so i've been told there once was a library.. in the dawn of time when people roamed the badlands and taxis parked on street corners.. and the park had canibals…and what not... etc... the good old days before us.
i've read a few threads mentioning the library and education in the dome in general...
so my wondering goes something like this... why was it removed? how was it being abused? (since i'm thinking it had something to do with that?) are there plans to restuff a library of sorts into the fibers of the game? (yes i know there's a miles long list of projects and code....)

It goes something like this…
A long, long time ago
In the days of the XM messege systems,
Long before Devon and Lucifer were Godlike powers,
There was a library.
This library was located on the northwest corner of gold,
and unlike previous generations was not ignored.
Many people(before god like powers) spent hours 'study'ing.
After studying for awhile one could gain experiance in different skilled areas.
This is basically how it was being abused (i think).
Right now no one leaves their cubes (or heaven) to find RP.
Back then no one left the library to RP.
My mind is a little fuzzy on this, but it was before mag-levs, and some of this other non sense, but that is how it was. And that is how we created super god like characters (luc, nic and devon).
P.S. I'm gonna reamed for most of what I just said.

It was on Green actually.
And abused quite badly.

Umm no, I remember i could show you on Gold where it was. I remember it sooooo well.
NW corner of gold the second 'block' west of the intersection was the clone place, the bank still were it is. The library was either the second or third 'block' east of that intersection

Excellent graphic, Dom.. though I haven't the foggiest idea about where or what this library was, I think it'd be cool to have one. I don't care if it can increase skills or not. It'd just be cool to have a place to look up information. Info on corporations, the way the government works in SD. Heck, it'd be a good place to put a complete book of law, too. Hm.. didn't someone code a version of Neuromancer?.. maybe they never finished. But if they did/do, the library would be the perfect place to put it. Hell, they could let you read books there, or sell them to you, or lend them to you.. maybe it'd cost to get a membership to it or something. Could be managed like SIC. Check out (or buy, or read there, depending on how you want it to work) so many books, pay this amount of money via a terminal somewhere. I think it'd be neat as hell.

You know, the more I think about this, the more I like the idea of a library that's just there.
No skill increases, nothing like that, just an IC place you can go and have access to info.
If you're working on certain new skills, that's a good place to start …
Reference material, corporation lists ...
Just seems like it'd be a good place for IC reasons.

A place to get info would be handy indeed - but I find myself wondering why, in 2088, there would be a library with paper books. You have any idea what a pain in the ass it is to search through a large library for a particular book? Why would this inconvenience be perpetuated in a disposable future? Aren't paper book collections for the rich and richer?
Then, I'm suddenly reminded of the Esper terminals in BladeRunner, which Deckard uses to analyze photos, and which Bryant uses to look up incept dates.
Wouldn't that make more IC sense? A 'library' full of terminals? Maybe even very expensive (50k+?) ones you could install at home, like the VR phones?
Maybe even make the data web-based like quickterms, as to not increase MOO DB size and leaving the possibility of anyone with notepad to write up a few info pages for it (pending approval, of course).
Just a thought.

I mostly agree with Murphy.
I accualy had an idea at one point that I got while watching the movie AI. (Remember Dr. Know?)
The problem with it is it requires a lot of GM support, and that's in VERY short supply.

That's wrong Dom… once again.
That map is correct, but on Green not Gold. It could not have ever been there on Gold, because that's where the WHJ is. Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids.

And you could check out books from the libary of terminals by putting them on disks. Then you could take um back to your home computing device and read them there. I really like this idea though.

Why put them on disks at all?
Libraries, in the real world, exist for people who do not have space/money for a bazillion books.
If these books were all in electronic format, and you can afford a terminal at home to read disks on on the first place, then space/money is no longer an issue, and you could just access them directly from your terminal at home - possibly for a fee. Just like…say......let's see if I can find a real-world example for this.....hm......very difficult.......Aha! The internet.
For a bunch of cyberpunks y'all sure like having your data on physical objects a whole lot.

But then you have people sitting in their cubes looking at stuff instead of going to the library where they could meet people and talk to them. I realize when the matrix comes out, you can talk to people on there too. I still think it'd be cool to have an actual place to go.

Not if these terminals are expensive enough that people who have to live in cubes can't afford them.
And even moreso that they'd have to be installed (as VR phones).
Look at it this way - 1000c = ~50 USD
Let's say this terminal would go for the equivalent of ~2000 USD, which would come to 40Kc. You gonna spend 40Kc on something you don't really need? Not unless you're loaded. People who are loaded have the prerogative to stay in their apartments doing nothing if they so choose.

I still swear it is on gold…
But I i like i dunno whose idea of having one as a good place to start building stats. Not have it actually give any AE, but have a good IC way to learn corpse cutting, gunsmithing, blah blah blah.
And i know it is gold...besides that is a kick ass graphic.

FS is right… and Dom isn't wrong.
The library was initially built on gold, until someone pointed out it couldn't actually be where it was since it'd be hovering in mid-air over Red, and moved it to Green. It was probably only on gold for a couple of days at the most... it was moved to green... it was horribly abused... it was removed.
For the record, you could 'study' three times a day, gaining a 1 UE directly allocated to a skill at each study. On the plus side, it did get the UE whores, who log in three times a day to type '@who', '@quit', out of their coffins... to go to the library and type 'study' three times before returning home to '@quit'...
Those who remember Improvisar might be interested to know he was SD's single most UE loaded character ever in his time, thanks to the above technique. He's also the person who can be credited for the existence of the idle kicker thanks to his admin-rivalling 2-3 day idle times...
I'd hazard a guess that only two characters remain alive who's stats were touched by the library...
