The FBI called today....

So we got a call from the FBI today. Special Agent Ramier Tabatabian called my home number at 6:30 this morning to inform us of a complaint brought against us.

I should probablly preface this by saying that this isn't the first time we've recieved a complaint about Sindome, but it is the first time one's been brought against us by an offical agency of this nature.

The complaint was that people were accessing our site, and being overwraught by the disturbing imagery portrayed in out world; that acts of a sexual nature are abundant; that descriptions of gory violent acts were regularlly carried out in graphic detail, but no warnings of explicit adult material are posted, nor any aptempt made to secure the site from minors, and that this was a clear offence of state and federal regulations.

We discussed at length what would be required to bring our site in line with said regulations… how we do have warnings saying that the game is of an adult nature, and that no one under the age of 18 is allowed to play, but here we ran into a bit of a snag.

You see, federal law requires you to obtain proof of age in a form which can be documented and kept on file. Normally for sites this isn't a problem: They require you to sign up with a credit card, which can be tied back to a person.

Of course, this will never work for Sindome. The fact that we don't charge for our service simply means that we have to either find another way to record proof of age, OR remove the offensive material.

Obviously we can't exactly start asking for people's credit cards, so after a fair bit of debate and a few hours of furious coding by Johnny and I, we've arrived at a solution which will allow us to continue to operate while still maintaining 'legal' status.

From hence-forth on, any pose, emote, shout, say, description, action, post, or any other output will automatically be run through our new AutoCensor. The AutoCensor is specifically designed to remove any and all material which might be deemed offensive, sexual, obscene, or not appropiate for minors. To let you know that a piece of content has been censored by the AutoCensor, it will be replaced by the rather distinctive <CENSORED> tag. This includes, but is not limited to depections of any act of sex, violence, cuss words, insults, belittling, rudeness, thievery, acts unbecoming of a lady (for female characters), <CENSORED>, or anything else which might be deemed offensive.

We of course appreaciate your cooperation and understanding as we move forward with this awakard change, but the alternitive was unacceptable to us, so we chose to make this compromise.

Again, we thank you all for your continued support. Happy gaming, and <CENSORED> the <CENSORED>.

-Kevlar

Does this include the game itself or just the site?
Yeah, I was actually believing it until the From hence-forth on,  and then I remember what day it was.  Good one, even beter than last years.
You had me going Kev… Don't do that..
Not bad not bad… :)

Last year's was better, yeah.  I believed it until I hit the end of the post.

*runs through the room screaming and crying and <censored> while <censored> <censored> <censored>*
I totally don't know why they didn't go with my solution.

Move the server to Canada.

*snicker*

almost.. almost… but last years had me big time.
It would have gotten me.  While I was reading it I was pretty drunk and I was like.. oh <censored>, that <censored> sucks.  I was all gunna login and start cursing and <censored> But.. then the rest of the posts gave it away!
What was last year's?

By the way, for the record, the second that I read that the FBI called Kev because of a complaint to SD… I immediately thought what day was this posted.

If the FBI would call anyone, I'd assume Jman... thats assuming their numbers are somewhere posted. Afterall... Jman -is- the archwiz (no offense Kev), I just think they'd go straight to the top. (If at all.)

Anyways... what was last year's prank?

You assume WAY too much. (But let's face it: That's nothing new for you.)

Last year we were being bought by EA Games.

(Edited by Kevlar at 10:08 am on April 4, 2004)

EA Games?

Uh. if memory serves, last year was the whole 'we're wiping the MOO, getting rid of all GM's, and new chars must submit 10-page histories…'

The EA games one would have been great for next year if you hadn't just said it.
Was my bad: EA Games was 2 years ago. It's still in the announcements.

Last year was the User Purge.

-Kevlar

yeah, that was a pretty good one.  Maybe I should get on once in a while.
Wait, I thought the user purge was still in the works….shit...
You all joke about the <censored> stuff, but I just got denyed to serve google ads on the boards due to 'offensive language'.

Fuck them.

Google, Schmoogle, pile of Foogle.

I spent the past 3 days working on a new bit of software to remove the dirty words when it senses the viewer is comming from a google link, or is in fact google itself… a process known in the industry as 'enchaining'.

The new piece of software, called the 'Automatic Web Enchain Yielder with Early Analysis Hunter', or 'AWE YEAH' for short, should solve this problem once and for all in a manner which is acceptable to all parties involved.

When it detects someone of a sensitive nature, it simply strips out the naughty words as they leave the box. The one downside is of course that the google spider indexes a page with (potentially) words missing, but it's a small price to pay.

So as soon as we've got this tested, we'll be moving Sindome to a Ad based revenue model.

As you know, Google ads are all text based, so this goes perfectly with out text based model, allowing us to provide the ads in the game itself (clearly marked as OOC ads, of course)! All that we ask is when you see an ad while playing the game, simply go OOC and view the ad by opening the link in the browser. They're usually little flash or java movies, so it'll take a bit to load, but they're pretty enjoyable. They also like to install a bit of spyware at the same time, but you're free to use any of the popular spyware removers to get rid of it.

We of course appreaciate your cooperation in this... What? It's not April Fools any more? They're not going to fall for the same trick twice?

Wanna bet?

You are forgeting that I am one of the people in group 10.
