Ambient population

Yeah, let's mug them, and they can mug us.

Nothing crazy, on Red say, 3 'freebies' a day (1 per hour maybe?), random amount from 40 to 100 chyen, (just enough to pay a night ot two rent at New Rose.  Anything after that and the 'citizen' blows you in to WJF or TERRA or their big brother or whatever. These should be pretty easy to do as if you're gonna mug someone, let's face it, you're gonna go after the easy pickings. Same goes for them, players can get mugged as well. Is this something for a Babble On script? Dunno.

On gold, it get's tougher .. 2 per day, tops, but bigger payoffs, maybe 200-500 or some items like a phone or … and a chance that -each- attempt get's you turned in.

On Green, well, if you mug on Green, you get what you deserve. Big payoff, more chyen or better item, but you will get turned in.

I'm sure there are more things we can do to them, and they can do to us, but I just can't think of any right now.

Yeah, it would take some coding and no, it shouldn't detract from the Matrix and Cybernetics and all that -really- good stuff, I just think this would be a good way to get people out, and raise the conflict level a bit.

Go Max Go!

This one is my favourite, because deep in the recess of my heart I have a secret fondness for pickpocket.

And again - yay for the ambient population; gangers, murderers, and thieves oh my!

heh this kids on a roll, not a freebie though, just very easy.  It should have some sort of limit too.  If you get caught they yell over SIC, for a judge with your descrip
why would someone on red yell for a judge? They'd just knife you.

too me it just seems like an easy way to get chyen without any real repercussions if you are busted. Someone yelling on sic? Oh, no, don't, please. *gasp*

If they attacked you, yeah, or gang beat you , yeah. But just a lame yell out? For that ammount of chyen?

maybe if it was like 5-10 on red, 10-30 on gold, and 25-50 on green. But 500? Jesus. That's nuts for zero effort and zero risk.

The idea, was to make the ambient population more interactive. I'm sure there are other things that can be done other than mugging, this was just the first example that came to mind. Additionally, this gives players more of an ability to play fast and hard, if that's IC for them.

As for the amounts, I think that it's not unreasonable to think those figures could be realistic.

People on red walking around with enough chyen to by a drink.

People on Gold walking around with enough chyen to ride the lev to and from work and to get a meal at lunch.

People on Green, well, the corpies -always- have chyen on them .. the housewives are shopping ..

As for risk, you are correct, SICing from Red is useless, at -least- until TERRA is more of a force. However, this opens up possibilities. That 'big brother' was a generic term, maybe the guy was in a gang and just not wearing colors, now Chaim comes looking for payback.

Maybe it was Raymond's girlfriend and now you just got banned .. see what I'm saying?

It would give GM's (I believe) a ton of easy material to draw on for plots and stuff. Just my opinion.

But people on Gold and Green, sending a SIC to WJF, ok, now it's getting -much- more risky.

Murphy is sitting in the office and all of a sudden a message comes over ..

"Be on the lookout for male suspect, age 20-40 average height and wiry to average build, wearing holoscreen shirt and pants that swear at you"

Murphy . o O (Heh, Max …)

The next day ...

Max walks along the street, heading for the Drome. He looks up at the underside of the massive platform holding 3/4 of the 65 million citizens that walk past you like ghosts. Praying the laws of gravity will bend just a little more, and heads on. Turning a corner, he finds himself staring straight down the barrel of a judge's gun. "Oh shit", he thinks as he hears the last sounds of his life ... "sentenced to death by execution."

Granted, I don't think execution is a first offence option, but if he got blown in several times, or didn't pay his fine .. but that's a discussion for another day.

And don't forget, players can get mugged too, same rules apply, not that PCs are going to get any justice ..

Max to Murphy: "Hey, I got mugged on Green yesterday by some punk with a leather jacket, and a rainbow Mowhawk who told me his name was Joe Blow"

Murphy to Max: "Well, give me a good reason that scum like should be up on Green and maybe, I'll look into it."

Murphy . o O (Heh .. right, bout time you got what you deserverd).

NIc so harsh…bastard.  They were examples so :p, but yeah maybe you get one knife wound, not a whole combat round.  BU t it's a good idea none the less.
Just to throw in my two cents.  Sorry Max I gotta disagree with you on the whole people on Green -always- carry money.  From what I understand money is dirty.  No-one uses cold hard cash cept criminals in Sindome.  The upper levels are ruled by the cred chip.  I'll conceed the whole Lev fair thing,  a guy might carry around a few hundred chyen to get back and forth to work but other than that the people who live thier lives on Green and dare I say Blue don't carry around cash.  Cash is for those under-handed dealings in a back alley.
And before you get a chance to say it, I know -all- the shops on Green take chyen,  but if you look at the little label next to the amount it says -credits-  Which in my eyes means the admin just haven't gotten around to coding NPC's to take Cred Chips.  Maybe they do and I'm mistaken, but my point i feel is still valid.  Alright fellas tear it apart if you can.
Every so often strange things happen. The planets align perfectly and I agree with Allandra's player on something.

He's right about the cred chips and the cash. Just think about your average American dollar bill. Just a one dollar bill. They are supposedly carrying straints of Hepatitis, Salmonella and a bevy of other noxious bacterial matter and virses. Now imagine if you will a city in a dome with over 65 million residents and chyen that only circulates within that city. Picture how filthy red is, and Bansupuro. Imagine Sally's little grubby hands handling the money that has somehow ended up in your pocket.

No self respecting bored corporate housewife would touch that. She's going to pay everyone, even Paulo her tennis instructor and bit on the side with a cred chip. Why? Because they're clean and neat and don't require her to handle filthy money.

The shop owners in the Mallplex are supposed to take the cred chips, but like Allandra's player mentioned its just not done yet or they haven't got one yet.

I imagine eventually you'll be able to pay rent on Green with the cred chip cards.

Ok,

I'll conceede the idea about more chyen on green.  Lev fare/lunch money .. cool.

Should there be a better chance for getting an item?  A cell phone, Quik-Term, E-note?  Things that people on Green (or Gold for that matter) would carry.

I'd think these would be fairly common.  And no, just because I'm already seeing the protests line up, I'm not saying on every mugging .. 1 in 10?  1 in 20 maybe?

After all, big risk, big reward, right?

Just a thought.

*boggles* A QUICKTERM!?

My god. Those are worth like 5k!!

For pickpocketing something that isn't there?! That can't really respond? And…and...and...

*explodes*

*coaleses*

I'm all for more interactive Ambiant population, but to me this just looks like it would be used and abused beyond belife. Quick easy no RP cash for mindless people. Log on, pick three times per level, sell gear, kill sleeper, log off.

If there were reactions that would be great. Like on red. You get busted and 20 people jump you and kill you. Or strip you naked. Or something. At least a stab wound in the eye.

But topside? APB to WJF will get nothing, theif would be long gone. So like, you get shit, zero real risk or effort. That is the part I don't like.

That obviously would depend on how often the "random" factor happened.  If you're walking from say Soma station down to visit your old pal Bruce and you got a message that was something like:

In the crowd you see an overweight pasty blonde-haired, blue-eyed man in a too tight suit. He is preoccupied, arguing loudly with the hot dog vendor in order to get more mustard.

So you think, "Sure why not?" And you have a go at picking his pocket.

Now of course he could catch you. Or the vendor could catch you. Or you could get away with it, but maybe only get a few chyen.

But if the messages were done much like the ambient population ones there are now the only way for you to find out is to stop and give it a try. Which, gives you the option of not trying obviously.  And if you were stacking commands using go or sneak you'd probably not even notice, being too intent on getting where you need/want to be instead.

And what's to say that just because an opportunity like the above opens up that it doesn't also close?

pickpocket fat man

As you reach out to try and pick his pocket the man turns around, fuming from having lost his arguement he storms off ruining any chance for you to lift his wallet.

Its entirely possible to pickpocket people on Red and get a quickterm, I don't see why it wouldn't be on Green or even Gold. Hell you can even lift weapons and ammo from people on red and sell them in the market for more than a quickterm if you're charisma is high enough.
