Though a cyber limb with ones built in….mmmm...
As to weapons I've played with IRL. *BIG EVIL GRIN!* I've played with lots. Guns, Rifles, Bow's, Bokken, Shanai, Sword, Knife, Tanto, Fists, Kicks, Headbutts, blow-darts, nets (yes a net is a weapon you fools), shuriken, pencils, pens, erasers, sling-shot, pellet gun, paintball gun, broom, mop, mop bucket, pool-stick (or cue if you are in da know), hand-cuffs(not a weapon I know, but I can speed cuff ya in under 3 seconds.), string, kasari-fundo, Hanbo (3ft staff), 6 ft staff, 4 ft staff, in theory Yari (spear) and Naginata, straws from a slurpee cup, pottery, Kinder Toys, my car, a left boot, rope, Binder Twine...
I encourage everyone to go out and take a martial art or at least a gun saftey/training course. Ignorance is deadly stuff. And you might get to shoot a 9mm Glock like I did. BANG BANG BANG!
Yep go out and learn a good martial arts. I liked it. I just hated the pain I got from it.
Better yet, bullets.. fire a slug into somebody.. better be a slow moving one.. get it logged up in an organ or something, and the safely protected nano's get a nice warm wet home to munch on.. slooooow painful death.
You shoot it at someone and they get the equivalent to a wad of superglue spread across their body. It starts hardening and they'll have a helluva time attempting to maneuver their arms/legs/whatever.. worse yet.. it sticks to anything it touches.. sooo.. if you give the stickyfoam launcher enough force to knock a person to the ground, you may well have effectively immobilized the individual.
And another thing, where are the tasers and stunguns?
Mace even. Say ICly a player uses some on an opponent; said opponent is temporarily blinded by the chemical spray. OOCly it does the equivalent to neutralizing the look command for a determined amount of time depending on how many shots the target took, and maybe even neutralizes room/location descriptions until the effects wear off. Speaking of effects..perhaps the mace would wear off once the target has gained a health level or something.. maybe even used a mepak. Other factors might include whether or not any items the target holds on his person might aide in protecting his eyes.
Anyway, blah.. it's too early for this and I haven't slept since about 10-11a yesterday..
<<Tanaka Out>>
Maybe you could set your machines to dismantle the other machines. Heh...anyway.
I love the net idea Nic had. i think he also posted in the last board about a monofiliment net-launcher. Aim it across the front of the car and it'd carve a nice little grid into the front end, hehe...fun fun.
The neutron "dirty bomb." Scary thing is, these things are real. They don't go thermonuclear, but they throw out a helluvalot of radiation at fatal levels. One of these can irradiate/electronically deaden about 4-8 city blocks.
Now, onto more personal weapons. Fletchette grenades. Explodes and hurls a couple hundred aerodynamically friendly nanofilament projectiles out to a radius of about 12 feet. Works on principles similar to the flechette needle gun from ZMI.
And here's my hand to hand weapon of the day: the Buzzblade. Basically a knife with a blade that vibrates on the molecular level at just the right frequency to slice through flesh like softened Country Crock.
Ponders.. same principle as a vibrator?? Yak… >=(
You're all thinking (I think), spray someone, and if you hit them, they go "AHAHAAAAA I CAN'T SEEE!!!" There will be no one-hit weapons like that, just like a direct pistol shot through the head doesn't kill someone... it'd be way too unbalanced, all you'd have to do is successfully taser someone, then snap their neck, bypassing combat.
Any of these weapons will be just like any other combat weapons, except they wouldn't kill anyone, just knock them out (Like having @lethal turned off).
Any weapon we do release will -have- to be within a number of factors we consider for game balance. Eg, there has to be ways to counter it, if it has unusually powerful effects, there has to be unusually unpleasant side-effects or perhaps have an unnerving chance of it going off in your face...
Balance.
Non-lethals will come, but as Laz said, one factor we have to consider is the fact that players -WILL- abuse it to subdue an opponent then snap his/her neck. I like the sticky foam/net/glue gun idea, you're immobilized, but hey, if someone tries to snap your neck, they're pretty much immobilized too, being stuck to a corpse that isn't going anywhere...
And... don't forget, the way SD combat works, -everything- can be used in combat. I think it needs some tweaking, but give it a try, all objects can be wielded in combat. So, go ahead and whip someone to death with your jacket sleeve.
I mean, think about it… its got GREAT balance... you rip the hell outah anyone withing a 6 block radius while blowing the hell out of yourself in the process... there... balanced out. Whats more, you could leave yourself a note saying when and where, thus, you run and pick up all those goodies!
*ponders*
When you come with the logic for that, I'll give you serious explosives.
Bolos (rope with weighted ends to throw and wrap around legs)
Boom-a-rangs (once used for hunting, like in Roadwarrior, the little beast kid)
Throwing stars (ninja vanish!)
Throwing knives?
Spikes (or 'jacks' just throw em out behind ya and someone could step on em?)
Xenas circle thingy (or could just get a weaponsmith to modify a boom-a-rang
how about just generally just throwing objects and making them hurt???
Yeah think about that, the Fallout Shop selling "Build your own Bomb kits".
or a single shot pen gun.. kinda CIA-ish but hey, it's a good throwdown weapon.. and they're real too...
ooooh.. and I want the lager bottles to break once you crack them over someone's skull...
I'll say that stickyfoam launcher I was talking bout concerning nonlethals would be a single use weapon too...
-Anyway-....
Onto some serious considerations here.. Nexus ought to have streetgear out by now– I'm talkin about armour. We see ads for it on TV all day /long/.. and when we head over to Cordoba.. none, zilch, zip. So, let's move this discussion over to certain important issues involving the non-WJF populace of the Dome. How many different grades of armor could the common citizen obtain, what kind of legality codes would said armor have, and what kind of endurance/agility limitations would said armor impose on individuals? We've gotta talk this over folks, otherwise the only armor we'll be getting is a blood-stained, highly-noticeable, highly-TRACEable set of WJF armour that's been pried from the cold dead hands of a street judge.
Now.. I'm not talking about streetgear-grade, 2-minute-walk-to-the-corner-store-type armour when I quote the above prices, mind you. I'm talking heavy combat armour designed to take a shitload of hellfire and still protect the wearer, with a minimum amount of encumbrance and maximum mobility.

And not crap armor that only slows down bullets and never ever stops them.. realistic armor, would be very nice. In varying degrees, so of course the better the armor the more damage it can take before it gives way. And naturally armor wouldn't block some types of damage(a standard bulletproof vest isn't going to do jack to stop a knife, and it's not gonna do a whole lot against someone punching you), but mainly the kind it was designed for.
Meanwhile. As for powered armor.. I'm not sure twelve mil chyen is a realistic price for them. Then again I wouldn't really know, I haven't seen a suit around, and of course that stuff would be rare. Just keep in mind that 20 chyen is one dollar.. commercial prices might actually be higher or lower, depending on if they're mass-produced. To say nothing of black market prices.
Milspec armor is another matter. That stuff would be mass produced, but what you're paying for there is getting it off the black market or from the man whose truck a case of these things fell off of. And that man's price isn't gonna be cheap.
…then again, who wouldn't simply shoot him?...
(Edited by Azrael at 1:50 am on Mar. 28, 2001)
Anyway.. what I'm wondering is, would powered armor cost a little more than a nice house--say, 12 mil chyen-- or would the armor cost about as much as a Harrier-- around 100 mil chyen (which for all of you non-number cruncher's out there is around 5 million American dollars.) Personally, I think lower end mecha-- with all of the weapons and even -heavier- armor included in their production costs-- and higher end powered armor--with it's highly augmented capablilities (not even a dink when a ball of plasique goes of in front of it, modular weapon mods, etc., basically a mini-mecha) would be worth as much as a Harrier. To reiterate, lower end powered armour would give you all the good things about heavy personal armor without the penalties associated with it. Nonetheless, I wouldn't want to be stuck in powered armour when the batteries go dead -a la- Starship Troopers.
Besides... whats to stop someone from running up, standing under it, firing a few rounds into the gyro, engine, hydrolic valve, etc. That would turn it from walking golem, to standing golem. Add a nice frag grenade in the under belly (See reference: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back) and its like shooting fish ina barrel...
I'd rather have something like an infiltration suit... can stop low caliber shots... and increases speed/agility... while giving a boost to disguise and hide... What the hell, throw in thermo.
First off, those with explosive stat... read below.
I personally think a quick way to try and disable a mech is with explosives skill and a bit o explosives (TNT, C4, C6, etc.) They try and apply some to key areas, roll against thier stats, and they run like hell... then boom...
Second, have the mech respond to different damages. IE, arm aculator... that arm go bye bye!
head critical, pilot gets shot, mech disabled, etc.
Anyways, moving on... the whole system behind hydrolics is to push off of something... who gives a rats ass if metal can contract and expand... gotta have something to do that!
Right, anyways. If someone persay is wearing a shoulder holster with a BFG 10000 in it... and they don't want a Judge *coughs* *CASEY* *coughs* to see it, they can't be wearing it. As of now, anything worn can be seen even if its not on the outside and a piece of it is showing.... Wouldn't it be possible to tweak the coverage system so that things covered cannot be looked at either?
heh.. can envision it now…
Bruce [to You]: I'm sorry, there are no deliveries at this time.
say 'What? You ain't got no fuckin jobs? Take this, you gaddamn prick!'
attack bruce with cup
'In a fit of pique, you splash Bruce in the face with a scalding hot cup of steaming coffee, then toss the empty styrofoam container to the ground.'
… and everything goes downhill from there :P
Cool Ideas for weapons:
I've talked about this before: A gun that shoots balls of mono-filliment fibers. Slice. And. Dice. from a distance. Messy as hell though….
Cattle Prods. -nuff said
Knuckle Dusters.
Kasari Gama (a chain with weights on both ends)
Chains, with and without hooks on the ends.
The MX-93, a floating pod for WJF with twin 50 caliber guns on it.
Sticky Grenades - like those ones in the Fifth Element, that jab and stick to things. Like people.
Mono-Boomerangs. (Hmmm...maybe not...)
SHURIKEN!!!!!!!!! and Mono-edged Shuriken (throwing stars for those who need the translation)
...that's it for now. I'm tapped....
Ok Tanaka- they do have the spring loaded gun "holsters" for your forearms for bigger guns, I believe they go up to .45's, Now obviously a Desert Eagle .50 isn't going to just pop out of your sleeves. but I can't imagin the H&K 10mm's being much bigger than a gloc 9mm.
Luc, sounds like you're having @coverage problems:)
With armor in order to keep things "Balanced" or more balanced we would also need like Teflon coated bullets or some other type of armor peircing round....Black market I'd guess somewhere in the 50k+ chyen range???
And while we're on the topic of Bullets. What about body heat tracing rounds, rounds that a programmed with a specific persons "heat signature" (I forget what movie I saw that in). You would have to put a limit on those, a shooter on green wouldn't be able to find Judge Casey sitting at the Trix and nail him in the head.
Rubber bullets, breaching charges for WJF, umm, charged shields(taser shields), propelled Nets, that would be awsome, caltrops, those strips of nails that cops use to stop high speed chases.
oh oh oh!!! antique gun licenses, for collectors, :) that would be awsome, have a shop full of antique guns REAL .45s and 9s and like M16's and AK47s M1 grands and SKS assualts, and CANE GUNS!!!! and cigarette pack guns, and ring guns, SODA CAN GUNS.(wait Soda can guns?) but yeah that would be awsome!!!
I tired I wored 10 hours today I just wanna go home!
Now, if you want to get really into the weapons idea, try these...
First of all, for those who like to be stealthy... Ceramic or High Density plastic guns. Ranging from 9 - 12 mm. Small as hell, and weighs less then the average baseball. The only metal parts would be the firing pin, chamber, and bullets. These would also be great for those hidden ankle holsters that *COULD* have a chance of being missed in a frisk. (I think that is a good idea by the way...).
Next, those illegal laser and microwave weapons that are all over the history. Why not have a few laser pistols that could burn a hole through 3 feet of solid concrete, or be set to a level that stuns the target as a way of 'warning' them.
Finally, EMP Desruptors. You set these one use only babies off, and any gun, electronic device, or armor shuts down for a set time limit... You see that big hulking 10 Million Chyen Mech walking down the street? No problem... I got and EMP-D and a bag o' explosives.
Hehehehehehe, the evil mind of the devil at work...
(BTW, if any of you are bad... you will get to meet Luc in his element... Ruler of Hell!!!! *CACKLES*)
