Town Hall: Newbie Retainment

What follows is my log of the Sindome Town Hall Meeting hosted on Nov 13th. The only modifications have been to remove the general amount of admin-only spam that follows across my scroll. When commenting on portions of this log, please DO NOT quote the entire thing. Copy and paste -a small portion- that is just what you are commenting on. Once again, thanks to all that participated then and those that post now.

Iga says loudly, "All right, at this point I am going to officially bring the first Sindome Town Hall meeting to order, all comments will now need to be held unless you are standing and called upon."
Silvan [to Chipp]: no, like this.
Silvan holds out his palm.
Allandra sits down on the Bleachers.
Kevlar sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga says loudly, "I would like to thank everyone for coming tonight, and apologize for the chaos earlier. FIrst time we've done a thing like this."
Chipp glances down at his silver rolex.
Iga says loudly, "I will be the official moderator for the evening, if you need and wish to make a comment, please raise your hand, and I will call on you in order."
Silvan glances down at his silver rolex.
Iga says loudly, "The first thing is that you should all read the sign in the room and aquaint yourselves with the full rules of the meeting."
Bright neon blue letters ask you to obey the following instructions:

1) Please be seated upon entering the meeting.

2) Please remain seated until called on to stand by the moderator.

3) When you wish to address the group, please emote sticking your hand in the air. You will be called on in the order seen by the moderator.

4) At any time there shall only be -ONE- (1) person speaking, in addition to the moderator.

5) Failure to follow the rules outlined at http://www.sindome.org/cgi-bin/l.pl?townhallguide will result in expulsion from the meeting area.

6) Failure to follow these rules will result in a warning, after the third warning you will be removed from the meeting area.

You will still be able to watch the meeting, just not comment openly during the proceedings."
Iga says loudly, "I will assume that the majority of you have all had an opprotunity to do so."
Johnny takes Ari's suggestion to jam the SIC in here.
Chipp sticks his thumb up.
Richard nods.
Iga says loudly, "Now, let us move on to the first topic of discussion on the list on the BgBB: why new players appear to be leaving Sindome at an early character or Guest status stage. Table ways to increase the new players in the game, and ways to make it 'easier' for them to want to stay, be it more money, excitement, etc."
Iga says loudly, "Stick your hand up if you'd like to comment or discuss."
Ari raises his hand.
Miranda raises her hand.
Chipp rais
Iga points at Ari, "Sir, you first."
[OOC: Chipp says, "telnet"]
Ari gets up from the Bleachers.
Ari says loudly, "Alright… I'm relatively new, so I just recently went
through chargen."
Ari says loudly, "I actually went through several times. Actually. I lost two characters previous to this one."
Ari says loudly, "Both died for different reasons... but both were, in some ways, freak occurances. "
Johnny nods to Chipp.
Ari says loudly, "The thing that was consistant, with both of them, though... was an extreme lack of RP. Too much trouble with gangers. Threats and what not from PCs. (No RP, just physical threats and disappearances.)"
Ari says loudly, "Money was also a huge problem. The coffins held out, but even with Bruce runs and SHI... it wasn't possible to get a clone. Which, in my opinion, is a problem."
You ask, "does it not add to the danger?"
Trancer raises his hand
Ari says loudly, "Hold on, almost done..."
You nod.
Ari says loudly, "Clones used to be 2k for a clone, 200c for an update, from what I was told. And -that- was good for a newbie. That was a doable. In my opinion, a newbie should be able to get enough cash for a clone, relatively easy. With -no- help from players. Alot of newbies won't be as dedicated as to do as many bruce runs as possible in any given day. They need to grow onto the game before they get that dedication."
Chipp raises his hand.
Kevlar raises his hand.
Ari says loudly, "5k for a clone, 1k for an update does nothing but hurt newbies. Older players have the money to burn, or an income for it, while newbies definately do not. I don't know how to fix that, but thats how I see it."
Ari nods.
Ari sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Ari.
Iga [to Ari]: okay, take a seat.
Iga points at Miranda, "You had a hand up second."
Ari eyes his surroundings.
Miranda nods to Iga.
Miranda gets up from the Bleachers.
Miranda says loudly, "Ari Was talking about cloning be hard for newer players.. I dont quite see it the same way."
Iga nods to Miranda.
Miranda says loudly, "My current character is relativily new, compared to toher characters on SD as long as i have been. With a new char, If you have your history done when you go through the process, you can get a clone within 5 days of arving to the city"
Miranda says loudly, "without player help or npcs."
Ari raises his hand.
Miranda says loudly, "aslo. As far as excitement goes…"
Miranda says loudly, "It really seems to be when a newcomer logs on that has to do with this. theres sometimes I log on and find 3 ppl total on the @who, invised and uninvised. if Sam_guest comes then, he wont have a reason to want to come back."
Miranda says loudly, "So part of the problem that guests are leaving doesn't seem to have a solution to me, its just luck of the draw."
Miranda says loudly, "and I think thats all i had to say."
Marcus is summoned in by Johnny.
Marcus asks, "What's goin on?"
Miranda sits down on the Bleachers.
Chipp raises his hand.
Iga nods to Miranda.
Iga [to Chipp]: your up.
Chipp smiles.
Chipp gets up from the Bleachers.
Sable sits down on the Bleachers.
Chipp says loudly, "First off…i apologize for typos. Me without a backspace key is kev with aout a morning mast...well..."
Ari waves to Sable.
Chipp says loudly, "On the topic of the new players ono9t feeling appealed. .,akjsf;akjs"
You poke Sable in the ribs.
Marcus sits down on the Bleachers.
Richard looks at chipp confused.
Chipp says loudly, "Naturally you are not going to have ever guest stay if all they see is e3 people on the #@who. I say screw those players. The srong willed ones that Rp even when they are all by themselves are who you need."
Richard . o O ( Dipshit. )
You say, "cut and paste from another app, for future reference, to anyone else without backspace"
Chipp says loudly, "the way i see it..the problem is not getting those people to stay, but advertise more and in better places. The odds are you will have more people stay, but it will be because you gathered sttrong RPers"
Chipp says loudly, "I think SD needs more players that dont need t20 people to be intrigued."
Iga nods to Chipp.
Chipp says loudly, "So in my opinion, the way is to just work harder on geting the name out there. Keeping the ones that are turned off by the INITIAL lack of RP in.. dont seem to be worth the troublte."
Chipp sighs loudly.
Chipp says loudly, "I apologize."
Iga [to Chipp]: no problem. Please, take a seat.
Iga [to Trancer]: You're up.
Trancer nods to Iga.
Trancer gets up from the Bleachers.
Chipp says loudly, "I think i'll save us the rest of this sit"
Chipp sits down on the Bleachers.
Trancer says loudly, "Alright. Just to address Ari's point, and one I think is very important, as it's probably one of the most contested ones I've see occur since I've come to the MOO…about clone prices, and such."
Trancer says loudly, "I think the price if getting the clone is fine. If it was raised even, I wouldn't object."
Aikon nods.
Allandra nodses.
Trancer says loudly, "It's not meant to be something everyone can get. It's a privelege. Think about it...you can be shot to death..and wake up in a fresh new body 20 minutes later. Even by 2088's standards, it's a miracle of science."
Trancer says loudly, "The fact it's available to the general public is a wonder. The fact any bum on the street can get it for 5k, is also a wonder."
Trancer says loudly, "The people who have trouble getting it are immigrants, and citizens of RED. Someone please feel free to explain to me why that doesn't make sense, or is in -any- way, unbalanced."
Iga nods to Trancer.
Iga [to Trancer]: sorry, trying to give everyone a turn, one last post and you need to sit.
Aikon raises his hand
Silvan's body goes limp as he slumps to the ground unconscious.
Chipp bows his head slightly and frowns.
Chipp pokes Silvan in the ribs.
Silvan hauls himself to his feet, rubbing his eyes.
Trancer says loudly, "Some would argue that we should sacrifice reality for enjoyment, as it's only a game. I say…not a game where survival is a primary point of RP. (Really? This is my last, then. Heh.) As far as the main topic...it's been about a a year and a half since I came here, but I remember what made me stay. I never once thought about turning away because of prices, or who was on the @who list. The reason I stayed, was the RP I got wrapped up in. Nothing surprising here...want them to say? RP them in. Easier said than done, but...that's the answer."
Trancer nods to Iga.
Trancer sits down on the Bleachers.
Chipp's body goes limp as he slumps to the ground unconscious.
Iga nods to Trancer.
Chipp hauls himself to his feet, rubbing his eyes.
Iga [to Kevlar]: I belive you are next sir.
Kevlar gets up from the Bleachers.
Kevlar says loudly, "Clones are a luxary. Just like life insurance. Not everyone is ment to have one. They're also not required for survival."
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* please emote loudly so all can hear, and please think about writting up comments in a side text editor and paste it in when your turn comes.*end transmission*
Allandra nods.
Kevlar says loudly, "They're also not prohibitivly expensive: a newbie can get one inside of half an hour if they're knoledgable."
Kevlar says loudly, "Having said that, there probablly is a case for newbies starting with more of a 'head-start'."
Silvan sits down on the Bleachers.
Chipp sits down on the Bleachers.
Kevlar says loudly, "Maybe more money… maybe more of a guide..."
Kevlar says loudly, "Definately more RP right off the bat. Or more ways to find RP. And I'de love to hear some suggestions on how to provide thoes things."
Kevlar sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Kevlar.
Chipp looks tired and yawns.
Iga [to Ari]: I belive you had a hand up after kevlar.
Ari gets up from the Bleachers.
Ari says loudly, "I typed out alot, but its really long. So I'm paraphrasing."
Ari says loudly, "I appologize for lenght."
Ari says loudly, "Bruce runs depend on stats, everyone knows that. Most newbies won't, and probably won't get enough for a clone in five days. That's still if they do max runs per day… and knowing newbies. They probably won't because they won't have the drive to. Hell. Oldbies don't, alot of people are lazy. Perhaps the first clone could be discounted? People with money don't see how hard it is to pay for them just starting out WITHOUT oldbie help. Oldbies can die at will, and shrug it off. Even if a newbie affords a clone, they die. And they are out 5k that they needed. The 'curve' of the economy, without player intervention, slowly increases and then shoots up. The people that -rely- on clones, are the ones with the money to afford them. Joe Blow on the street could get killed for no reason, and die. There are some realisms that need to take a backseat to game balance. New players working on history... RPing. Doing Bruce runs... then losing it all because some oldbie wanted spending cash? Not a good way to keep players. I understand the arguements for clones being luxuries. But oldbies can go through them like socks without breaking a sweat, even if they live on Red. People that are BRAND new to SD have -NO- knowledge of the game. NONE. There is a grace period... but even then, it is rough."
Ari says loudly, "Good RPers will leave if they don't see anyone on. Simply because they are good, and can have fun elsewhere if there are more people there. And RP needs to be consistant and player driven to keep them... and there needs to be ALOT of it."
Ari sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods to Ari.
Allandra raises her hand.
Iga [to Chipp]: You had a hand up after Ari, your turn.
<OOC> Silvan goes AFK.
Chipp says loudly, "Pass."
Iga nods to Chipp.
Chipp smiles at Iga.
Iga [to Aikon]: Your turn then.
Aikon gets up from the Bleachers.
Trancer raises his hand
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* 10 minute warning on this topic, then we'll have to move on.*end transmission*
Aikon says, "well first of all, you can enter the game and literally have a clone within 10 minutes, if you know where to go, and what to do, which honestly most newbies don't…...."
Chipp nods.
Aikon says, "but maybe the protection thing should be explained to newbies, don't attack/kill anyone and you can't be attacked or killed, it should also be made abundantly clear that they are not as powerful as most.;"
Chipp . o O ( help newbie.. )
<OOC> Silvan returns to his keyboard.
Allandra . o O ( that should be a given )
Iga [to Aikon]: last comment please.
Aikon says, "I think one of the most important things about keeping newbies around is education… maybe even a pc IC guide.. maybe not just a suggestion, but you could even pay pc's it would stimulate rp, and educate the newbie"
Aikon says, "just one quick thing"
Chipp's body goes limp as he slumps to the ground unconscious.
Iga nods to Aikon.
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* keep the think comments to a minimum.*end transmission*
Aikon says, "it should be given, but it's not... how many noobs attack the first thing they see out of chargen? I think the admins can fill you in on that"
Aikon says, "that's all"
Aikon sits down on the Bleachers.
Silvan's body goes limp as he slumps to the ground unconscious.
Iga nods to Aikon.
Iga [to Allandra]: you wanted a comment on this?
Allandra says loudly, "Yeah, although I've kinda lost my train of thought."
Iga [to Allandra]: stand and deliver soldier!
[OOC: Allandra says, "is really laggy sowry"]
Morphix is summoned in by Kevlar.
*incoming OOC transmission from Iga* all right, after alla, I'll be wrapping up topic 1.*end transmission*
Morphix sits down on the Bleachers.
Iga [to Allandra]: Ummm, we may have to move on if you are lagging this badly…sorry...I'll give you a moment longer.
Allandra says loudly, "Well the whole clone issue, I'm with the school of thought that its a privlage, The way I see it, if people didn't get clones right off the bat, then they'd be less likely to take action that would get the character killed, focus more on the RP and build a richer fuller char. as far as Aikon's point about how many newbies just jump in and start killing things, been there done that, learned from my mistake and I haven't gone through another character yet. I do belive there should be more RP going on, but I'm not in a position to point fingers seeing as I've been fas less active than I used to be,"
Iga nods to Allandra.
Iga [to Allandra]: I'll ask you to take a seat please. Sorry, a time thing.
Allandra says loudly, "I do belive however there should be different clone packages, the cheaper ones, ya get DCD more often and shit, maybe just a stat loss right off the cuff"
Aikon nods.
Iga nods to Allandra.
Trancer nods to Allandra.
Allandra sits down.
Iga [to Trancer]: make it fast m'man. :)
Trancer nods.
Trancer gets up from the Bleachers.
Trancer says loudly, "It's true that sometimes there are some unfortunate newbie deaths that do nothing but turn a player away, or make them start over right after they've barely begun-it happens. It's never going to -not- happen. And, there's more to making money as a newbie than SHI and Bruce. That probably pisses some people off to hear, I know it annoyed me to hear when I was new…but it's true. It's hard to find, but far from impossible...it just takes what the game's all about, and that's RP'ing, socializing, getting out there and making it happen. And it's very profitable. Many around could testify to that. And, on a quick note, I think Alla's ideas about cloning packages is a -great- idea, and should definately be thought on."
Trancer sits down on the Bleachers.
Richard says loudly "l
Iga [to You]: you get to close this one, your final comment please.
Ari nods.
You stand up.
The Grande Amphitheatre
The space you stand in is a massive dome, the ceiling so high up it is obscured in utter darkness. From those inky depths neon lighting flashes down around you, the digital ether filled with the glow of neon blue and argon green laser light that flashes and draws holo ads across the wide, disturbingly blank walls around you. The large space has a vaguely colosseum shape to it, a loose oval that at times feels over a half mile wide. Terraced rows of large, comfortable seats spiral down from the inky heights above you, sloping slowly towards a central dais that floats above a small empty circle only 20 feet in diameter. The stage hovers over 50 feet in the air, wires, cables, and electronic lighting dangling from it's underbelly. The space looks like it could hold hundreds of thousands of people comfortably, even though only a fraction of that is in use. Figures flicker and phase in and out in the stands, occasionally holding cohesion long enough to be recognized as the ghosts from events long past. A member of Baby-Smashers here, Lucifer there, and any number of the faceless masses that surround you on a daily basis. Suspended from above is a massive holographic display, that has the words 'LOOK AT THE SIGN' scrolling across it over and over.
Richard, Allandra, Miranda, Marcus, Ari, Aikon, Morphix and Trancer are sitting in the bleachers, watching.
You see a Sign.
Retarded Iga is not sleeping here. Chipp and Silvan are sleeping here.
There are no visible exits.
You say, "No need for a lot of words here …"
Gitzo silently slides into the room.
Gitzo sits down on the Bleachers.
You say, "These people are not leaving when they are in limbo. They are logging off in front of the coffins, live, untouched. Death is not the problem in my opinion. If death isn't the problem, then how clones be? I've been recently exploring new advertising opportunitues, more on that in a post later. You do raise good points about clone prices for newbies vs oldbies and mixers vs corpies as well as variety of clone packages."
You sit down on the Bleachers.
Iga nods.

The meeting continued with the next topic.

Hey, look mom! I'm famous!

…The space looks like it could hold hundreds of thousands of people comfortably, even though only a fraction of that is in use. Figures flicker and phase in and out in the stands, occasionally holding cohesion long enough to be recognized as the ghosts from events long past. A member of Baby-Smashers here, Lucifer there, and any number of the faceless masses that surround you on a daily basis….

Well would you look at that...

My statements on the "lower-clone-prices" issue:

You people realize there are moneylenders out there right?  Characters with shitloads of money that are willing to take the risk in helping out a weak little bastard straight outta the badlands?

They're pretty easily accessible too.  But nobody wants to borrow.

Believe me.  So many good RP opportunities wasted.  Tsk.

And anyone who makes the comment that oldbies have 'money to burn' has no idea on the subject, you can't throw them all into the same bucket.
I agree.  Just because a character is older, doesn't mean it has alot of money.

Go by IC reputation and word-of-mouth.
