Stats vs. History

Your char is a Mad Max type bad ass that has seen a lot of combat. Now he comes to Whitmore and his dodge, pistol, short blade and stealth are all useless or poor.
How did you survive all those years out in the desert???

Then I finally figured the right way to play Sindome.
Create a new character. Max out few combat skills at the beginning.
Do runs for Bruce only when it is necessary to pay your rent.
Otherwise stay in your cube for about six months.
Now you have enough UE to raise your stats and skills to the level that accurately reflects your character's history.

Think about that…

Its called Role-playing.

Think about that…

Yes… yes... it is all about the roleplay.

When I first started this game, I was a bit timid... after a week. I played my char as the badass commando he was. Even though he didn't have the stats.

I manipulated, paid, and sleep-killed my way into people's minds. Made them think my char was stronger than he was. All of this took place with very little combat... except for the occasional getting-my-ass-kicked-by-Devon routine. ;-) The stat part just kinda starts to fall into place on its own.

RP is the key to everything. You could be a badass stat-whore(TM)... but if you don't RP. 1) No one knows it. 2) People may know it, but won't take you seriously. 3) You won't have fun.

Like Neo said... think about it. You want to be Mad Max.... go for it. Pick on some other newbies or something. An oldbie tries to mess with you? Figure out a way to RP around and kick his/her ass. Its possible, trust me.

Mad Max had some pretty sucky stats. His only *great* skill was driving, and he had average rifle and some brawling. Until Thunderdome, he pretty much got his ass kicked. But by then he had craploads of UE to spend, y'know.

Besides, five bucks says that dogfood was laced with V-202.

Mad Max was just an example.
It's all about RP, I know. And everything goes well until you meet a ganger in the street. Ok, your char's history states that you have been out there and you have seen a lot of combat. Your nature is that you don't take bullshit from anyone. The ganger starts to annoy you asking for you wallet and stuff. You don't give him anything and you say piss off. Ganger attacks. You attack ( it's the char's nature). You lose, you die, because ganger's player has been playing for over a year and you have been playing two weeks. You make another char…you meet a ganger in the street...you die. And it goes on and on and on...
You could run, you could give him your wallet. But that would be bad RP. Because your char just doesn't do that. You shoud not think about stats I know but how can you ignore them in a situation like that? I don't want all of my chars to die.
This all is to raise discussion about RP vs. in game mechanics and how they get in your way.
I don't play Mad Max type chars and I have died only once so far.
And I have played pen&paper RPGs for over 12 years now so I know how to roleplay.
Hrmmm…. over a year and two weeks, that sounds familiar.

Unfourtionatly, alot of newbs get there chars caught up in shit that doesn't really involve them and wind up dyeing, throwing a fit, and eventualy wind up quiting. I appluad Valeria, she in looseing her first char in a rather shitty way has remained polite, logical, and understanding. Not to mention she didn't go all super bitch and leave, that is most definatly a -GOOD- thing. I've had the opertunity to RP with her and for someone so new to our little corner of the net, she's picked up rather quickly and isn't all that bad with her RP considering how new she is.

                                                     Sincerly,
                                                        Lucien's shadow

I'll say it again.

STATS ARE IRRELIVANT.

Christos. Perhaps you all shouldn't keep making these stupid ass histories with linear, simplistic characters that are allready oh-so-hot-shit in the history.

Hmmm? YEAH? YOU FIGGER?

Like, think about it kids. I've seen some good histories, and they tie to stats really well, and they NEVER have the typical 'I am a badass whatever from way back, fear me.' attitude.

Finesse people. Characters are more than a few little numbers in a data base. They are not just these hard assed monsters.

they can grow to be that. But they sure as fuck don't start there.

I won't make a habbit of this…but...

I agree with Wren ;)

Build yourselves a reputation kids..it's better armoured than a suit of Xo3 if you do it right.

Maybe your character's spent his life fighting off the malnurished bandits in the desert, comes to Withmore and finds all these well fed Gangers, getting fat off other peoples money. That's why they kick your ass.

Like Iga said…"Roleplay it" - I mean, really come on. You can't expect to come out of chargen and rock the world from day one. You need to (icly) find out who's who, what's what, where things are, why things are how they are.

If your character's going to mouth off at people he/she icly knows nothing about, and they kick your ass for it....well, what did you expect? Always people bigger, stronger, faster than you...

Take drugs, run in packs, whatever but stop worrying about why it is that your trained-from-birth-ninja-assasin-on-a-mission-to-right-the-worlds-wrongs gets schooled by Doodle, the NLM Christmas Imp and start roleplaying...

Game on!

Yep, I'm backing up what's been said.  Maybe even though your character is a tough cookie, he has to face new weaknesses because he's in a new and challenging environment.  Most of the characters who arrive here have probably never lived in a place like Withmore, so the fact that other people are stronger could be partially because the newbies are adapting.  In a period of adaptation, there are bound to be many weaknesses.

Or, as was also said, you could try making a character who's tough in a non-stat oriented way.  For example, Tylissa is a very plucky person, but she had almost no physical strength or ability when she came here.  Even now, I build those stats slowly, as she gradually adjusts to life in Withmore and learns to be physically stronger.  If I decide to suddenly boost her more physically-oriented stats, I will probably have her start training with someone to explain it.  But, yeah, stats are not really necessary for good RP.  Tylissa relies on her intelligence and strength of character for survival.

There are many ways to get by.  Just don't make a character with no brains and lots of brawn, because then of course you can't play him realistically.

Reputations are good. Reputations are often malnourished in this game. People don't spend enough time working on their reputation and building it up so that one little rumour won't kill it.

Yeah, call me fluffy bunny if you want to but this topic is putting too much emphasis on combat skills and stats. That's not all there is to the game. Play someone who's very sneaky and a good thief. Play someone who's intelligent and can manipulate others.

Its not all about the smack down unless you make it that way and if you do be prepared to meet Bertha.

This isn't a hack'n'slash game there is so much more out there to be explored just think about it and talk to the admins a little before creating your character's history. Even Johnny who is a self-proclaimed arse is generally willing to help if the question isn't too stupid.
