Progia Implant
Progia Cyberware

Idea for having an implanted progia as a cyberware.

You can get a progia implanted as a module for a cyberear, it functions like a regular progia with zero apps, minutes also apply. You should be able to pay minutes in the same way as a regular phone. However, since you can't really bring a microphone close to your mouth with a progia being implanted in your ear, you're only able to speak aloud to talk into the phone (no speaking quietly).

In order to use apps such as messaging or the WSB app, you would have to link the cyber-progia to a visual overlay.

The major problem I can see with this is that you essentially just have an un-dippable phone, however to counter this you can have this be marginally more expensive than a normal progia.

This has been discussed many times and the concern is it would completely destabilize the pickpocket economy.
Honestly, just for calls I think it would be a great thing to have. An expensive implant that lets you just call people as if you had a progia phone.

All the app functionality is kept by the normal progias, and the fact that it would be expensive and cyberware wouldn't make it available to just about everyone. Given the progia standardization, this could be the next status symbol that the old progia levels used to be.

While this is what private SIC is for, so it would share functionality there, I still think it would be very themely to have something like this.

I spent some time thinking on this and ways to expand a use or make it more themely, without totally removing the phones themselves. These ideas may be dumb, but it was just something that popped into my head.

Examples in this being, rather than making a new implant all together, develop it so the Progia can interact with pre-existing implants or cyberware.

Examples being:

A new App is introduced on the Progia called CyberLink, using this app allows your processor and phone to link up as long as your phone is on your persons.

With CyberLink activated:

Radio Implants can now function like a hands-free progia, allowing players users to talk on the phone.

Cyber-Eye attachments allow players to read text messages and use other apps on the Progia wirelessly.

Expanding on the idea:

Using this as well with a Passcode locking system to Progia, this would probably increase people holding progia on their persons, these phones having apps that link to their cyberware (because they may feel more confident to hold an app phone at that point anyways). Passcodes allowing players to lock their phones to secure information, but the implants allowing use of the phone even with the phone still on their person.

Emergent Loops: Phone Lottery

If phones did have a passcode system on them, this would give decker characters an option for trying to crack the phones (Similar to the phreaking discussion thread). Meaning you could score a phone with more apps on it likely, increasing a value of a phone.

Maaaan, standardizing progias was not great imo. I like the apps, but think it would have been better to keep the phone models, spread the apps out across them with the higher models having more options than the lower ones. Similar to before, but with the set of apps we have now.

As for a progia implant, I second Reefer's concern.

I really like @Meat's suggestions.

The best part about it is that it requires the character to have the phone on their person. That eliminates the concern about destabilizing the pickpocket economy.

At the same time, it gives characters who want to spend the chyen and PDS load, the ability to use their Progia without having to hold onto it.

I like to think it does feel more on theme, hands free phone calls.

It expands the use of current cyberware increasing its value for quality of life uses, encouraging people to get cyberware for convenience making your choices more meaningful, really what you'd want to spend on.

Also @RatchetEffect's comment, I like the current standardized apps, but reintroducing models would be interesting, perhaps not as a 'status' symbol per se, but allowing hardware of the progia itself to incorporate into the phone.

I.E This model has a built in camera, yeah its pricey. But now you always have a camera, and you have that radio implant, so now it's something you could just never leave home without. Sure it can't print, but slot in that e-mem to save your photos and print them later!

While lower Tier phones still get apps, but have less hardware uses.

This could also be a stupid idea as it overlaps with what is currently available (and perhaps TOO much like modern life phones), but I am also of the personal belief that having multiple ways to do something is interesting, as long as they each of their niche.

My opinion tends towards phones being already overcooked in development terms, but you could achieve basically the same functional outcomes without all the extra new cyberware and app development time by just deleting the 'are they holding the phone' check on the to progia speech command.
I think a middle ground would be good. An earpiece you can wear and a chrome you can install. The only thing either has to do is be present on the person. If they are, the phone doesn't care if you are holding it to talk.

I could get onboard with the bluetooth idea that keeps phones with the user. I like the password idea too, but I think that should be an app as well to add to the basic value of a progia.

Reason goes back to dips. I haven't played a dip since well before they were changed to a single phone with apps, but I assume their price is relatively the same.

The payout for sevens was fairly small back in the day, but you could offset that by the number of proggies you dipped. If you have to hire a decker to crack a phone then the dip or the fixer isn't going to make a profit on it, I think.

So make the password an app, raising the phone's value and offsetting the expense needed to hire that decker in the middle.
