Tired of SPAM?

Who here gets unsolicited and much hated SPAM email. Raiser your hands…holy shit, that's a lot of hands.

See, how it often works is this:

1) You go to a website that has an online service for you, such as Amazon.com or Yahoo games. That sort of thing. You want to sign on, you have to fill out a form and submit your email address to them so they can talk to you. When you do this you are presented with a legal agreement, which often has a clause or refers to a clause that allows the service to 'share' or 'sell' your email address to other companies.

In order to sign on to the service you -HAVE- to -AGREE- to the legal statement, which often includes this referance to 'sharing' in it.

If you do not, you can not get the service.

2) You click yes.

3) You play games/shop online/look at porn.

4) You now get emails from these people and anyone they sell/share your address with.

Now. Here is the cool part. It is technically illegal for them to -FORCE- you to comply with that 'sharing' thing. It should, in fact, be a serperate agreement you enter into, seeing as your email address is part of your private home life, and part of your personal assets in a way. There is the potential for a VERY strong lawsuit that would FORCE this 'grouped clausing' to be seperated into options the user can select. You  legally should be given the choice to recieve or not recive emails from someone, or to share your email address.

I am proposing that people provide a first name and last name into a list, and that list will be used to present a class action suit of some sort to the international courts in order to -LEGALLY FORCE- companies on-line to give the user the -OPTION- of opting out of a 'shared email' situation.

Any takers? Let me know what you think.

*raises hand*

I have the un-enviable job of trying to stop, or at least reduce the amount of spam to my company.

When I checked yesterday, we had already blocked over 25,000 spams -this week- and I'd say that's maybe 10-15% of what we receive for a user base of about 3500.

I'm not sure of the legality of what you say, but what the hell, I'm in, as long as I don't have to give an e-mail address ;)

I've gotten to the point where I do one of two things …

1) list [email protected] for the email address

or

2) Use a -real- e-mail address that goes to a yahoo account that's full.

I got pretty tired of spam and just started singing up for things using my internet e-mail account.

The one through my isp I keep private or only use if I know the company isn't going to sell it.

It doesn't sound entirely plausible, but then again I've heard that in Florida you can pay like $10 and get yourself put on a list to never receive calls from telemarketers again.

I'm more concerned with certain spyware (such as Comet Cursor) which blatantly installs itself without your consent.

I wonder, if I don't sign a liscence agreement for this crap, does that mean I can do anything I damn well please with the software?

okay, lets just start a general revolution or protest or something.

VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

I get over 100 messages a day, less than 10 of which are not spam.

My mail software has gotten pretty good at flagging them as junk. Once it stops flagging SD players emails I'll turn it on agressive mode and it'll whack them before I see them.

And I -can't- change my email address :(

I have that problem with spam, as do we all. So I started signing up for things with an account that I use solely to receive spam. Hehe!

Anyway, I hate to play Devil's Advocate here but I have to point out one thing.

If that part of the terms of agreement was taken out, no one in their right mind would choose to receive spam. This being the case, large numbers of formerly free websites would start charging you big bucks to use them, since they would lose their advertising. The reason so much of web advertising is becoming a pain in the ass is that those sites are having trouble making enough money off their ads to stay free. I've already encountered several sites that are going subscription, and frankly, it bites.

Would freedom from spam be worth the cost?  Just curious what you think of that.  I'd like to think of a way for sites to make money without all the advertising.

Much more than spam what annoys me, ticks me off, chaps my hide -you get the idea - are those damn popup advertisement windows.

I swear I'm so tired of seeing five minute questionaires and things from casinos and travel agents that I could kick a…well I could kick something.

And yes, like Tylissa's player said about spam these too are ways for websites to make money. But everytime I go look at somebody's website and its located on a free server I get bombarded with these things. It drives me nuts. Always having to chase them down and close them. And you know if you close one another will just show up and yet if you don't close them they pile up until they're taking up your entire screen.

I'm getting annoyed just thinking about it.

Usually, when you have a real crapload of popups coming up, it's due to spyware (like Gator) installed on your system, buried in some license agreement for some piece of 'free' software.
If your browser is very unstable, that's probably the case.
So get AdAware….it's handy.
ugh. gator….. we got Kazza on our computer recently... and gator comes along with that.... *growl*

but yes adaware. get adaware.

go adaware!

*cough*

i've gone to using "fake" emails, one's i ONLY use for sites that need password verification and such or when communicating with tech support/ and other such helpfull things. or when an email addy will be displayed on a message board.... heh...
