Shred the Grid!

I know the grid has only been recently put back online and this in no way a list of demands, its merely a place for us to clusterfuck are ideas on what should be within' the reach of your average data monkey in the grid…

A Hidden BBS (Or an Encrypted Board) - We've all heard so much about the ratpack but where the hell is that BBS? I'm just talking one board stashed somewhere so smack could be talked....either that or maybe a whacky node with I dunno...gamma prime security, that you can't delete off of but only add. Kinda like a wall to tag on.

The BBS isn't that important though...

The Weather! Skywatch should be totally hackable in a King of the mountain fashion, changing the weather should difficult but possible and based on the level (Red, Gold, Green, Blue) , the current weather, and the desired condition.

Just imagine kiddies, "The WJF is coming to get me." ... "not in a class 5 hurricane, l33t!!"

Gridphones, its been mentioned by the J-man himself soO YEAH...if there was a backlog you could check by searching enter the number of the telephone that'd be sick. You'd have to need some specifics for this one though, if a grid fiend could access every conversation on the grid w/o knowing the number it'd be real ugly.

WJF Database, speaks for itself...it'd be nice to have read-only access for deckers. Read-write would have to be a righteus hack...maybe even GM approved...otherwise who would pay their fines?

The Bank, once again read-only access to prevent abuse. The ability to lookup someone's balance based their SIC # would be raw.

Cube farms? Maybe a database of what SIC # is in what room...perhaps? Too easy to abuse?

Adblimps, Eyepods and SIC Ads! It'd be interesting to be able to flash a quick message worldwide over an adblimp...or hijack an Eyepod to see what those kids are really selling around the corner...and hacking SIC Ads would be clutch...perhaps requiring GM approval post hack to ensure quality of the ad.

Outside of that, more in-game systems would be cool...I've noticed some progress with Freqman's and various tracking systems. Very cool!

Ohhh, and before I forget....

Username spoofing when modding nodes, a neccesity for any hacker.

Node lists of allowed users to modify.

And maybe someday...softz?
YARR!

In-game subsystems would be sick too...there are alot of hard to get places in the dome...maybe they should have blackboxes?

…glad to see some things never change.
Yeah, lots of things never change…

I think it would be a great idea in theory, but there is also too much room for abuse. I mean most people would take advantage of the weather or the WJF and all that everytime they got a fine, so it would only be open to the upper 99th percentile of hackers to be able to access that kind of information.  Not to mention the amount of code involved to give the player ability to control the weather, it is probably not going to be considered for a while, if at all. I am not saying it isnt a good idea, but I think the staff has other things they're focusing on at the moment.

Thanks for bringing back the Grid in full, it's great.

Just to add to this list of real/unreal features…A few things that would be great would be for me..

1) Interactive nodes. Like a form for text input.. you type in commands if you know them.. you get a response

2) Password protected nodes.. you visit a node but to access data you need a key. At this point most nodes can be viewed by anyone... important information won't find its way onto the grid unless it can be protected.

3) I don't know if its possible with the current IRL setup, would be a more hierarchical structure to nodes. Node connections link nodes together, but every time you want to add a page you effectively create a new, indpendent node. It would be great if you could have "sub-nodes" or some such thing.. a master page and then branches of subsidiary nodes that don't need to show up in public or something.

4) Its cool in some ways but not so cool in others. Being able to put wildcard '*' in the search and get a list of all nodes/accounts is great for exploring but it kind of ruins the mystery of the Grid. I'm more for limiting the information and providing people with the possibility to explore and discover by themselves.

There are some subtleties to the grid…

Just not too many people who are into them.

Meh, didn't mean to come off as an all-knowing bastard…I like your ideas BB. I just like to think I'm enlightened and shit.

On a side not...if the welcome page could be updated regularly and the citizen highlight actually be done...that'd be cool. Hell, you could give that job too a player.

I can gridmail myself to store data…
Why shouldn't people be able to read that stuff?

Why not filter the inbox so gridmails received from yourself are stored elsewhere?

A DataVault? Hell yeah.

The usernames node could function as a firewall, preventing access to it. If you can't hack my node, you can't hack my data....but if you do, you gain access to my data through another albeit more difficult skill+stat check.

What could be stored there?
Nothing...yet. But imagine eventually photos taken with (An advanced) FunCam could be "uploaded" to the grid and such. Its a silly thing but its valuable. If people have a place to store bogus data...other people might wanna steal it.

:stoned:

Oh, and I have responded to a topic I started 3 times in a row. I'm a post whore. Eat your heart out Iga.

This could be pretty cool, but don't limit it to photo's, memo's and other important data could be stored in them.
Yub, yub. Regarding ikoncode…if a command to center images or even an auto-center would be aesthetically pleasing.

I'm gonna reach 500...one day.

   package MyFormatter;
   use base 'CGI::Kwiki::Formatter';

   sub center {
       my ($self, $text) = @_;
       $text =~ s#

(.*?)
#<center>$1</center>#g;
       return $text;
   }

   1;

TA DA!

I'm just keep posting here until someone concurs…the above -SHOULD- be the solution to the centering issue in the grid btw...in case anyone wants to implement it.

More stuff I'm gonna blab aboot...

SIC AMps - They should be able to be modified...to do tracebacks on id #'s of SIC aliases ala WJF-Ops. And perhaps even function as a box that can deamp as well as amp. Hence, creating a dead zone on the spot.

I think alot of the electro-tech in the game should have subversive functions when modified by someone with the electro-tech skill. Ala...

Assess (item) - lists possible modifications

Modify (item) - attemps to modify the item. Foul up on something like a e-note and you might get a shock. Foul up on something with security measures like a Tac-comp...you might get fried so bad you take a vat nap.

Just some thoughts.

Love the ideas, make hacking of this sort easily avaliable to players and you create new jobs/plotlines.  Could definately go places.
Its not about being easily available to players. Its about it actually being possible but yeah. Less useless skills would be nice.
