If you only have time to fit a couple hours a day/week in, then do that. But try not to get overly involved in scenes that take too much of your time. Job wise, low-key jobs are definitely your choice. As Kuzco mentioned, and I'll second it specifically. Bartending jobs are one of the without a doubt easiest to do for someone on a time budget, especially if you're in one of the smaller, less frequented bars where PC staff are a rarity.
Lastly, don't really stress about how often you can play. As long as you play enough to enjoy the game, you're fine. As more time becomes available, branch out more. If time runs out again, constrict yourself that little. Playing actively isn't mandatory, but having fun is necessary. So play when you can and want to.
