Movie

Johnny Mneumonic is on right now on the TBS Superstation on cable. I'm not sure why I'm tellin you alll, but oh well.
Yeah… it's too bad it sucked. Not as bad as New Rose Hotel fortunately.

Oh well. Hopefully no one will ever get the bright idea to try and do Neuromancer.

And please, don't point me at the efforts contrary to my hopes. I know they exist, and hope they never see the light of day.

-Kevlar

Hmm…never seen New Rose Hotel (the movie...not the hotel).

What about Bladerunner? That was on Sci-Fi a couple weeks ago. What are your thoughts on -that-?

No one has to listen to me.

Bladerunner, Director's Cut (with the unicorn daydream, no voice over, no stupid ending), Widescreen DVD.

Best Cyberpunk Movie Ever.

Ever.

If you havn't seen the Director's Cut, and you havn't understood the significance of the unicorn, you havn't realized the depth of the film.

-Kevlar

Actually, New Rose Hotel wasn't inherently -bad-. The screenplay writing was solid, the acting was perfect - it was just very badly edited. That bit with Daniel Dafoe in the coffin should have been at the FUCKIGN START like in the short so people would know what's going on without memorizing the damn story.

Christopher Walken is coming for your soul!

Then I guess I haven't realized the depth of the film then cuz I've only seen it on TV and video. No DVD.

Is it really -that- different?

No, dude. It's wasn't badly 'edited'.

It was pieced together by a team of trained monkies (at least the last 45 minutes were) who were tripping on acid for the first time.

-Kevlar

Yes, Kain, it's completely different. If you haven't seen it, I won't spoil it for you - but I think the dream and Gaff's origami is plenty obvious.

Gaff r r0x.

I got to see it in a theatre, the Director's cut ;)

I love repertory cinema.

Is it really -that- different?

Yes.

The main charcater isn't just an anti-hero. He's much more, and the unicorn is the key.

Without the unicorn daydream, the origami is almost completely pointless, and dosn't give you the necessary clue to figgure out the truth, in which the REAL bitter irony lies.

The studio was afraid the audience wouldn't 'get it'. So they had Harrison Ford do a voice over and 'walk the viewer through the movie', removed the unicorn daydream because they 'didn't get it', and tacked on this terrible stupid scene with them driving past a white picket fence with grass behind it at the end.

Grass?! GRASS?!?!?!

What the FUCK is grass doing here?

-Kevlar

Depends if you saw the director's cut on TV. The wide screen version -is- more visually appealling, the director's cut version helps you see it in a whole new light.

Good night … MOON, good night ... SPOON. Schuch closer children. Make with the Schuching.

I love when he reads bedtime stories too. So very very creepy.

And don't get me started on his dance stylings. :mirrorshades:

Whose? Gaff's, Harrison Ford's, or Christopher Walken's?

The Weapon of Choice video singlehandedly made me respect Fatboy Slim.

EDIT: My typing blows today, I blame it on the summer solstice.

(Edited by Murphy at 1:34 am on June 22, 2003)

The Weapon of Choice video was great. It was insane. Christopher Walken was like bustin a move man. Then he started flyin around. I felt like I was stoned watching tv. It was so cool. That also made me respect Fatboy Slim.
Fatboy Slim rocks, NuMetal or whatever people.

Erm wasn't the ending to Blade Runner ripped from the shining? A very sad example of producer power especially when they have access to a very different film.
I havn't even seen either version yet!
It's very hard to get here, but I found a store that I can order it from, and it's cheaper from there than from Amazon!
…I've read that it even looks tacked on, with the colours. lighting, camera work all very diferent....and probably with no film noire element at all.

*shrugs*
It's all meant to be okay now *sighs with relief*

Just somebody tell me why both versions can't be put on a decently cleaned up dvd?

oki. …

i really really really -should- watch blade runner now, shouldn't i? *blush*

www.avalon-movie.com

Without question one of the greatest cyberpunk films ever.  I had the luxury of seeing it in an art house in Edinburgh, I've never seen it playing anywhere else, so you'll have to search for it.  Not on DVD in the US yet.

weird haven't posted since 2001, crazy.

Twice in the same day, amazing.

Avalon will be available, Region 1, December 16th, via Amazon.

Fuckin sweet! If you've not seen the trailer for this, you've got no idea what your missing.

I heard about this a while back, but have been unable to get my grubby hands on a copy. Rest assured I'll be preordering this one.

[Update] Amazon and 1-click shopping are your friend.

Avalonnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
I swear I posted about this movie before, I must have - it's my werry werry favoritist movie ever. I even did this one art thing on it that my teacher hated but i liked because she hated it.
muah.
*hyperhyperhyper*STOP.

So cool.
There really is a world out there that watches movies I watch.
But wtf…I know it's been a while since I saw Blade Runner but I seriously don't remember any of this stuff. Guess that's gonna be what I buy this weekend.
Anyone seen eXistenZ?

I actually had the option of watching New Rose once, but I figured everyone else in the place wouldn't get it....so instead we watched this movie about a funky alien made out a garbage bag with big floppy feet as it chased this old astronaut guy around a cheesy spaceship set. It was funny as hell, but somehow...highly disturbing. Maybe I just didn't get it...like Akira. It was called 'Dark Star' and was the first of director John Carpenter's movies, I believe. He went on to produce "Halloween", "Vampires"...and a buncha other stuff which I've never seen.

Mmmkay.

ExistenZ…wow...

I saw that movie a few weeks back. What a fucked up, but extremely awesomely interestingly stimulatingly cool movie...I mean, wow...

No, but really. That type of virtual reality would kick. But yeah, Lena. To answer your question...I have seen it.

It seems like there are a few movies like that by this director that never make it to the US.

Anyone seen Red Spectacles

Just curious.

-SM

Oshii again….Hmm.

Wel, either Red Spectacles is set in the same world/time frame as Jin Roh, or Oshii liked the armor on the cover of that DVD (see Monk's link) so much he used in both movies.

I love it when things come together like that, though...
When authors or directors seem to recycle their most beloved characters or concepts and use them throughout their works.
Like Gibson's lead characters and how they always seem to be involved in the 'nodal points' which his stories describe.
Meh!

Armor good...and I still say it looks like the suits in the Final Fantasy movie, with glowing eyes and all.

<you're just a waste of space!> <Uh-uh-uhhhhh!>
Q3 withdrawl...ummm...yea.
