Chyen

Ok so chyen is all coins, no bills?  What are the denominations?
I think its bills too.  For larger ammounts?  I dunno.
Just said that cause every time I look at it on the ground It says coins.
Though I would imagine there would be bills.
Heh. that's funny. I always thought it was bills, and no coins.

You pull out your wad of chyen and count it.

Can you really have a "wad" of coins? Hmm…makes ya wonder.

*runs off to blame the government with Iga*

A pile of the city's currency, the smallish coin known as chyen

It says coin.. And no matter how much I drop. That kinda changes the way I see some things.. No wonder wallets rip when you put too much chyen in them. :-P

Yeah, it says coins but they're really bills. That's just a very old message. No one would really carry around that much metal, let alone issue it when the cost of issuing paper is so much cheaper.

The way I've always envisioned it, and this has been very well accepted by everyone:

Corperate issued script. A virtual confetti of corperate logos and bills of all varying denominations. Corperations would issue their empoyees their own script, but in a store or basically anywhere on red you'll find a sampling of just about every corperation in Withmore. It's all just paper, and worth less than the paper it's printed on. Just like an american dollar. The only thing that gives it any value is the agreement by all businesses to use it as their common form of currency, and to accept it as a promisary note for all debts, private and public. Just like an american dollar.

I frequently emote my money in conjunction with paying people.

pay 100 to rycheck
emote slaps a crisp bill with the ZMI logo on the bar, and slides it across to Rycheck with one finger, "Keep the change".

-Kevlar

I always assumed bill, too.. But the corporate script you speak of is something completely new.

I'll have to incorporate it into my RP, I love it.

Sweet.  So all corporations could have different-looking bills?

That's really cool.

Not -all-. Just the important ones that are part of the council. Big players like Skywatch, NLM, Genetek, etc.
So is Chyen only used in Withmore, or is it a more widely used currency?

I mean, it's kinda hard for someone to trade on a multi-national level with currency that's only recognised in one city.

Is it based on a gold standard? and if so, does that mean there's a stash of gold somewhere that I can steal? :)

Only in Withmore.

There's conversion rates (check the Welcome node on the Grid) and currency exchange terminals, but as we don't have use for them ICly, you won't find them in the game. Just RP it.

As for the rest, find out IC.

-Kevlar

Hmm, it would be nice if you could look at a pile of chyen and see how much chyen is actually in the pile.
Like you look at a stack of dollars and know how much it is?
Well, I can look in a wallet (in game) and know how much is i there.  But that aside, doesn't have to be exact.  But if there is a pile of about 100 or 1000 chyen, I'm gonna have at least some clue of how big it is.
there would be a big difference between a pile of 50 chyen and a pile of 50k chyen….
there would be a big difference between a pile of 50 chyen and a pile of 50k chyen….

Oh really?

A stack of 50 1 chyen bills looks different than a stack of 50 1000 chyen bills? Perhaps you could see the top bill, but that would be about it…

-Kevlar

It -could- benefit from some proportionate logic. But I'd add in the estimation system if it's on a look, which means you could be quite a ways off, but it'd be good enough, I'm sure.
Maybe link it to the trading skill.  People with a high skill would probably have more of a feel for money, the different colors and for guessing stack size.
which still leaves an unanswered question?  What are the bill denominations?
I've always RP'd a 50 chyen, and 100 chyen denomination.  I would assume there would be a 1 chyen bill.  It might even be helpful to have a 2 chyen bill considering the low value of a single chyen.  That way you could skip the 5 chyen note, and go right to 10.  Then 20.  50.  100.  500. 1000. 5000?
How do I get my face on that bad boy? Right next to the Saedor Krupp Logo!
It's probably made with a special ink too.  That way it would be harder to counterfit.

… Counterfit.. Mmm...

*goes off to find some 5000c mold plates*

I would assume we go to the 1:20 ratio we see with American currency, where 1 American dollar, future standard value, is equivalent to 20 chyen.  Well, that's how I've always equivocated pricing in game.

*is a dork for doing conversions to actually see what something would be worth IRL, but, who knows?*

Anyways:

1 dollar = 20 chyen
5 dollars = 100 chyen
10 dollars = 200 chyen
20 dollars = 400 chyen
100 dollars = 2000 chyen

Or, we could go with a system I noticed in the Ghost In The Shell series, where paper currency is an archaic, but still used system where the currency value of the fiat is printed directly onto the bills, along with serial numbers and digital signatures for every piece of fiat produced, linked to credit from a particular banking or financial institution.  Essentially, any denomination could exist.

Oh, and to point something out, Kevlar's vision of the banking system is very reminiscent of the pre-Maoist, pre-WWII invasion banking days of China, where every lending institution had its own currency.  This idea even goes back further, and has had a place in almost every developing nation's economy, including that of the US.

Just a wads, coins, cred, and hard script in the bank,

Grim

$1 = 20 chyen does make pretty good sense. My favorite unit of measurement, a Holden, would then be worth 37 grand. Hardly a high end luxury car, but quality all the same.

My chars salary makes sense too by this measure.
