Cyber Punk Anime

So I saw Ghost in the Shell for the first time last night, and for those who don;t know, it kicks ass.  It was filled with ideas for both rp and technology, and I think it should just about be required viewing for all domers.

Secondly, I want my Gundam.

Thirdly, whenever I figure out a useful was to carry and attack with three weapons, you must all fear Trigun
(ok, not really, but It'd be cool if I was, yeah, think about it)

YEAH! Or something.

Bubblegum Crisis
Dominion Tank Police
Riding Bean
Akira

and stuff…

It's been -way- too long since I watched any anime, I know I've seen a whole whack of cool CP themed stuffs... *mutter*

Good God you forgot Patlabor. COMEON! Hello! Shinohara Industries!?
*clears throat* Ahem…

M-66
Battle Angel Alita *eyes*
Cowboy Bebop ( i know it's space, but the character designs are sweet and CPish )
Trigun is definitely got the feel, 'post-apocalyptic' world (2nd earth).

Anyway...

Shit.. you think the anime are good.. you should read the manga for all of those titles.  Also.. even though it's not cyberpunk, I'd suggest watching Wings of Honeamise.. It's kind of like an anime version of that movie "The Right Stuff" that's set on another world.  For those interested in mecha, or rather, bio-mecha, I'd suggest watching the Neon Genesis Evangelion Series.

Oh and.. uh, Ghost in the Shell 2: Man Machine Interface (sorry movie-lovers, it's a manga) is out in serial format in Japan.. I only wish I could have gotten it while it was still in comic strip format in the Japanese magazine, Youth.. or was it Young?

Bio-mecha:

Guyver, the anime, not the movie with Mark Hamil

Damn.. forgot about that… and I'm sorry but mark hamil should have been shot for even -casting- the part of the Guyver.

Another horrible movie cum anime was Fist of the Northstar.. never should have created a live action version of that..

although.. I could see fist of the northstar being reminiscent of the Badlands surrounding Withmore.

I'd just like to punch someone and watch then CRACK!
Actually. they didn't crack.. they kinda burst in an explosive spray of blood and bone..

still kinda cool I guess but why not just stomp on them with a mecha?

Mecha! TOONAMI!

Gotta watch Big O when it comes out on the cartoon network… it look's soo cool.

They're catch line "Goodguys Still Wear Black"

Guyver sucks -ASS-… And I mean the anime one, I wouldn't even give the live action a trial viewing based on that garbage.
like the english have taste anyways

*snickers*

BLAHAHAHA… HA... HAHAHAHA....
*points*

WAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAaaaa*choke*ahahahahaa....

*gasps* *giggles*

WAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAaaaa.....

*snorts*
*wipes eyes*

I have nothing more to say....

*titters*
*goes to bed giggling*

You can all hate me now.

I love the live action Guyver. Both of them. (the movies)

mmm…B rated sci-fi...*DROOLS*

Um…I own 6 episodes of the Guyver Anime, and both the live action movies. If you ain't got any respect for the B movie...i ain't got any respect for you...

i bet you thought the godzilla movies were lame HA!~

I'd suggest both Serial Experiments: Lain (out there) and Key the Metal Idol (very freaky) as some good anim leads into subjects broached in the cyberpunk/Sindome universe.. one has to deal with what reality truly is as technology blurs its boundaries.. and the other deals with what it is to truly be human.  Both, I've found, are excellent series to watch.
Lain is just strange… but very alluring somehow, from the little I've seen. (like the first three episodes) And a warning to any who endeavor to watch Key..... its bizarrely addictive, despite being somehow very inaccessible. GUNNM (or battle angel alita) is excellent, I own the movie... Ghost in the Shell the movie is brilliant in its directorship, although the manga goes much more in-depth to the story, the world, and the characters, and has better artwork. (as manga are wont to have.) I wouldn't really class NG Evangelion as cyberpunk, but it deals with some aspects of bio-tech, and is hands-down my favorite anime series, ever. And for those of you who've seen the movie and hated it- ::mows them down with a tommy gun:: DIEEEE!! *cough* anyway.
Hmmm.. well.. Gun Dream was pretty good– for two episodes.. sadly Viz never went so far as to produce any others.. one has to collect the manga in order to reach the conclusion of the series-- which is well over seven books long and fairly expensive even in the English translation..  of course.. aren't all anim/manga expensive?

Another series I readily suggest watching is Dominion: Tank Police.. it's crazily fun but a must see for those who like tanks, cyberpunk, and evil cyborg motorcycle chicks who also happen to be twins ;)

Anyone that -doesn't- worship Akira: eat donkey dung.
Anyone that likes dubbed over subbed: eat monkey poo.
The list goes on, but I'll spare you all. In essence: BGC 2040, Akira, GitS, and a few trivial other anime's that are refusing to come to my mind rock my socks. Power to the anime people! And by the way… *cough* hentai *cough*. Huh?? Oh, hey mom!
hentai…

skateboards...

dragons...

...there goes the MOO... alas poor Sindome, I knew thee well.

…say the word and Nic will arange his murder...

*chuckle*

The day I see hentai on a MOO, will be the day that I am actually surprised. It would be quite interesting to see hentai in ASCII text format.. And if I ever saw dragons on a CP MOO other than Shadow… I'd be pissed. So... That leaves skateboards. The horror!

to Nic:
'the word'

*looks around quickly*

ha ha haha! *splat* damnit...

*blinks*
Dragons on CP M*'s… you said CP MOO, but making the distinction beteen MOO and other M*'s is kinda dubious... Shadowrun MUCK/MUSH/whatever the hell it is... I suspect has Dragons. I know of at least on other, but I forget the name of it... Dragons and the typical fantasy fair in a CP/post holocaust setting...
Oh bummer. And here I thought my dragons were entirely out of place. Shadowrun… Perhaps I should find the addy for them, cause I hear much talk of their little game.
How in the world did I forget to mention anything about Lain under this topic?! How?! It's unthinkable! Unmentionable! The terror! The idea: LAIN RULES. If you haven't seen it, watch it. Then you'll know why I named my computer Navi. Not that it really matters… But, just watch the movie. 13 total I believe.
Chant, if you don't go down to your local comic/D&D/Magic: The Gathering shop and pick up the following, I will give Nic the word:

  • Cyberpunk 2020 (2nd or 3rd edition rules)
  • Shadowrun 3rd Edition
  • William Gibson's Neuromancer (try a bookstore for this)

If you don't know about shadowrun and you're running shadowMOO, well lets just say that'd be so damn wrong.

Hentai?  Hmmmm.. I've heard Urotsukidoji is an interesting one.. has what 12 volumes?
or if you are a cheep ass bastard you could go to the Javatrix and read it there. as i am doing. slowly…
*cackles at Johnny*

Believe it or not, before I even managed to get back to the boards to see what people had picked at from my last posts, I had already gone to the bookstore and picked up Neuromancer. I must say, it's FUCKING AMAZING. I love the book intensly. I think I'll make love to it. Or not. But I am sure to 'borrow' some of the things/names in there for Shadow. I don't think Upland California /has/ a comic book store, and if it did, I probably would never find it. CP 2020 is a Battletech-style tabletop game right? I'm running ShadowMOO as… well, not as a different solution to whatever ShadowRun is. The theme, everything in it is original except for a few borrowed names from elseMOOs. All the code is original, etc. So.. having a game called ShadowMOO should not be all that repulsive, given the fact that I don't know shit about SR. And for someone that's never even borrowed checking out Shadow, you certainly know how to tell me a lot about it. =P

I think I am with Nic and Johnny in their assumptions that ShadowMOO was the offshoot of Shadowrun.  Since I find that Sindome seems to be able to take up all of my available spare (computer) time, I've neer checked out the rest.  Thus, Nic and Johnny persecute you.

Next issue, Neuromancer is fantastic…but then there's Snowcrash.  You must read both.

How can you go along with someone's assumptions when you've never check it out??? That doesn't make much sense, unless you mean you're just trusting their judgement. What's ShadowRun like anyway? I don't think people even know what ShadowMOO's basic theme is… mercenary squads? blood-thirsty companies? Also, I couldn't seem to find Snowcrash anywhere at B&N, which is where I picked up Neuromancer yesterday. Is it written by a foreign author?
Good god no, Snowcrash was written by Neal Stephenson, he lives somewhere in the Pacific NW, I think reasonably close to Portland (if he should happen to read this feel free to email me at the address the post where I give it.)  They should have it in softbound, probebly in the fantasy section, since B&N doesn;t understand that Snowcrash is THE cyberpunk novel.  Also, wanna really have some fun, go to yahoo, and search for it, and then read any of the vast assortment of term projects/masters theses written about it.  Some of them are quite interesting.

I think I just might end up doing that. Also, I knew Neal Stephenson wrote the book… Otherwise I would've been looking for a long time, cause they do it by Author at B&N. Still, it's hard to imagine any CP novel topping Neuromancer. And I haven't even finished the book.
Not anime, but you are getting it anyway:

Empty Zone. Great comic. Hardcore CP. IN trade paperback and can occasionally be found in comic form.

Little White Mouse. Little CP. Great stuff.

Chant, as for finding those RPG rule books, they can be found online… hell, Amazon's probably got them.

You know... I even saw a CP rule book in an Airforce Base Exchange (Misawa AB, Japan)... they had that, maybe a rule book or two for another game, and a shitload of D&D. Not a place I would've ever thought to see RPG rulebooks... but hey, I guess they got overwhelmed with requests, as I'm sure they weren't available off-base (unless they've been translated into Japanese).

You can usually order them from standard book stores... check the company's web site, get the ISBN number for the book, and take that to the store... they're almost sure to have a distribtor that carries them, even if the store doesn't stock them. This is really only necessary if you don't have a credit card (meaning you can't order online).

That's for future reference... here's some info on Cyberpunk and Shadowrun...

R. Talsorian Games, Inc.

  • The maker of the Cyberpunk RPG.
  • Books sold on site.
  • Lists ISBN's (if you don't have a credit card, and have to order through a book store).

FASA Corporation
  • The maker of the Shadowrun RPG.
  • Books sold on site.
  • Lists ISBN's.
  • There is a notice that they will stop selling books online (except I think out-of-print books that they're trying to get rid of, until they're gone too). That will take effect July 31, 2001, but they will probably still list products/ISBN's after that.

There ya go, no more excuses about not being able to find them.

Twas my understanding that the FASA corporation was no more, eaten by the evil Lizards of the Toast or some such, ne'er to be seen again.

R Tal's CP2020 is currently out of print and pretty damned difficult to get hold of, at least here in Canuckiland. The -LOOooooooooOOONG- awaited 3rd edition is -supposedly- close to seeing print, but then again we've been hearing that for the last 5 years at least.

Finally, I challenge anyone to locate a copy of the rare and incredibly valued Aliens RPG. After a long fought war to get it into print a single print run made the shelves before a copyright dispute hurled it into an early grave.

*ahem*

*flips through his copy of ShadowRun*

Lots of shadow run around. Bet I can track down a CP2020.

*cough*

Heh.. I found an old copy of  Shadowrun 2020 at a B&N.. in their used books section.. Almost bought it, then realized I was out of cash.
And to get back on TOPIC.. Akira is finally getting an official release on video/DVD.. that is, an -official- release… and if that isn't CP, then I'm an imploded chicken.

From my understanding, it's coming out sometime this month or in August.

My god I can't belive I didn't say this before:

APPLESEED by Masamune Shirow!!

Very VERY VERY Cool. Cyberpunk, Mech, cyborgs!
