Well, if you are a noncombatant who has invested in combat skills chances are you will be at a huge disadvantage against someone who has invested their UE into combat skills, weapon or otherwise. I also don't see Martial arts as a "primary weapons" skill if that makes sense. I would personally class it as a "secondary weapons" skill. Your jab-cross-hook-low kick combo is never going to hit as hard as a 10mm. The higher end MA weapon might be a different argument, but thinking martial arts should be on par with weapons is not a good approach. If that were the case nobody would bother buying weapons and everyone would just be really into karate.
"Brawling/Martial Arts are not intended to be on par with someone with a gun or a sword, but you'll never be unarmed. The trade-offs you make are up to you."
so i don't think it's something you need to use a ton of guesswork to learn. if you helpfile ma/brawling you learn pretty quick that it's not on par with weapon skills bc you never have to worry about a weapon at a baseline
But you have no idea what the person with the spyderco's build is. They could have a lot invested into that short blade build.
Subsequently, there are trade-offs for every weapon skill too. You may scoff that some are less desirable than others, but those trade-offs exist throughout the game. Martial Arts is not special in that regard.
