New SIC ads

So, like, it's none of my business anymore, but back in the day SIC ads weren't supposed to exceed 79 characters in length per line since alot of clients and such default to wrapping at 80 chars and anything over that for something that's supposed to have a standard aesthetic appearance will screw things up and this is a really long run on sentence to point all that out…

So anyhow. There's a couple of SIC ads in the loop now that -really- screw that aesthetic over and look ugly as sin if you're wrapping at 80 chars...

Sort that shit out, whackos.

Just out of curiousity, while the point is being raised:

Can I get a show of hands of people using terms which wrap at 80 charcaters?

-Kevlar

Good question, maybe I was wrong about changing the standard.
does pueblo wrap at 80? if so *raises his hand*

wait i have wrap tunred off….nevermind

….what?
just nod and smile …

;)

So is that a no, then?

Anyone? Anyone? What kind of economics? Voo-something economics?

Let me summarize: Is anyone experiencing any display problems with the SIC ads? Are they breaking in the middle of the line causing the prettily formatted text to come out looking like a jumble of crap? Or is everyone operating with a sane monitor resolution/font size/MOO client?

Better yet, let me summarize the summary: Are the big SIC ads fucked up on your screen? Or are they mearly an annoyance which you (un)happily ignore?

Maybe it's my (as Iga describes it) engineer speak that's confusing you. Here… I ran it through a translator.

Be da damn big-ass S-I-fuckin'-C ads fucked down on yo' screen?  Slap mah 'fro!
O' be they mear-like some annoyance which yo' ass (down low, un)happi-like
igno'?

Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

Good for you that you stated that that's how Iga describes it because, ahah, you get the picture.

Your summaries weren't actually summaries but rather mildly condescending 'explanations'.

I don't see how people couldn't understand it, I assume that the problem is that you assume that's why not many people have responded.
For me at least, I just couldn't be bothered.
I havent come across any problems, but I use pueblo still, and I don't want any client to take up the whole screen, and text wider than some of the current SIC Ads would be crazy, so I suggest that they at least don't get any wider.
May I ask, what the current standard is? Unless you've deregulated it, in which case *gets ready to slap the admins with a white glove*…

Erm yeah,

No wider :)

Oh, and I don't really care about such trivial matters when problems exist such as being attacked instantly by an npc as soon as one enters a room, receiving no poses or the like, getting beaten, falling unconcious, and then, curiously, being killed. Nice going. Whilst you regulate Twink players, you set up npc's to take over the role big time.
*wonders of mumbling "why, oh why didn't I got @ooc"*

Ahh, I see why you assumed that *notices Aikao's "….what?"*. Still, hmm, 100 max? *shrugs*

In my opinion the Terra Ad is a nice width, whilst the progia one isn't.  But if people can't just shorten them, keeping it at 80, that's okay, but on one condition, @wow me is, as part of @who gets longer as well ;)

However I know that some people use Telnet, especially when that's all they may be able to use from work or something, in which case, wraping at greater than 80 would be a little harsh.

Okay the 'Westside   Elective   Clinic' SIC Ad is too wide.

I don't want my client taking up that much space you know. On top of that, it's uneccesarily so as the 'Cybernetics' 'Cosmetics' etc text could just go on an extra line.
I don't think that even if ones client is okay with such widths, that they should exist. I personally don't like to read things so wide. 80 characters seems rather ideal actually, which is closer to book and other medium widths, which is rather fitting…

Old standard was 79 characters, the default @wrap setting in lambda, and thus Sindome. It would appear, from Johnny's post, that this has been increased though I very much doubt "deregulated" as Protagonist put it.

The idea is that SIC ads have a standard aesthetic appearance and each line of each ad fits on one single line of display on the players client. If the westside elective clinic ad (Protagonist) is too wide, then I'm guessing your actual window size is narrower than 80 chars, since I -think- that's an old ad and I can personally guarentee that all the old ads are 79 chars or less.

It's fairly obvious if you see it, chances are if you don't know what this is all about, you're client/wrap settings are sufficient to accomodate the new longer ads.

However, might I suggest that if the standard has been changed it'd make sense to actually -change- the "standard"? The only reason I even noticed was because, at some point in the past, I toggled my inMOO @wrap on and, shock-horror, the default linelength is… 79.

And since it was mention, although I don't really care, I'd be inclined to find anything over 3 or 4 lines for a single ad to be a bit offensive. It's totally irrelevent in my absence, I know, but when I reworked the SIC-ads the aim was to emulated something akin to convential sized web banner ads and retain something of a sense of subtlety. Some of the larger ads are annoyingly over-sized and I can imagine it being quite frustrating to have 6 (or more?) lines thrown off the top of the screen in the middle of a large group RP situation. (I leave it to the astute amongst you to find the humour in that last line ;))

Good to see a few more responses tho, for a couple of days it looked like Kev's impromptu "player" poll was going to be taken very literally.

oki oki. joo wants answer? joo get answer.

no encountered problems with SIC adds breaking up…
i tend to have all windows wide enough to accomodate 80 chars, a screen res of 1280x1024 or larger and teeny tinny chicken scratch font.

eyesight? whadyamean -eyesight-?

right, that doesn't help much now -does- it?

but if you guys make them any bigger... :P

Didn't you once mention you were on a laptop?

1280x1024 on a laptop screen?

If yes…...Are you insane? Back in the day (when PIIIs had just come out!), in the 3d lab we would only go 1280x1024 on the friggin-huge Silicon Graphics monitors (19"? 20"?), and even then after eight or nine hours of working we had to lower the contrast substantial to avoid headaches of death.

You're killing your eyes! KILLING YOUR EYES!

Huh? I used to have that as a default at one time on my 17"er, which has about 16.9" viewable.

Now I've settled for 1152 X 864.

I mean 1600 x 1400 on a 19" is normal, and you can't have the contrast and brightness anything below 100% ;)

*shrugs*

Two ads in the system are over 80 characters, by 2 characters.

I am personally against SIC ads that are more than 6 lines long, but its open ended for the players to make long ads, so I really can't control that aspect of it.

Maybe the SHFL SIC ad could be slimed down better. And hell, when was the last time a player actually ran a SIC ad that was really an ad and not some personal rant?

Whats up with that?

Hey! one of my previous chars ran an ad.
actually he ran 2 ads! For a client! He made money off of it! well kinda…. but yeah! so there! it only ran a week though...both of them....they were big, 5 lines or so. kinda fucked your eyes if you looked at 'em too long.
but yeah...
player run ads at  work.
hah!
