about the New Orleans thing than about the goddamn tsunami that destroyed parts of Indonesia on Boxing Day last year. Several hundred thousand people died and entire islands were wiped out.

That whole thing only really made the news because of the sheer magnitude of just how many people died (every time we heard a news report, the number doubled).
...to illustrate a point, there was a natural disaster of similar magnitude in the six or so months preceding Christmas - but nobody heard about it because it happened in the middle of China (and therefore didn't affect anyone who 'mattered' to Western / 1st world civilisation).

I'm not saying it's not bad, or it's not a 'tragedy' or whatever other buzzword is currently being applied to the situation, but ... really, the fact I've heard more about "how much it's going to cost" rather than anyone concerned about the loss of life ... that, to me, is the saddest thing.

Well duh! Americain's only care about themselves and gas prices, and what the president is doing. I'm moving to Australia.
Ah but, we're not far behind, unfortunately.

…to the point where Little Johnny (Howard, Prime Minister) has referred to "the United States of Australia" in a press conference or two.

Seriously, he's got his head so far up GWB's ass it's no real wonder he's unable to see the problems in his own country.

Blah blah I promised myself I wouldn't discuss politics here because I just get angry.

*breathe in ... breathe out*

America owns. Get over it :D

VIVA LA AMERICA!

But honestly, I agree with you Chienne, even here in Canada the shit that went on in China was barely a blip. (Am I right in assuming you are talking about the massive flooding that was taking out cities with 20 million people in them this spring/early summer?)

But hey, 'America Owns'.

We'll just see how much and what off in a few years I suppose. So back to New Orleans and how this is going to affect the biggest party in the US-of-A, Mardi Gras.

Because that is the real issue here. It isn't people who are so dispirited that they are running around looting malls while their neighbours are dying. It isn't that this is the worst hurricane damage ever recorded in USA history, but if you go to Haiti it's been shitty like this every year for ever. It isn't that people are flooded, a port is shut down, and gas flows are dropping driving prices up.

All that matters is that Mardi Gras will be adversly affected. Where will tens of thousands of American youths get Mardi Gras beads? Where will 'Girls Gone Wild' get new footage? Where will young boys see flashed mamaries for free in a drunken parade? For the love of GOD, some people will FAIL TO LOSE THEIR VIRGINITY!!

That is almost as bad as the cultural buildings, art work, sculpture, grave stones, and beauty that has been damaged, in some cases permanently.

I bet this was a terrorist attack.

Two plus Two equals Five. The light is BLUE. Zig Heil, Amen, and Drink up.

Shit. I totally forgot about Mardi Gras.
SEE! SEE! You people are all worried about trivial things here. Like death tolls and property damage.

What about MARDI GRAS?!

I'm actually worried about loved ones that live down that way that I've not been able to contact… To hell with the bullshit parties...
Now now, we all know that the hurricane was sent by god as a way to punish the pro-choice and gay rights camps.

I notice I see no discussion about the amount of funds diverted from the SELA flood prevention project congress started back in the 90s. Or about the hiring freeze the Army Corps of Engineers were forced to do because of budget cuts. Or about the severe lack of national guard troops available because they're in Iraq.

*sigh* The Right sickens me. This was a preventable tragedy, but we know the blame won't get anywhere near who it should.

Jman, where -do- you find these things? All I can ever find on the internet is tits and homestarrunner.

And, so everyone knows, I am NOT good enough to go to heaven.

*googles for tits and homestarrunner*

The only way to fight the disinformation campaign from the right is to be more informed than Joe 12 Pack of Coors who gets his news from CNN and Faux News.

I read about 35 news sites a day and lots of players, ex-players, friends, coworkers and other irate people share these tidbits with me throughout the day.

This bit of a double standard struck me as amusing. Is it journalist bias or just two different situations entirely? The debate rages in the blogs. I personally can't decided.

Well then! I'm glad to know that normal white people don't loot stores…they "find". damn people of color, why can't they just "find" food too.

Looting or Finding, what ever you want to call it or label it as, it comes down to one thing chummers, surviving! The people of N.O. are doing what we do everyday when we log on to SD. The only difference, they have to do it, we play a role. Survival of the fitest, fight or flight. It all goes back to some of our most basic and primitive instincts as animals.

Loot, steal, pillage, survival by any means nesicary. Feed yourself, feed your family. Do what ever you have to do to live. We are hunters and gatherers, Humans are survivers and in this game of surviver, there's no prize for second place.

What a crock of shit, I see people walking out of run down stores with an arm full of fucking starter jerseys, how the fuck is that survival? That's taking advantage of a situation, it's deplorable to think that any member of the human race can support or justify any action of that type.  As for the whole finding/looting thing, whee let's throw a racial problem on the heap of issues surrounding the flooding in new orleans.  let's throw more stones, let's make more problems.  I'm not saying it's not an issue, but fuck, aren't there more important things to be worried about? Finding, looting, STEALING. If these people where stealing bottled drinking water and food, I could see justifying such an action, but 50 of the same damn shirt? People make me Sick
Most people from what I understand ARE looting places for food and water.  Hell, its not like they're getting much relief from anywhere else.

And the people who are looting for clothing and whatnot..  well hell, the place is insured anyway, and if they don't get it (and probably in most cases, even if they do) the shit is gonna be ruined anyway.  That's not -just- water there.  That's sewage and waste and dead bodies.  You honestly think they'll still sell that shit when this is over?  Can't be good for the condition of clothing.  And who knows, maybe they're gonna burn it later to cook some of the food they swiped?  Hehe.

Anyway, I say who gives a shit?  What I -don't- get however is why there were shots fired from the ground at a helicopter, forcing them to abort a rescue mission..  bah.

(Edited by Chaos at 3:31 pm on Sep. 1, 2005)

I'd loot. I'd loot anything I could reasonably carry. I'd grab food, clothing and stuff I could sell for money since my job washed away too and I might not be able to loot tomorrow and then I'd need money for food and shelter.

Hunting and gathering in the urban wilderness. *shrugs*

Daddy needs a new laptop!
Btw. I think it's mildly retarded that some think Americans shouldn't be whineing or complaining becuase shit happens elsewhere every single day. Do they whine and complain? I'd damn well think so.

And I really don't support Bush or his crew, but this probably couldn't have been prevented.  It's not like Tom Cruise is President and we can see into the future, nor can we do all that much against a cat 5.

I do think they should of issued a broadcast along the lines of GET THE FUCK OUT NOW when they had the slightest hint it was comeing up that way though.

This is depressing. Reality is depressing.

Someone medicate me until it feels good again…

So this brings up the question: Is it looting if I find it slogging through chest deep water down the street? Like, am I stealing if I am picking up cans of Puritan Beef Stew and Chicken'N'Stars condesced soup as I walk along? Who knows where it is from, it could be from a store, from a truck, from Florida.

It's a strange grey area isn't it.

Actually, they did issue the get the fuck out, broadcast. The people that were left were either too poor, too old, no gas to leave the city, or they refused. People do refuse to leave when a hurricane comes through stupid yes, but us humans aren't bright all the time.

I'm with johnny on the looting. If you can't eat it, sell it.

What I think is deplorable is the fact that people are getting raped while in the super dome. Fuck the other shit, N.O. will soon be under martial law, I hope everybody has some spare UE cause we're going to need it.

Survival tip #1 Coping with gas prices:

A long screw driver and 2foot piece of hose will get you anywhere you need to be.

you forgot the tictacs
Hmmm. Odd. They usually issue that broadcast like half an hour before the damn thing gets here.

I still have utter faith in humanity.

Personally, I think Bush should have drowned…

Guess that depends on how you look at it. I like to focus on the stories of the dads holding their kids above water, or the mom telling her husband to let her go so he could save the kids. Lots of people sacrificed themselves for their loved ones to live. They are heros too.

I hope everyone has donated. I hope everyone has been asked at work or has started asking everyone else at work. This is truely horrific and everyone needs to help in any way they can.
