I can't register for the grid

Whenever I try to register for the grid it give me an error. It says: Fatal Error: 500!  Am I doing something wrong or is the website still a little wonky from the crash mentioned at the homepage?
Ditto.
Could we be doing something wrong?
In this life there are infinite possibilities.
Any update or new news from Johnny or Chaos or somebody? I heard Johnny was gonna be the only one who could fix it, so Johnny? Anything new?
I think its leftover fuckedupedness from when the server went down.  There are other things that were affected as well, including the tools we use to create new attack messages for weapons, and the tools we use to check the NPC grid accounts.

We still can't use'em.  :(  Its definately shitty, but I haven't the foggiest idea how to fix any of it, and I doubt I'd have the permissions to do it even if I could.  I'm sure Johnny will jump on it when he can, if its even something he can do.  I get the impression that there still may be something wonky with the server..  but I'm not terribly sure about that either.

Well, guess this was another useless post by yours truly!  Sorry this shite's been taking so long.

I can't get mad or upset because it isnt fixed, because I understand that shit like this happens and there isnt too much you can do about it. So take your time and it will get done when it gets done.
"Check the grid for a job, You lazy slob"

Many of us can't do shite. Well, actually…lemme be more precise. I can't do shite. My hours are awkward and actually being on when a GM has some free time is rough. It'd be nice if we could find some sort of means to work around this problem, albeit temporary.

Yeah, the situation this guy in is kinda lame. Someone should help a brotha out.

Yeah!  There is stuff on the Grid but lotsa people can't access it!
I have to say a fucked up grid gives my character even less of a point being around.
Alright, this went from 'Hey, we should get it fixed' to 'You guys are getting paid right?  Fix this shit now!' in just one post.
No, I don't think it did… We're all patient but since we like this game we like to see it functioning, else we can't enjoy playing it is all.
Well, I am still on the 'Hey we should get this fixed' So how about it, why dont we fix it?
Okay, I understand your frustration.  I also cannot access the nlm grid.  I can't get a job or access cyberware. (I think thats where you make the appointment  for it.)   But this we shit in "Why don't *we* fix it." is a little bogus.   The person to fix it is johnny. Not me, I am a newbie, and not you unless you have access to the code.   And as I understand it his plate is already pretty freaking full.  So if we all cut him a little slack and only nudge him occasionally, he might get to it sooner than later.   As for me, while I can't get a job via the grid, I am working up my resume, maximizing my skill set and networking off the grid.  I even check the scansheets for job openings.  True they aren't the best, but then neither am I.  Maybe one of these nights I might even rp a initial job interview if I can get GM support via xhelp.

In otherwords,

If the mixer can't get to the net,

The net WILL come to the mixer.

It never hurts to do things the old fashion way either.
Yea, whatever happened to applying in person?
To me the problem isn't applying for the job, it is knowing what jobs are out there.  Normally, if you are applying for a job you really want, you tailor your resume to fit the job qualifications.  By spending more space on things they want and none on the things they don't want, you increase your chances of getting hired.
But with the grid down, you can't go to the job websites for the companys.  And I honestly don't want to do a shotgun approach and give generic resumes out to anybody who asks for one.  Iga would reach thru my screen and strangle me.
A temporary fix would be to create a babble script for the HR people that will list the jobs available and THEN ask for a resume.  At least you could have a chance of getting the skills on the resume that might get you the job.
Or just do what Nemisis suggests.  Find somebody with access to the grid and rollplay it.

…why would he do something like that?
I'd consider it pretty in character, personally... "I'm new here, looking for work, here's my details, cheers."

My advice is to get a place above RED before starting that approach, clean yrself up a bit (shower, people. Shower), and make sure you're not wearing the latest in MIX fashions... corpies don't share the same love of trenchcoats as RED dwellers... ;)

I mean it does mean that theoretically you'll end up with NPCs standing there with handfuls of resumes, but… yeah. I'd call that IC and not strangle-worthy, personally.

Quote: from Chienne on 3:31 pm on Mar. 19, 2006[br] …why would he do something like that?

Cause he's fuckin' Iga, he will cut down yo ass fo' breathin' wrong.

Iga is as tender as new born babe. I can honestly say I've probably caused more grief then he has caused me. :beaten: Roll with the punches. The best way to dodge bullets is to spin.

Jack Bauer doesn't dodge bullets, bullets dodge Jack Bauer.
Okay Chienne, to answer your basic question "Why would he do that if it was in character?"  For the same reasons most employers Shitcan most unsolicited resumes in the first place.
1) there is a mind-numbing amount of them.  If Iga has to read all of the stuff that pops up for job applications, he will probably sprain a finger punching the deleate key.
2) unless the resume is tailored to the job, they are mostly shite anyway.  And while Iga might have the patience of a saint it is not fucking infinite.  If you look at another thread 'Getting that Corporate Job' under themes you can see he is about to snap.

Not that I would blame him.  I have been a GM for TT RPG and I have wanted to give my nearest and dearest friends dope slaps upside the head for some of the boneheaded shit they try and pull.

IC is fine. But let's not make life tougher than it needs to be for the people behind the scenes.

I agree with Mensaboy, handing out random resumes may look kind of dopey in this futuristic world, but given the OOC reasons for not being able to register for the grid, I think the admins would understand being flooded with resumes… as long as you dont have access to the grid.
Hmm..  there are other GMs besides Iga, you know.  ;P

What's wrong with submitting paper resumes?  Nothing as far as I can see.  We have several players that have obtained high-paying jobs in that way both recently and in the past.

You might think it is not entirely IC, and perhaps it isn't, but we GMs understand that the grid is not working for alot of our current players (hopefully it will be up again SOMETIME), so we will allow a bit of leeway here.  We're not evil, people.  Just mean.

Yep, kinda like what I said, but I think in a technologically dependent world paper would be old news… out dated, technology is where the future lies.
Salvatore, I think you are missing the point.  Chaos just gave us permission to use said "outdated" technology, at least until the Grid is back up.  Just try and make it professional looking so it isn't grinding sand into their eyeballs and the Admins will cut us some slack.  Remember; Data will flow, information will be free - ILF.
I honestly think the reason Iga sticks in our minds as a GM is the rants he goes on when he finally gets pissed off.  Chaos is much more laid back.

.poke Chaos with a stick to see if he will get riled up.

:)

Is this fixed yet?  I can't seem to access it…
It is semi fixed, if you are having issues accessing the grid or signing up a character for a grid account please send an email with detailed information about your problem to [email protected]

Thanks.

Yeah…still fubar'd. *gropes quickterm*
I still got nothing.
Err the biggest change is that instead of some kind of Fatal Error message from the Wiki I see a Fatal Error message from NLM :)
I'm having this problem as well. And I see that these posts are a kinda old.

Just.. bumping it up I guess…

This has become the IRL Version of the IC Taxi Crisis!! w00t!

Question to the Admins that be,
Should we begin treating the Grid problems as IC problems even though they are OOC problems?

If we did treat it as IC, would NLM feel more pressure to Fix the problems?!

I'm up for it, who's with me?

I've addressed as an IC problem a couple of times. Bad chip shipment, blah zey blah. On all occasions with an admin present, I've been casually informed that its an OOC problem.
my char was ic with an agent and he suggested my char fill out an app on the TERRA node, but since the grid is down, i just played it off that the quickterm in this particular bar was busted and i'd do it later.

yes, its an ooc problem, but it pos def affects us ingame.  but since i think only Johnny knows the code to fix it (any java coders in the audience? bueller? bueller?), and he's been really really sick the last month or so, (hence not being active, rarely being on, and taking awhile to get back to me on just getting signed up for the bgbb) i think we should play it off as if the red dist quickterms are broken from vandalism, bad chips in the decks, or NLM is having an outtage.

it happens. i work for an ISP. outtages happen.

I think Jinxy cat is quite good at Java, actually…but ikonboard is peiced together all funky-like. Let alone the grid. You gotta grab an e-note and write a resume. Give it to the proper person at TERRA or maybe your agent friend.

Thats what I did to get my job.

yeah, that's what i did. i have an e-note, i typed the resume, had someone else go over it for me, now i just gotta wait for the agent friend to log back in :p
Wait… Chex Taxi "crisis" really is a purely IC thing? The taxis work??
ok, so we've established that the grid is still up, but the login system is down. can't we just get a bored admin or someone to field emails saying, "need a login. here's my charname, here's my grid username, email me a password. thanks"?

i mean, if i cant register for a char, i email [email protected] so why cant we have [email protected]? if some of you admins are too busy to field that, gimme access to answer and create users, i would be happy to handle it.

(yes, i'm trying to get back on staff… )

Thats not all thats down though soul.. GridNodes.. Searching the grid (other than forum posts) A whole lotta shit is fucked up with'm and appearently Johnny's the only one who can fix it.
yeah. well, its a start.

and johnny's been sick. or was last time i talked to him.

and prolly hasnt been on since then, which was about 2 weeks ago.

i was here from early on. i want to see it succeed. i want to help. if its messed up, then i'll go learn freakin java if i have to. i have a lot of downtime in this job, i could do it. that's why i'm logged into the dome for 9 hrs a day and active almost all of it.

Well I know one person that is a Java Developer by profession, was with the Dome since nearly the beginning of time, and is perfectly willing and able to provide assistance.  But that, of course, would consist of having to forgive past transgressions.
hey, my opinion, we grow, learn from mistakes, and there ya go. if you got skills, and want to put them to use, i think its only natural to ask and provide. i dunno what the transgressions were, i dont particularly care. i just want to see SD get even better.
Exactly, but some people like to hold grudges…
holding a grudge seems like a completely silly waste of emotion. i mean, when a person spends so much energy being mad at someone, does the other person even know it?

just firebomb their house, get over with it, shake hands, shoot him, and then forgive the clone.

its not that hard, people.

…love it when people say stuff about stuff they don't understand :D

*is not claiming to understand either, but is finding things amusing*

Just bumping with similar can't register/log in to the grid. Thanks.
I was able to login with my existing accounts up until yesterday night..

Now I'm getting the NLM error page, error 500 "Fatal System Fault"…

I guess I don't need to highlight that this sxxxxuckksssss.

Maybe this never got fixed.  I cannot register either.
The grid is back. Logins, registrations, node creating and editing.

The only issue I'm tracking is the ability to add graphics to your nodes. Existing graphics will work, but the thing that lists them when your editing is MIA and I have to rewrite that peice. :)

Search didin't work for me .. Here's the error…

Search works again, but it's pretty weak looking still.
Activity node is not longer displaying object numbers. *ahem*
I'm still unable to use the grid, username Devon.  It gives me the 403 forbidden.  Also, the register link on the forum causes a 500.
403 sounds like you might not have had sic coverage?
Hey Jman,
On the Activity page It showed I had made changes in the last hour but the page it said I changed was my IP addy. I've taken a screenshot of the grid window and it's on my website…

http://www.rcmaples.net/images/activity.png

Just thought I'd let you know.

I do not believe that what you are seeing is wrong, but i do think you assumption of what each thing means is. :P

-SM

I don't think my IRL IP address should be showing up in an IC window… or on any window that players (not admin) can see...
oh its RL? I didn't think it was a RL IP, I thought maybe Johnny had figured a way to assign IPs to the QTs

-SM

Yeah, thats my IRL IP… And the way I understand the Activity page its Username on the left, Page edited on the Right...

But, thats just an assumption mayhap it's incorrect.. but yeah, point stands, thats my irl ip. *shrugs*

There's a way to change the setting on the board. Some kind of master control admin node…I think its a setting in there. Probably fixed by now anyway.
Someone else actually had the same problem, your IP address is shown when you have a bad cookie.  Make sure your cookies are set to allow for grid.sindome.org and you might want to delete your cookies before you try and log on again.  otherwise I believe that no IP addresses are currently showing…

-SM

Thanks for that, I was having the same problem, and it kinda scared me. I am not that good with computers so when i saw my IP I thought someone could hack me really easily. Can someone hack onto your computer using just your IP?
Also, on the welcome page it says the node was last edited by Jinx, and then some sort of gamma beta security thing.
