WHO WANTS TO MAKE MONEY!!!???

OK OK. So we've heard that there are some Players out there that are a bit flustered on the money situation. The argument goes something like this:

No one buys stuff (services/gear/etc.) because no one has money, and no one has money cuz there are no jobs out there.

And there are three ways people deal with it. 1) They either RP it out and find work somehow either through a lead or know someone. 2) They MAKE themselves a job or 3) They ask admin OOCly "I WANT A JOB! HOW DO I GET ONE!?"

Now I'll tell you right now, the 3rd one's not going to get you anywhere unless we're in a REAL good mood. There are a gazillion jobs out there. We keep telling people they need to work things out ICly…because believe it or not...things in the IC world work out similarly to things In Real Life. How do you think people in real life get jobs? Do you think people just hand them to 'em? (well ok in some instances yes...but that's a low percentage).

But seeing as we admin WANT people to make money, without it being handed to them we've created some jobs that some of you know about.
********************************

SHI - 100c/hour…about minimum wage IRL. i said ABOUT

Burnt Cow - One player works here and soon it'll be open for more.

Withmore Wholesale a.k.a Bruce run's - Package delivery - GREAT way to learn your way around, not to mention that you're restocking stores with goods that they may be out of.

Withmore Justice Force - Judge, Ops, etc.

NLM - reporter, newscaster, etc.

Bartender - Carnal, Drome, Grunens

City Services - corpse/garbage cleanup

Fixer - Get items from contacts and sell them to facemen to put on the streets…

DOODLE - There's 5k every damn day LAZY BUMS!

Doctor/Medic - one's that have clinic support anyway

Mechanic - There's gonna be cars soon, gonna need someone to fix em up, or sell em.

These are some of the Admin supported options. Admin supported as in they are groups/positions made up to advance the play within' our world. There is code behind them and in some cases are ran by NPCs. And just because they're there does not mean you'll get hired. We hire those that would ICly be good for the job and USUALLY those who've shown involvement and such. Nothing's worse than hiring someone for something and then them not logging on for weeks.

But that does NOT mean that those are the only ways to go. Here are some more Ideas that we've seen in past or have thought up to spark some interest in your RPing minds.
******************************************

Tailor - Making clothes and selling for profit - we've got a few of those and perhaps someday this will become a skill or advantage and will be able to alter armor.

Medic - Selling their healing services, without the aid of a clinic or MIRAGE vehicle.

Thief/Pickpocket - At your own risk. High rewards, High risk.

Reseller - Buy and sell gear.. and no it doesn't all have to be the high priced stuff. And just because something is worth 'x' ammount of dollars, you GOTTA pay the bills, which means you ain't sellin' for retail.

Sell information - To the right person a secret could be worth thousands of chyen.

Bounty hunter - FT terminal or for hire privately. More people should be using this thing to get rid of their enemies. Believe me if somebody pissed me off enough I'd use it if I didn't want to deal with consequences. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO KILL SOMEONE YOURSELF!

Enforcer/Security - Somebody want some help with those gangers? Scared to walk alone someplace? Help them out and charge them. Yer taking time out of your day, and if you think they might be insulted by asking, YOU should be insulted that they wouldn't return the favor.

Guide - Show people around the dome, wait outside WW for someone who don't know their way around.

Gangs - Start one.. start mugging people who walk by your area. I can't wait to see an ambitious group of players do this. Shake them down for cash, gear, whatever. Doesn't have to be combat oriented if done right. You don't need admin support to get together with friends and start some shiznit.

Private Courier - We've had one or two in the past offering their abilities to deliver packages descretely so that person A doesn't have to be seen by person B.

Newbie Helper - Set up newbies with some gear for cheap or hand it out for free. Give them a weapon, some startup chyen maybe, show them around a bit. OOCly this gives them a better chance to enjoy the game and make them want to come back cause they have something to do. Tell them to pay you back within the week or something. Perhaps not all of them will stick around, but those that do will be grateful and will owe you in some way. Might not be a big payoff right now, but down the line…. who knows.

Gamble - Bet with your friends, throw down some money for those sparring sessions. Get a bunch of players involved and bet on who's going to win. Perhaps soon we'll have some coded dice or cards or somethin'…

Prostitute - Charge to be that whore that you are! or rip them off when they fall asleep on you.

Entertainer - Make a guitar our of material and RP your arse off at Carnal, see if WF needs any acts. Set up a poetry reading somewhere on green.

BEG - Sit on a street corner and ask for money. Or stand on a soap box and preach a cause. See if people will back your efforts monitarily.

USE YOUR IMAGINATION. If you have an idea, go with it. People freakin' pay money for drinks to be social. Taylors make money selling described materials to lazy people. And if someone doesn't want your services…PERSUADE THEM...SELL IT!!! If yer a business owner IRL sometimes you have to do some dirty work, kiss some arse in order to get the job...the same happens ICly.

And again, we don't just hand out jobs, if yer qualified and we need someone for those jobs...we'll talk :P BUT ICLY we'll talk.

And just think...once the matrix is up, Once vehicles are done, security systems are finished, there'll be a gazillion other jobs.

You just gotta stick with it. You won't make thousands over-night. Everyone at some point said 'I'll do anything for chyen'...if that were true you'd have money.

Disclaimer: Some of these categories were written and thought up by FS. I made some changes but don't want to take all the credit for the comments.

Yeah baby.

And if that post doesn't motivate your lazy asses then -nothing- will. Bunch of useless bums. Take -any- one of those ideas, put a little work and RP effort into it and you -will- make money. Perhaps not millions, but you'll make money -AND- enjoyable RP.

I will take a moment to expand on one of the above topics, information. I find it -amazing- how many players give away -valuable- information the instant they discover it. Not only do they give it away, the blurt it out over the public SIC for -ALL- to hear. To misquote a snippet of cyberpunk lore, "Information is power and currency in the virtual world we inhabit…".

Power -AND- Currency.

Sometimes the most valuable thing your character will EVER own is pure simple information.

Going to expand a bit more on this…

Information, gear, services... all that jazz. Its worthless if you don't let people know you have it. If you go out and talk to one or two people, your not going to get very far.

How successful would a Gear Exchanger be if he only sold to one or two people? Or a mechanic that doesn't make it known he is such?

How about a bounty hunter/assasin? Some people will use the FT Terminal, yes. But some may not want it on record, or some people may call for a perma. There are ways of making contact with people without revealing who you are.

The biggest thing I want to stress... TAKE RISKS. RP is dull and un-interesting unless risk is involved. Criminals, theives, pickpockets... they get nowhere unless they take a risk every now and then. Like Stone said, don't run to the admin asking for help, ideas, etc... work it on your own, RP it ICly... There are many ideas/ways to get things across, take a risk and see how it goes.

One thing, when the matrix is released, I want to be able to program. I wanna be a small-time software developer in my spare time :)

I can see it now… ANGEL ICE, your gaurdian from the demons of the matrix... *grins*

That's another great Idea of something to look forward too. Eventually there'll be services people can do for others.

Software programming: Creating different programs to deal with the different tasks inside the matrix. [Coming Sooner or Later]

Decking Hardware: Building the equipment for Decking [Coming Sooner or Later]

Weaponsmith: Whether it be building guns, or unjamming guns, or smithing blades, or laithing a bat… [Coming Sooner or Later]

Munitions: Anything from making ammo for guns, to grenades, to C4 and other explosives [Coming Sooner or Later]

Trainer: Why do you need a building that's described as a Dojo when you can just meet at a set location and RP training?? Perhaps someone will pay for it?

Encyclopedia Salesmen: *eyes* Um…nevermind...

I'm posting these just to give some insite into what could be someday. Focus on now and what you can do now which is a ton, but know that someday there'll be ways to do almost anything.

Doodle? color me confused

From Stone: Doodle is the NLM Elf that has been running around with tokens worth 5k apiece. All you ever needed was the phrase that pays and tell it to him and the tokens would be yours. This however ends on the 25th of December.

(Edited by Stonemonk at 7:31 am on Dec. 24, 2001)

Jadael planted another job idea in my head!

Barterer: Some of you are better able to haggle with people at the market. Hang around the market and offer your services to someone who doesn't have as much luck selling things.  Depending on the items you may or may not make that much (a percentage of the price).

Cabby: Once upon a time we had Taxiis, and as soon as the vehicle code is released i'm sure that will be reopened. You basically 'rent' a vehicle for an hour, picking up fares etc and at the end of the hour the car drives itself back to home base.

Souvineers: Some of you make the craziest things out of Material. Attempt to sell them to other players. DO NOT make replicas of coded weapons/armor/gadgets etc… Make Withmore T-Shirts, I know we have some WJF action figures around here somewhere...

Fin;)

For Newbies reading this list:

Some of these are not coded: Software programming, Decking repairmen, Weaponsmith, munitions, and cabby.
Trainor may be coded someday.

They will be eventually. The rest are things that are either coded or are RP'd.  You must find out how to obtain these jobs ICly. You ask how???

How would you find a job in the real world? Look up on the newspaper, ask friends, inquire at the business you want to work for. SOMEBODY knows how to get into the biz, but part of getting the job, is finding out how to get the job.

fin.

I started a new job already.  I'm the new local body piercer. And Lucien is the new tattoo artist.
There's actually already a chunk of backend code done for tattoo's and piercings, funnily enough. All the code is in place for your character to have tattoo's, for them to show up in your nakeds when looked at and for them to disappear when you clone. Unfortunately, Odinn (ex-admin) never got round to finishing the tattoo gun…

Add it to the list.

Yeah. I agree with everyting said here but…
As a newbie it is pretty hard to make money. I worked at Shi for a while then got some jobs from Bruce. Thing was as a newbie I didn't know wheere anything was and after a while my character got tired and threw the package away. So... It is all rather daunting and tough work as a newbie.
I don't know if I made the point I intended to make there, but think about it, huh?
Wrong topic, Wren ;)
This is a bit delayed, but I realized I never go through the Themes forum anymore, so here's a quick resonse. As a newbie, an easy way to learn your way around is to -walk around-. Take a few hours out of your day and walk around red, looking in every building and seeing what's where. The levels are all laid out very logically, and it doesn't take to long to learn where everything is. Do the same with Gold and Green, too. In a day or two you can know where pretty much everything is. Don't be afraid to "get lost" in the game - stick to a direction and you can pretty much find your way back anywhere.
You can also make a map. I did because the one on the SIC is pretty lame. It helped me remember things that Tash would. Like keeping a list of phone numbers.

Hey…I'm gonna @idea that too a better map!

When I was a newbie, WAY back when there was still an OOC-chat, I asked on it how to find something.

I was told to walk around the moo.

So I did. I even read the really really REALLY good room descriptions and in no time at all I had it all memorized and locked away in my braincase. Then I started giving tours to other newbies. Sometimes for free. Sometimes for profit. Sometimes to get someone under my control, or a way to introduce myself to new faces.

Also helped cause I found and remembered where all these great hidden meeting spots are, or where to kill someone, or where some people slept thinking it was safe and so you can rob the fuck out of em.

It's good to walk around and learn the lay of the land, realistic too. You are new to the dome, you'll be one lost mofo in a big crowd of angery rioting bastards.

You can always ask over SIC too.
Yeah you could ask over SIC.  But than you also run the risk of someone giving you the wrong directions, and leading you into a trap, killing you, than taking the package for themselves.  The best way to learn the dome is through exploration.  I don't know about the rest of you, but if I were to move to a new place, or dome for that matter, I would learn the streets, before I would even think of becoming a delivery driver there.
Hey! I never said it was the smartest thing in the world, I was just listing it as an option…

SO THERE! Hehehe... :P

DAMNIT ALL TO HELL! I was haveing trouble trying to post earlier and I look at it and what the fuck do I see. Jeeze, I feel like a dumbass now.

Woohoo, my first post.

I made a map too.  One of the first things.
