More Slang than you can handle, chum

So, Firestorm and I were sitting watching the players yammering away to each other on SIC and various other com channels, and we noticed that the word 'yo' was being used a lot. This was greatly upsetting to Firestorm, and to myself. Not because the term 'yo' is intrinsically out of theme, but because people have not bothered to use the dozens of other terms other than 'yo' that you can, and SHOULD be using.

So. To help you all get a little more into the CP theme, I am yet again posting links to Cyberpunk Slang terms, so you, and us staff, can all work to get these terms into the game, into our heads, and into our hearts.

Why, the other day I called a colleague of mine chummer. That is dedication to the bit, when you take the CP right on off the MOO.

Feel free to attempt to add your own lingo into the mix, who knows, it may catch on. Mano and Chummer did.

Okay this has been bugging me for a while now but how do we know what the theme is? How do we know what kind of slang might be popular. I m not saying that people should use only 'yo' but that what is the theme I must not be clear on that or I am just really tired and need a cup of coffee.

I have not used the word 'Yo' ICly once since you made that first post. I am very proud.

I do like the idea that someone brought up.. Iga I think it was you.. about having the @who display a diffrent CP word everytime you use it. I think that would get the flow of CP words going strong.

a) I don't think there are any essential flaws with using 'yo' except that it starts to take the place of…everything. And is the gateway word to sounding like gangster...not a ganger.

b) It just stopped working one day, I kinda like not being able to see who's on anyway so I told admin not to bother.

I'd like to use some of the military slang used in here, but I wonder if anyone else playing a military char would understand.
Like, say I got some ex special forces turned hitman guy meeting with what he thinks is the runner bringing him his breifcase full of money, and turns out to be an ex special forces turned hitman character paid to kill the other ex special forces turned hitman character, and your char radio's/SIC's to your Sniper who has been watching your back the entire time that it's an Alpha Bravo (Ambush), and your sniper is all like huh?

So, I've been keeping a list of the phrases and words that I like the most, so I can refrence them without going to the sites to remember exactly what they mean, and to have something to look at when I'm havin' a conversation.. these are from the four sites that Iga posted, as well as some of the slang that I have heard ICly, and some that I made up.

I figured I'd post it here, maybe it will come in useful to some people.

Baka - (Spanish) Fool

BAKUTO - (jap) Gambler.

Pony n. A low-level streetdealer, lower on the social scale than a Fixer. (Origin: from a pony's ability to carry, but possibly also from London slang: pony = 20 pounds(�); ponies very rarely sell expensive items.)

BLEEDER - An extortionist.

BOPPER - A hitman.

Thirdman - Slang for Fixer.

Gato - A smooth operator, cool person; a Fixer.

Faceman: a sub-fixer in the employ of a major fixer, supporting that superiors network.

BUTTON MAN - Someone who selects or points out the job.

Buck Rogers - ph. Derogatory phrase for an individual (usually a Solo) obsessed with high-tech weaponry.

Bullet-Stopper - ph. A bodyguard (See Guardian Angel.)

Bushi - n. (Jap) Honor or Code of Honor. A key concept for most edgerunners (q.v.), as they

frequently have little else to call their own at times.

CAIN - A traitor, a backstabber.

CHIV - Knife.

Choombaka - (Derived from Choombata) Used to mock someone in a somewhat subtle way, Meaning fool/idiot.

Cement poisoning - ph. What a person dies of after being pushed off of a multi-story building

and hitting the sidewalk. Also known as deceleration trauma.

Chinese Take-out - ph. Anything extremely jumbled or messy. (e.g. "That riotgun made his chest look like Chinese take-out.").

COLD TEA - Alcohol.

CREASED - Killed.

HEAD HUNTER - A female who does sexual acts for drugs.

KURUMAKU - (jap) Literally, black curtain, a term from traditional Kabuki theater. Now used to denote a behind-the-scenes fixer, godfather, or powerbroker.

MATCHBOX - A sleep cube or coffin.

DELTA'D - To make maximum speed towards a place.

DIAMOND SEASON - Warm weather.

DIP - A pickpocket.

MR. JOHNSON - Refers to any anonymous employer or corporate agent.

DIRTY - To possess drugs or be under the influence.

CHIMPIRA - (jap) Derived from the Japanese word for "penis"; it is used on the street as Americans might use the word "prick".

Bac bac n. (Viet.) Bastardized Vietnamese for "To shoot."

SO KA - (jap) I understand.

Badge:
n. Police or corporate security.

Bagged and Tagged:
ph. To die.

SOLAR WIND - Hot air, ie, something that is pretty much bullshit.

Twitch:
n. A careless, scatterbrained, or otherwise unreliable individual.

Leak in the brain:
ph. Gun shot, or blunt trama to the head. (Eg. I left him with a leak in his brain.)

Seperation Trama:
ph. The act of removing someones head from there body. (E.g. He got a bad case of seperation trama.)

Candy
verb. A person that is afraid, or backs down. Verb. A sweet person.

Chrome - n. 1) Flash, glitter, bells and whistles, tinsel. Material used to spice up the appearance of something. 2) Sexy features on a program, not needed for functionality but radiating style (e.g. a guillotine instead of a trash can icon). 3) Generic reference to cyberware.

Cowboy - n. A very hot, professional deckjockey.

Deceleration trauma - ph. See Cement poisoning.

Doughboy/girl - n. Derogatory term for someone wearing too much body armor.

Draga - adj. (Hungarian) Expensive.

Ferryman - n. Term for an expert assassin. Believed to be derived from the famed Eurosolo Charon, who took his handle from the figure in Greek mythology who ferried the dead across the river Styx to Hades.

Flash - 1) v. Anything spectacular (e.g. "That deck has a lot of flash!") 2) n. Hard currency (e.g. "Loan me some flash.") 3) adj. To move quickly. (e.g. "Lets flash to your coffin real quick and grab that.")

Fodder - n. A derogatory term fixers use for solos.Gaijin - n. (Jap.) A derogatory term for a foreigner or outsider.

Gaijin - n. (Jap.) A derogatory term for a foreigner or outsider.

GoTo - n. A dossier, usually illegally compiled

Hurt when it rains
ph. Someone that has metal left in there body from sharpnel or gunfire, or plates from surgery that ache during or before a storm. (IE: I ain't gunna kill you, but when I'm through your gunna hurt when it rains.)

ACE KOOL - (gang) Best friend. Back-up.

Paydata - n. Datafile worth money on the black market.

Ronin - n. A freelance assassin or mercenary. Usually considered to be untrustworthy. 2) A masterless samauri.

Sarariman - n. (Jap.) A corporate employee.

Shirt - n. A white-collar worker, usually a low level corporate employee.

Skirt - n. An ordinary (defenseless) person (male or female.)

Smudge - n. Pronunciation of the acronym SMG (SubMachineGun); thus, a submachinegun.

Solo - n. A mercenary who works the streets. A `for-hire' combat specialist. Used as bodyguards, assassins, and soldiers, individually or in groups.

Splash - v. To shoot down. E.g. to splash an idea, or "Splash that bastard!"

Splat job - n. A dead body, usually messy. Also sometimes used to describe a person (or persons) who are `cannon fodder' and are not expected to live much longer.

Wiz - v. Very impressive.

Blade - n. 1) A professional soldier or fighter, specializing in edged weapons. 2) A surgeon or doctor

Nemisis' shortened list is helpful, but I still find that I am a bit overwhelmed by the laundry list format of these terms. I like the idea of having random words show up on @who, or some other place, so that we can slowly begin making use of them.

What would be really great is a categorized list of words specific to certain groups of SD, such as Military, WJF, Medical, Corporate, Mixer…and even get into certain sub-categories, such as Sinner slang vs. Arteries slang.

I think this could be tied into the work permits, since every woking group could have their own slang vocab. Of course, it would help for us to immerse ourselves in the current slang first, so I am talking long term.

My favorite slang experience was with the book, "A clockwork Orange". My copy had a glossary in the back, but I think the original didn't. Almost half the words were slang, and it was impossible to understand. But by the time I was half way through the book, I was speaking in slang to a friend of mine who was also reading the book.

Maybe accuracy isn't important for the late 21st century, but in any case… some notes on the "japanese"

"baka" is Japanese for stupid, or an idiot. Spanish too? I didn't know that.

Bakuto.. Ok, correct, but more commonly, "Bakuchi-uchi"

"Bushi" - Bushi is not a code, but the same as samurai. As in, "a bushi" = more or less "a samurai" (Person).. the code itself is "Bushido" as in "Bushi + do (path)" .. the way of Bushi...

Chimpira = Not a accurate description, the word is derogatory, but its more commonly associated with "thug", "punk"... and when you say "chimpira yakuza" it's basically a low-level street punk or wannabe.

"So ka" = "sou ka"... = "I see.." , "Is that so.."

Gaijin = NOT derogatory in meaning, but like any other word may be derogatory in use, like the English "foreigner", though for some reason most people think so. French for foreign = etranger, Japanese for foreign country = "Gai (outside) - Koku (country). So, "gaijin" = Gai (outside) + jin (person), i.e. "foreigner".

Just a few more words and phrases I've come across that made an impression…

Paper Suit - The cheap paper clothing given to immigrents, new clones, and anyone in a quarintine.

Pink Mist - Whats left of a person after a bomb or fragmentation grenade goes off at clsoe range.

Bloody Rain - Whats left of a person when a bomb goes off at a medium range.

Jakes - Slang for Police.

Mix Walker - 1. Someone in a slightly above average standing in the mix. 2. A street hustler. (Up for discussion, the exact meaning)

Shadow Walker - A bad ass chummer, usualy one that prefers to strike at the time of their choosing, many times without warning.
