There is currently a vote on whether Ze/Zir should be replaced with They/Them. Changing to they/them would cause far more problems than it would solve. Verbs are conjugated differently depending on whether pronouns are grammatically singular (he/she/ze) or plural (they). Making they/them the neutral set would result in @worns & teases having incorrect grammar (ex: '%S looks cozy.' would turn into 'They looks cozy.').
Ey/Em is a grammatically singular set of pronouns and nearly the same as they/them, so it would likely be easier for people to remember and it wouldn't cause the grammar issues of they/them.
